Stern light

I have a friend looking for a certain type of stern light. Pretty much the whole pole lights up. Needs to be around 36" +

Also I need to know if one of these are legal?

There are also technical requirements for intensity, color range, and other factors that a light of that confuguration would not comply with.

"ANNEX I?Continued
(d) A power-driven vessel of less than 12 meters in length may carry the
uppermost light at a height of less than 2.5 meters above the gunwale.
When, however, a masthead light is carried in addition to sidelights and
a sternlight or the all-round light prescribed in rule 23(c)(i) is carried in
addition to sidelights, then such masthead light or allround light shall be
carried at least 1 meter higher than the sidelights.

The transom light, when used by itself or with red/green bow lights is NOT legal on either inland or international waters.

A transom or stern light, showing an arc of 135 degrees must be used in conjunction with a masthead light, showing forward in an arc of 225 degrees. The two lights together make up the required 360 degree all-around white light. The masthead light has to be a minimum of 1 meter above the red/green liughts, as above.

This isn't to be confused with a 360 degree all-around anchor light, which must be from a single lamp, or 2 lamps situated so close to each other to be viewed as a single lamp, from a distance of 1 mile.

In any case, the white light(s) must be visible for 2 miles and the red/green bow or side lights must be visible for 1 mile.

I BUILT A HYDROLANE THAT RAN SUCTION CUP LIGHTS ON THE DECK AT THE BOW AND ON TOP OF THE CARB SCOOP. WOULD THESE BE LEGAL????????

Technically illegal, but I don't think anyone will say anything. There may be some overzealous watercop that may take issue with it, so to avoid being conspicuous, it might be best to just pull the bulb. The Coast Guard will most definitely stop you for it.

As long as the lights are visible for the required distance and the suction cup light on top of the carb isn't blocked by people in the boat, you'd be OK.

Keep in mind, that after about an hour, the batteries weaken and the lights go dim. Carry an extra set or two of batteries with you and change them if the lights start to fade.

Also realize that the batteries you put in them last year (or even last month) probably aren't going to help you get from Roadrunner to the camp when the sun goes down. If you even THINK you might be out close to sunset, have a new set available before you go out.

There's no maximum height above.

If you're refering to the "Stick" light that rivergames first asked about, that light starts at the mount, and doesn't meet the technical requirements for navigation lights.
