Spotted this early today..... folks do run into trouble down here for sure. I'm not saying these young bucks were looking for trouble but if anybody does look for trouble here they won't have to look far.

So sad. I know you just went on a trip down Baja. Did you at all have any concern about running into trouble?
I'm still here, crossing back Saturday. I never go through that area between Tijuana and San Quintin, and take 5 up instead. Too much sketchy shit happens up there, with Cartel activity and crime. Not worth it.......

When I initially saw this news break, I immediately thought of @cofooter

Once I realized they were last seen further north, I realized the story didn't involve him. Thank goodness. This is sad news and is one of the reasons why I'll probably never have enough huevos to repeat the trip that cofooter is enjoying. It sucks too because there is such a beauty to the rawness and isolation of Baja.

RIP

Demonstrate how you mean for me... I'm getting ready to drive the 1 south Rosarito to San Quintin so curious how you use the 5..... or did you mean to say you avoid the Ensenada to Rosarito/ TJ route on the 1 and cross over onto the 5 and return to border that way?

I'll go out on a limb and just say that my friends that have lived in the area of MX just above where these 3 surfers went missing all tell me do NOT buy drugs from anyone I don't know. Ever.

This outcome is fucked up. It is looking like these guys were just minding their own business enjoying Baja and were targeted. Details are still sketchy but damn this is fucked up.

You’re not wrong. They may have thought they were befriending someone and wanted to party a little extra and mixed it up with the wrong people. You don’t show up and go hanging out in South LA and make friends. Same with this area of Mexico.

I hear that scenario would be quite rare.

Good comparison.... head on swivel partying at night here. Shoot I'm so happy I'm a day drinker... all my friends going out at night get in so much trouble. Over and Over and Over

Man . . . that really sucks.
Looking back now (at 54 years old) of all the times I went down there fishing, and or surfing, there were certain friends I would never travel with down there with.
Even back when I was young, I knew messing around north of the border was one thing . . . but south of it was a whole other deal.
Not to say these guys were or weren't messing around . . . but it always seemed like 'serious' trouble could find you a LOT faster down there, for whatever reason.

I am not making light of these guys disappearance. That complete sucks and am sorry for their families. My post was about the idea that Baja is less safe than other places. Not trying to make any sort of comic relief at these folks expense.

People dissappear in Baja all the time. It only makes news here if the people are from somewhere else. Like our standard comparison city, Chicago, or other big urban areas. It's not nationally "news worthy". It's very sad, especially for the two from Australia. This may have been a trip of a lifetime, halfway around the world. Instead it was their last trip. Horrible outcome.

It's been a LONG time since I have been down there. We used to camp for days at a time at K58, have driven to Ensenada multiple times and surfed some great spots. Some of the best memories growing up.

My HS Friends and their dad's used to drive from Valencia to Scorpion Bay every year to surf. Talk about an epic trip!

Super sad what happened here, but like some have said.......they may have befriended the wrong people. Whenever we went, we just kept to ourselves and especially never tried to buy drugs, not because we didn't want to party, just didn't ever trust the shit you get down there.

Really a sad deal. Couple of Aussies and an American going surfing end up dead in Baja. 50 years ago I was hang gliding down there and had to pay off the Federales so they wouldn't haul off two of my friends to jail for setting off firecrackers on the beach. Baja is a beautiful place with a lot of people who make a one way visit.

Sad story. Hot-headed latinos combined with booze and drugs, poverty, and no consequences for crime if you're connected = lots of violence. I have no desire to ever visit any country south of the US... Europe and Asia is much nicer and safer..

Likely stumbled on or inadvertently interfered with a smuggling operation in progress, maybe got lost. The druggies use those roads in the remote areas to load and unload boats. They tracked them down later and killed them in their tent because their boss told them to. Burned the car and bodies to send a message to their rivals and the federales. Just a wild guess. Guys were at the wrong place at the wrong time just trying to have fun. RIP

I have lots of friends all over central and south America. It really says something when they are also all making fun of how bad of a mess Mexico is.

