Put the starter in the boat about 5 years ago and it wouldn’t start today when we were getting the boat ready for a trip in a couple weeks. Long story short, the starter is rusted inside and would not turn. We only use the boat 2 to 3 times a year and this should not have happened. Having said that, can someone recommend a starter that is less likely to rust-out.

Thanks

Should not have happened .... but happens all the time.
Solution is using the boat more often.

I am still using the same starter in my boat that came with it in 1985. (850 hours.) Still works, and no issues. It a mercruiser.

I’ve always stored it inside. The engine hatch keeps it clean and dry.

It's not stored inside, does not have an engine cover, but is under a canopy and boat cover. The two other boats in our gamily have the same starter but are stored inside. I'll have to look at the Arco inboard marine starter. Thanks

Just a question on how you wash up, do you spay the engine down? I am fortunate to keep the boats in side but have several friends that keep them under a canopy and no issues like this.
