Well my old break barrel that has survived two sons and put countless ground squirrels to rest along with other pests has fired it's last .177 pellet.

I am looking at one on Pyramid Air Guns, it is the Gamo Whisper Royal with a crosman nitro piston. I like the single shot units that don't need a CO2 and I like a 3x9 adjustable objective scope. I have one I can re-use, but what the hay:D
I want lotsa power, would even consider a .22 pellet, in a good rifle. I would spend no more than $400, okay maybe $450.
I have numerous .22 rimfires but like the quieter air guns and the lesser chance of a ricochet if I pop some little SOB on a rock.
Thoughts?

"If it doesn't kick, it's not power full enough."

The Germans build a few that are excellent too.
But they have a hell of a kick.

RWS model 52 in .22 caliber is deadly on tree squirrels. I've killed them out to 60 yards with one shot. I use the Beeman Crow Magnum pellets. That's what both of my pellet guns shoot best. I've also got a RWS model 34 in .177, both good shooters but the .22 packs a little more punch.

Can I "try" yours BEFORE I buy one ?

Yes you can, it's at the river, you can even come out to the ranch and get rid of my woodpeckers! :skull

I've wondered about the .22 air guns, but besides squirrels I fight with woodpeckers, too.
Is the .22 overkill for birds?

The Gammo 1,200 fps .177's are perfect for that task. Not very expensive at all.

This guys guns may be a little over your budget but it sounds like it would be worth it. Last year, was the second year I tried for one, checked the site every day for the call time. When he said it would be any day now I was checking in hourly it seemed like. I even got a call in within a hour after he posted he was taking orders and the call never went through. Sold out. I think he only makes and sells 1000 guns every 6 months. His next batch should be in Oct.

I've gotta RWS Diana Model 52 and whatever I point it at goes away. Still only a .177, but super fast.:)

Okay, it is ordered. :D

Gamo Hunter Extreme, in .177
Comes with a 3x9x50 scope, Bull barrel.
They claim it'll shoot the PBA ammo at 1650 FPS, plain ole' lead at 1250.
Read lots of reviews, all but one or two very positive. Some guys are claiming they have it sighted in for 50 yards or more.
It has a 3x9x50 scope, and lists on Gamo's site for $529
Most of the bigshot air rifle sites are either out of the rifle or want close to list for it.
Amazon had it for less than $350, if you hunt on there around and buy it from Amazon, not another outside supplier.
I just got my order confirmation.
There is going to be a marked decrease in ground squirrels tearing up my garden and grass when this thing gets here. If the scope gies me any grief I will step up.
This, I think, is gonna be fun.
I am already checking out trigger mods, tune-ups, etc.

A neighbor down the road has a Big Cat, obviously the price difference indicates some differences in the one I just ordered, but a great deal on a nice little piece. His two sons have about worn it out in two years, but Gawd only knows how many rounds they've put through it.
Before ordering a Gamo from anyone, make sure they have it in stock, as the darn things are tough to find. Apparently the squirrel population is driving lotsa folks crazy.

Amazon is no tax and free shipping on my order, too.

Yea, the one you ordered is a more powerful and probably more accurate rifle. I am curious to read how you like it and how it performs.

I am actually somewhat relieved to hear the squirrel plague is not just in my yard! I thought maybe it was something i was doing or not doing to help them go "nuts" back there.

Well it is here until I can send it back tomorrow.
POS.
The thing sounds like it is grinding rocks when you try to cock it.
It is just not a quality unit. I had read about problems with them, but had hoped I'd be lucky.
I was not. I won't go Gamo again.
After talking for an hour to a guy who does nothing but tune these things I am calling Airguns of Arizona tomorrow and ordering a RWS Model 48 Sidecocking Magnum in .22 No one, not one, person I can find has a bad thing to say about the RWS.
The tuner says he can work magic on them:D.
so, I am going to get it with a reasonable scope and once it is here i will kill a few critters then box it back up to get the superduper deluxe mega-gofast upgrade.
The '48 does not break at the barrel, so it is going to be inherently more accurate and repeatable.
Accuracy and killin' is what counts. This thing sends a .22 pellet out of the muzzle at around 800 feet per second, in stock form.
Gotta be a squirrel nightmare, for sure.
Stay tuned...