Before I got married, I practically lived in TJ and Playas. My friend owns a house in Playas, he is african american and lives in Las Vegas, but blends in pretty well almost looks Haitian. He still goes every other weekend. What I learned is:

  • Never Drive there with your American car. Always walk across. US plates are a target. He keeps a clunker with Baja plates to get around at his house.
  • Blend in as much as possible. No shorts, no Flip Flops. You need to dress like the men there. They think showing your legs is feminine. Learn how to look.
  • Like Hubba said, keep your activities to Daytime. Nothing good happens at night. By 7pm, I was always back to homebase.
  • You have to know some Spanish. Even a little will get you a long way.
  • Don't ever flaunt your privilege. Act humble. Be appreciative.
Yes, shit is dangerous there. You have no rights, and the Marines will not come swoop your ass out if you get into shit. Its only YOU.

With that being said, I had no wife, no kids, no family. So if shit hit the fan, it only affected me.

There are some amazing restaurants and places in the TJ/Rosarito area, fine dining type places and we lived like kings. We got to know a ton of the people that ran the spots, and were always treated like royalty. One of them is http://mision19.com , so damn good. I became friends with the owner of a brewing company there also. Lots of great times,

Would I go now? No, too much to lose. Not fair to my family. But man, I had some great times down there.

Clearly these guys were in the wrong area or mixing with the wrong company. I grew up going to Baja, staying at my grandparents’ house south of Ensenada, or spending nights camping up and down the coast with friends surfing. As I became older, I would stay in hotels. I don’t care to sleep in the sand or dirt anymore. Most of the bad stuff happens at night. If you’re in a restaurant, hotel, or a house at night, nothing bad transpires.

Rule number one, travel during the day.

Rule number two, stay in hotels or rented houses, Air B&B or VRBO

Rule number three, no drugs

Rule number four, act like you are stateside, just because it’s Mexico, don’t go apeshit partying.

Last but not least, have fun, but keep your head on a swivel and don't be flashy.

If and when these boys are found, my condolence to the families, RIP. I'll be back in Cabo next month and all will be fine living by these rules.

Sad deal.

Sadly, I don’t think it’s just Mexico. It is horrible here if you were in the wrong places or get tied in with the wrong people. No matter where you are if you look for trouble, it will find you fast. Not saying that is the case, but after living in Brazil for three years, that would probably be my first guess.

When I lived in Brazil, I was racing motocross and making stacks of cash, and I literally lived with my head on a swivel and was always nervous, but I was very careful of who I hung out with. I partied hard like any guy in his early 20’s would living that lifestyle but I didn’t go out at night much because that is when everything happened. Never be flashy and never portray that you have money and I never did drugs. I believe if you are smart generally you will be OK anywhere you go but one single little wrong decision could cost your life here in the United States or south of the border. I never had one problem south of the border and I believe most of that is because I wasn’t a dumb shit.

Rest in peace, gentlemen, and may your family find comfort in anyway they can. Way too young to be gone.

I grew up Surfing BAJA when the worst thing was when the Federalis shook us down for spare
change / Have had friends vanish down in Baja
and the crime was they had surfboards on top of their cars-easy prey for the locals / When the Bomberos told me to stop coming down south
I LISTENED 😎

This just in.....

"Apparently the lifeless bodies of the three missing tourists were located at the bottom of a cliff located in the Bocana area, Santo Tomás.
Authorities are heading to the place to extract the bodies, more information in process..."

Interestingly this pic on sand is the beach below my Corona del Mar place.... tough story.

Regardless of what went down 3 dead higher profile US visitors down here is really gonna turn tourism on its ear I believe.... and vendors already had a tough winter season with poor weather... this will have an effect. TJ, Rosarito, Ensenada is closed. Locally we residents are fed up with our local corrupt cops as well. RIP
