Speed UTV El Diablo Opinions.

Hi,
I know this is a loaded question.
And
Not trying to getting too far down into the weeds with this thread.
But
Here are my questions:
Is getting out of a stock 2022 Can am Maverick XRS X3 TurboRR (200hp w/smart shocks)
And into a low mile 2024 El Diablo worth doing,
if I could be out of pocket about $8K-ish after it's all said and done?
Or
Is there just too many maintenance issues with the Speed and I should just enjoy what I already own and not open a can of worms?

Any input?

Heard it’s a special car that you need to “tinker” with a lot. Takes a special owner that wants to work on it and not just drive.

(My boat is like that and I'm 100% over "that life")

What attracts me to the Speed is the better suspension, electronics and 300hp (if I want it)

Stay with a product that has a solid support network.

You can upgrade the suspension on anything out there. Id rather have better suspension than power any day.

Right there with you. Our Can Am has 4,500 miles on it. Been pretty much flawless so far. I’m a big fan of fire up and go. I was tempted when we refreshed the 525’s in the boat. Same deal, reliability over a few more HP.
I do really like the Speed platform. I’d own one if i was convinced they figured out their power platform. The other choices are proving they’re just as good in a race environment.

Still runs great ! Although I’m on my 4th frt sway bar !

So does anyone buy the thought that Robbies "magic" rear suspension that doesn't use radius rods on the is head and shoulders better than what Polaris and CanAm has to offer?

I keep thinking that a Speed chassis with the CanAm motor/trans might really be the real deal. Tell me i am wrong...

Just need more cars set free out in the wild and I need to make sure they are reliable ….

Multi day rides really suck if you’re done on day 1 or 2 …

100%. Speed’s chassis & suspension design especially the rear is better then a radius rod suspension geometry wise.

But with that said, Speeds cv design currently creates maintenance that you don’t have with a radius rod car. I do think the aftermarket will make the Speed CV’s better.

100% agree the Speed with the Rotax engine and proper CVT clutching would be the ideal concept.

But I feel Speed has other issues outside of the actual car that IMO are a bigger concern.

I’d love nothing more then to say hands down the Speed is better and to go get it. But unfortunately allot has changed from the first 3 years of what was advertised and the vision Speed had. The car has so many good things going for it. It makes it really hard to walk away from the idea of having one. Yes the car has issues. But I do believe Speeds going to fix some, and the independent guys will fix some of the issues.

But imo there are bigger issues within the brand that are more concerning than the actual issues with the car. I believe Speed has a huge management and company foundation problem. And unless Speed wants to fix that, it’s not going to get better, and probably worse. I think the few legal issues they are having and will probably have more in the next 4-5 months, prove my point. I think for a few reasons, Speed stepped off the path and vision they had for the brand, and it’s not going to take them in a better place. A big one was not working with dealers to be service centers until cars are available to be sold in dealerships. I’m sure some would have no interest in that, but I know a few who said they would have been happy to be a service center for Speed customers.

Some other glaring issues is Speed not really understanding the whole process of being an automotive brand. Because if this, it’s stopped production many times. It’s caused cars to get impounded by US Customs, which has created Speed to hire legal counsel to help get Customs COO straightened out. It’s caused lawsuits with their shipping carrier.

If you’re not already invested in a deposit on a Speed, I’d suggest holding off and see what Speed looks like by next summer. They will either wake up and figure out what they are doing is not working and spend some money bring in a few people who do know how to do this to run & fix it. Or by 3rd quarter next year Speed might be looking to liquidate or just shut it down. This industry is struggling right now. Polaris & Can Am have been posting lower then expected sales, and even some lost earnings the past 5 quarters, Polaris had some lay offs 4-5 months ago, Arctic Cat is laying off a significant amount of staff. Interest rates are still high and we might be getting back in a trade war with China that will affect all the brands. That just might be to much for Speed to over come.

Yes it’s better than a radius arm car. The drivetrain is the weak link. In the words of Shark Tank, “for that reason I am out!” Lol

I see it as the next Delorian, but obviously I don't have a crystal ball.

I seriously hope it all works out, for the people that put deposits down Years ago now.

FWIW - A friend of mine has the El Diablo and loves it. Has a couple thousand miles on it already and has had zero issues. Biggest complaint is you have to take the bed off to service it and that's pretty much a two person job. He's a very experienced off roader and came out of a full blown 4 seat Alumacraft pre runner, he's constantly telling me how good it is and how happy he is with it. He thought he would be underwhelmed but is completely happy with his purchase. He lives in Carson City and there is a local dealer up there for support.

It’s come to light that TAPP clutches is suing Speed UTV for unpaid royalties, building cars with the TAPP clutch design after TAPP has canceled the licensing agreement due to Speed’s breach of contract. And for damaging TAPP’s reputation due to the Speed cars list of mechanical & reliability issues.
