Friend just rolled by and said over the weekend he got a ticket for one of his passengers standing up in his boat while underway.
Fine was $650.

This was up in the Delta.
Evidently she stood up and untied an inflatable boat they were towing as they approached the beach.

Anyone ever heard of that kinda dealio??

Our friend goit nailed for 500 because his wife was on the rear cover while the motor was running. He ended up going to boating scoool plus the fine.
BTW, I saw all sorts of people riding on the covers in Moabi with cops watching them, nothing was said.
Is there a law against it?

YES, you have to have your ass in a seat, I had a friend get nailed when his wife was sitting on a cooler, he got the fine and had to go to a safety course.

So LEO was basically letting everyone slide for sitting everywhere except for a seat?

So, when you hit offshore water, you have to sit it out rather than stand and absorb the shock with your legs???

When ya got kids in tow, you may find yourself jumping up and keeping the rope from tangling in the prop or other rope hang up issues.

Jumpin' about so approaching boats can see the flag ect

Wonder if their is more to the story?

Boat Cop,

What is the ruling on this? As yo know my Pontoon has limited seats and we actually place coolers on the boat that we use as seating. Also for the most part when Im driving Im standing and usually the people near me are also standing.

i have the same rule in all theboats but the pontoon. if teh boat is running (except for docking) everyone is sitting down. Just wondering about eh legalitites in the toon as we tend to congregrate around the driver helm and stand and talk as the thing only does a few MPH at full throttle anyways.

Sure sounds hokey to me.....I can see a ticket for "unsafe behaviour" but just standing or sitting on a cooler isn't necessarily unsafe. Moving from the front to a rear seat would be illegal?

Boat cop??

Huh? :bash:

Seriously, I don't see a prpblem with someone standing in the boat where there's little chance of them falling overboard. Pontoons with side railings, or other boats with high gunwales, no real issues.

But allowing someone to stand in an 18' jet boat at Ebay certified speed of 100+ is definitely unsafe and worthy of a talking to.

Also if there's not enough seats in the boat that people have to resort to ice chests for seating, there's a real good chance they don't have sufficient lifejackets for the people on board. :rules

According to the formula that you posted a while back we have the capacity for 18 people aboard the pontoon to be legal. I carry 19 jackets to be safe. We have all necessary safety items. and all reg and insurance are current. the reason I ask is a boat load full of drunks is always a target and would like to keep it legal and within any laws that are there. As moat know we alway have a DD driving and that attracts at times many more people to ride with us to avoid any troubles.

<----just wanna make sure the drunk wagon stays legal.
