I think there's a few people around here that would be more interested in a v-drive version....there are plenty of 23-26' boat builders that will make a outdrive version, but there are not many boat builders who are willing to make a large v-drive cruiser and they work really bitchen...so we'll have to restore some older boat like a 24XS.

I resemble that comment. This is exactly why I bought a 35 year old boat. I could not find what I was looking for from a modern manufacturer (Schiada) in a price range I could afford. I bought an old boat and have now dumped 3 times more $$$ into it than I paid for it. Had my crystal ball been more clear I would have waited for this economic bust and taken advantage of the deals to be had. If someone had told me I could buy a "nice" Schiada with a reliable blower motor for $20,000 back in 2006 I'd ask em' what they were smoking.

If Sanger really does have an unmolested 24XS mold I'd seriously consider buying one but it'd have to be a bare hull. Has anyone seen the 24XS mold? If so, how long ago was it?

I've got a scale near my place and I plan on weighing the boat/trailer and then leaving the boat in the water and weighing just the trailer. I am very curious to see what the boat weighs in ready to run form.

Hey Jeff,
Next time you're under your boat, take a measurement from stern to end of turn fin. I'd like to install a turn fin on my Howard and need a place to start.
Thanx

Carl,

I've got the boat off the water - I'll take that measurement in a few and post it up along with some more pictures. It's going to require two people to get an accurate measurement.

Here are some pics from today.

And I dig not having the bow rail... makes life much easier and I prefer the look. It'll be nice when the exterior work is completed - the temporary bow rail deletes are nicer than having the rail but don't do much for the looks. The plan is to install some mufflers, fix the exhaust elbow, and go give her some heck!

Last year? Try almost 3 years ago ;)

Here's the brief rundown... I'm the boats 3rd owner. The previous owner, Gary Smith, is a retired LA County Fireman. He had purchased the boat from a friend of his that fell on hard times a LONG time ago. The boat spent most of its life on Bass Lake near Yosemite. Gary retired in Winter Haven (Florida) and had hauled the Spectra out there with him. The lake he moved to just wasn't big enough for a 24XS. Gary had purchased a ski boat and the Spectra just sat for a year unsold. I had seen it online for about a year and finally made Gary an offer. He accepted and I drove out to Florida and back solo.

The boat sat in storage for a year in Lake Forest while I was in Europe. Last year I did a few repairs and launched her for the first time right around 4th of July weekend. The motor had some "new" oil and a lack of zinc caused two cam lobes to go completely flat and it munched up a few others. I found some rot in the floor near the marine toilet, the dissolving glass tanks were wreaking havoc with the jetting, and the rest is history.

You gotta wonder about that. Considering the economy, if they had serious inquiries to lay up a 24, why would they pass on the opportunity to turn a buck? Could the 24 not be covered under their liability insurance or something like that? It doesn't make a lot of sense, but WTF do I know.

It seems like that bottom with a ever so slightly updated deck could be a sharp and versatile setup. The addition of a fiberglass walkaround/center console/sportfisher type deck could open the boat up to a wider market to help mitigate the effects of the economy on the performance boat industry. I'm guessing it'd go alright with twin 200hpish whackers. Ideally, the best way to do it would be to buy one of the beaters with the std deck, blueprint the bottom, and use the existing deck as a basis to tool a new plug from. Too bad the ecomomy is in the toilet and it would be a long ROI for anyone who wanted to add the 24 to their line.

Chris

may be they're afraid that no one will want the Sanger Day cruiser that's being revived if'n they let the Spectra 24XS mold outta the dungeon?!?!?:hmm:deadhorse:

I pulled the 3.5" Bell style exhaust tips off today and enlarged the holes to accept the new 4" tips. I mixed up a small batch of resin and did my best to seal off the exposed wood and glass. In-line stainless mufflers are being added to keep the local lake patrol happy. This was a good excuse to ditch the 4" to 3.5" reducers I installed in a hurry to get the boat on the water earlier this season. I've got a nice set of cast stainless steel 3.5" Bell style exhaust tips that I'm thinking about converting into a pair of fancy cup holders.

Installed the 12/15 RB prop the other day. Hopefully if all goes well I'll have the boat on the water Thursday.

How did it run Jeff?

I'm hoping to be out on the water tomorrow. I wanted to spend an hour on the water Saturday but ended up doing some fire hazard abatement in the morning and spent the rest of the day at the gun range. Yesterday I worked on the boat for a few but never made it out. Tomorrow I'll take some pictures of the updated exhaust and hopefully get a few shots of the boat out on the water. If there's time I'll have the lake patrol test the sound levels... hopefully the new mufflers get the levels down to where they need to be. If need be the new 4" exhaust tips will allow me to run inserts, something the old 3.5" bell style tips did not.

My recently deceased best friend's grandfather has a 24' Spectra with V-drive down in Havasu. I'm in the process of seeing about getting it from him so that I can do a resto on it. I spoke to him not long ago and he said there were a few stress cracks in the fiberglass and that it would need new upholstry but the engine & drive were still good to go. I believe it's a 74' and this is the only picture I have so far...

I really disliked my red boat when I first got it... but it's growing on me. I think with more white I could live with it. I like the look of the red and white Sanger a whole lot more than my "fire boat" scheme.

Here's a few pics of the new exhaust system. I've got some T-bolt clamps ordered and will swap out the leftover hose clamps when they arrive. If all goes well with the db levels I'll pull the exhaust back out and polish it up and mark another item off the list. Once the mechanicals are all sorted out it'll be time to make it look better.

Made it out on the water again today and the weather was darn near perfect. Lake patrol says I'm within the db limits so the mufflers did the trick. Now it's time to build an engine hatch and a wrap around bench with an insulated base / cooler.

The reverse of that is though, there's no doubt in my mind that Howard builds all their boats better then the original mfg's of the hulls.. LOL

RD
I totally agree with you on Howard's quality. I was looking for a 20' Spectra back in the mid 80s and came across a 20' Howard. The quality of that hull was well above the Spectra on finish and gel work. I sold the Howard and have had a 24XS since 93. The quality of the structural build and gell is not up to Howard standards. I love the Spectra 24XS and will probably keep it until I'n on the wrong side of the grass.

Depending on the year, there were great differences in how they were laid up and rigged. What year did you look at? How many Spectra's have you owned?

The Howard 21' V-drive was a 1980. Beautiful solid boat. Had a 950HP blower BBC with nitrous in it with 22% gears in the v-drive. No tranny, just a forward neutral and reverse old top loader Casale. I had looked at a few Spectras before I purchased the Howard without an engine. Took a 20' IO for a spin but didn't like all the flex in the hull. I purchased the 1978 Spectra 24XS in 1992 and still have it. The boat is solid as a rock but have to say the construction quality is just not up to what the 1980 Howard was. The gel work on the Howard was spot on in every way. The Spectra has a 460cu.in BBC (30 over 454) roller motor. Around 550HP. I flipped the Champion V-drive to 4% OD and it will run just at 60mph. Very heavy boat but great in big water. All these Spectra and Howard daycruiser V-drives are great boats IMHO.

Anybody want to buy a mostly de-rigged 1974 24XS on a Fotografix trailer? I'm selling mine to help fund parts for the "new" 24 I'm building. ;)

Curious as to what you are asking for it. When you say de-rigged, I'm guessing it is a v-drive. How much of the drive train is left? I have a friend looking for a 24XS v-drive.

Aloha, Thanks for the reply. I think it would be way more work than I feel like doing or have time for. Thanks and good luck.
