and there's not a whole lot I can do about.

And then there's family....a whole other bucket of bullshit.

I grew up learning quite a bit from my grandfather and dad. Respect, respect other people shit and clean up after yourself were all on the top of the list for repetition among 3 thousand other things like "when you're stupid, it's for a long time".

My grandfather held true to his teachings with leading by example. Somehow, this has skipped my dad. I don't know how I got the bug but I'm anal about organization and cleanliness. When I cook I wash my hands like a surgeon. When I build something, I take twice as long cleaning and putting everything away for the next time.

This past saturday my dad came down about 2:00 pm and asked if he could make a bat for my half brother (he's 7). They had the lumber but he needed a quick run through on the lathe. I showed him some things and requested he put everything back the way it was. Showed him the trash can, vacuum and broom. Showed him the tool pouch for the lathe tools and how to adjust everything. I shouldn't have to....but I know my dad...he's worthless.

I had been at work since 3:30 am....I wasn't sticking around for the completion of the bat so I went and checked on the shop this morning.

All I have to say right now.....

Are you fucking kidding me? Not only is it dirty...it's fucking broken. Parts are missing and there's hammer marks on the tailstock (check out the removed cover on the switch panel). The stainless table in the bottom pic was spotless....nothing on top when I left.

I thought the unwritten rule was kids are supposed to jack up their parents stuff so they have something to bitch about.

i know what you are talking about. i try not to borrow stuff from friends and/or neighbors ... but when i have to, i make damn sure it gets back in their hands in better condition than when i got it.

if for some reason it breaks, then a new one will be bought ...

I'm counting the days until my kids begin buying tools of their own. That way I can borrow, lend out, and lose their's for a change. :p

I wouldn't let anyone use my power tools.....expecially something as dangerous as a lathe.

You know if he gets his shirt caught in the lathe and looses a hand or his head someone is going to be sueing you.

Aside from the fact he trashed your equipment......:thumbsdown

I was taught by my dad and in shop class you always leave things nicer then you found them.

No good deed goes unpunished.

I'm done lending out tools. I can't tell you how many times I'm asking where in the fook is my ??????. Oh yeah, I let ??? borrow it and he said he would bring it right back. :grumble:

Now I rather just take my tools over and help knock out the job and take my tools home with me.

Did your Dad have any training to operate a lathe before ? If not ,you're lucky he didn't hurt himself . I'd never let anyone operate my lathe unless I know the person is a machinist ,period. You should show him this thread anyway .:mad2:

Seriously, if he snapped the tool rest it sounds like he probably sucked a tool through the machine, So F'n dangerous..... I would never let him use the equipment ever again, for both reasons, his own safety, and the complete mess he left.

I felt my blood pressure rise just reading it and looking at the pictures, I don't know how some people can be so oblivious and still make it through life....

I'm with you 100%.
It's a lesson that, unfortunately, many people have never learned.

Well to say I didn't see this coming would make me a complete knob. I know my dad, I've seen his vehicles....I know how he takes care of stuff. My grandfather used to bitch to me about how my dad takes care of stuff. We saw eye to eye.

On the other hand, being his son, I would expect an elevated level of courtesy and respect. He might not take care of his own stuff because it's his, but to monkey hump his sons belongings was and still is unfathomable.

To break the tool rest....yeah, he got something stuck between the wood and the rest. I don't care what he says, there is no changing my mind here. They started with a 4x4 and I rounded it down for them. Then showed him for a solid 20 minutes what is what, what does what and how to setup the rest to minimize injury and damage to the wood (mind you, I had never turned a thing in my life...not even woodshop until last week). I guess he figured he was being one-upped by his son...."I'll show him".

My mom and my dad have put a constant strain on me, talking shit about each other to me and putting themselves into financial situations that cost me buckets of money....once again....aren't the kids supposed to pull this shit on their parents?

I'm just glad I'm nothing like him. I hate to say it but when I realized how much smarter I was than him it didn't seem right. I felt like I was being disrespectful having that thought process....he's my dad...no matter how smart I think I am he should be coming in anytime to show me my lack of wisdom. Nope. He just keeps proving to me that I shouldn't look up to him anymore. He's damn lucky he didn't hurt himself or my half brother.

It could have been much worse though. I have all kinds of saws, grinders, presses in there. I'm just glad I can fix everything cause I know he's not going to do it and he's sure as shit not going to pay for it.
