If the fiberglass ladder has deteriorated to the point you are getting fibers off the cloth, throw is away, it is junk. We have nothing but those at work, and once it is no longer shiney it is considered structurally compromised and is replaced.

I feel you in the fiberglass deal, old airplanes are full of fiberglass blankets used as insulation. Pull an interior panel for any work and you get that shit everywhere. I'd itch for days after any sort of work that required and interior removal.

Dave,
there are several significant OSHA violationsor just plain "OMG NO" wrong about this.
Obviously, alcohol & ladders.....
2nd, if the fiberglass is "sharding", slivers, its decomposing. Losing its strenth.
Throw it away. Injury possibility aint worth it.
3rd. ! aluminum ladders....... are you f'n kidding me? They should be banned internationally.
Is your home 1 of the 90% in Havi with overhead power lines coming down to the house?........
As a kid, early 20's, I was a roofer. Ranch house. like yours. 4 of us on the job. Boss tells my good friend, grab a ladder off the truck, set it up around back.....
Truck has 2 extension ladders....
Wood, heavy. Aluminum, light.
.... which would you grab?
Walking down the side of the house..... bumps the power line.... screams.....
Dead befor he hit the ground.
Married. 2 yr old boy & wife was 7 months with their daughter.
Fuck aluminum ladders.
Electricity dont care if you're an electrician or not.
Drunk home owner moving a ladder, not paying attention, just as dead.....
This happened 40+ years ago.

That's awful.

The very first time i cleaned my pool filter (fiberglass) I lifted the top off with a bear hug and no shirt on.

Sadly, I feel your pain. 😔
Too funny. I’m no stranger to pain. At least I had a shirt on, but short sleeves. 😳. Yup, you only do that once.

Yup, ten year battery. Every 10 years you replace the whole unit, most people don't know you should replace all smoke alarms every 10 years

Yep replace every ten years. We replace batteries every time there is a time change (fucking cali) to prevent the dreaded CHIRP in the middle of the night.

I bought the 10 year ones but they are almost too sensitive. I pulled the one out of my bedroom because the steam from the shower always set it off

FWIW the ten year units don't always last 10 years. I've replaced several after 3-4 years.

I've heard that, I test them twice a year. So far so good

I bought one at my house in Texas. Did not bother fitting it into the POD for this reason.

After I moved, I got one of those multi position aluminum things for $150 I think. Used it a bunch already.

aluminum ladders suck and i have never been on one that felt stable. if its giving you fibers, get rid of it now. and to get rid of the itch, wipe your self down with white vinegar and get in a cold shower.

If you buy Werner ladders and store them indoors they should last 15-20+ years. Outdoor storage in the elements will wipe them out.

You can just see one that’s toast or that’s gonna put glass in your hands.

Fuck aluminum ladders (as I work with electricity).

I realize the story was meant for some humor 😎.

When I worked for TPD trailers we would router the edges of the FRP. Was bad when it was cold, but was absolutely horrible in 110* heat.

Ice cold shower to close the pores then hot as you can stand to open them to get whats alreadyinbedded. Then back to cold to hopefully squeeze the rest out.

Yeah f that!!

At the Chevy dealer, had just one guy that would do body work on Corvettes. Everybody else hated doing body work on Corvettes.

His secret trick. . . . . When done working on a Vette, take an ice cold shower.

Not sure if he followed up with hot but the cold shower is supposed to do the trick. Closes up the pores and makes the strands stand up so they can be washed off.

Tried it after I did my garage insulation. It worked!!

FYI Mine "near disaster" was when one of these "telescoping death traps" went from 9 feet to about 7 feet , the ladder fell forward and me about 5/6 feet back landing me on top of the ladder and wood deck was bruised from my lower back almost to my heals
