What are you guys using?

My old school gear pump solvent tank needs a top off, was going to pick up a couple gallons of mineral spirits at lowes but they dont carry it. Got me thinking about switching to something else but dont want to spend a fortune and not sure that going to water based is a good idea. Thoughts?

Lowes shows it online, either searching Mineral Spirits or Paint Thinner. I bought some at Walmart at one point, but then found I could buy it cheaper online including shipping from Zoro. About every week they are sending me email with 20% off on items. I did take a moment and look and they are not currently showing the 1 gallon size of Sunnyside brand that I was buying. Fortunately I bought an extra case last time it was on sale. I also used to buy solvent from Parker Oil, but I suspect it got pretty expensive along with gas prices.

You don't say where you live. Tractor Supply shows this:

I have a solvent tank but have not used it in years because of no Stoddard solvent available locally.

It's been a few years since I bought Lacquer thinner and Mineral spirits in Havasu, I still have some, web says Home Depot still has both.
I’ve used the PSC 1000, I don’t think they carry it at the Havasu Tractor Supply but I ordered it took about a week. Works OK for my application.

Both Indio and Yucca Valley say it's in stock if anyone is passing by to pick it up.

I grabbed 10 gallons about 4 months ago in Havasu. But none in stock now.

So you were the one that cleaned them out. 🤣
Hey personal opinion the "Green" or water based solvents are more caustic than the petroleum based ones, they have lye in them, and will etch aluminum, and if you leave stuff overnight to soak, it will dissolve stuff,

personally I stick with more traditional stuff. Just my .02.

I don’t know if it’s water-based or not, it seems to work OK but I am just cleaning greasy old steel auto parts. Aluminum is voodoo magic to my redneck automobiles.🤣

Sorry, I wasn't clear, the Tractor supply stuff is petroleum based, And stuff can soak in it.

I was just commenting on water based, I went back and forth when I lost my connection to the old school safety kleen stuff.

I did not like the water based stuff

I went ahead and tried the Tractor Supply stuff because it was about half the price or less than real solvent anymore. I used to be able to get it for about $45-$50 at Jack’s auto parts and Havasu but now it’s $150, I think the last time I priced it.

If you create an account on zoro they will start blasting you with 20% off coupons in your email and in your regular mail.
Yeah, don't get them in regular mail at all, but all the time in email. They are an unknown division of WW Grainger from what I learned. I have not bought too much from them, but did get some great deals with the 20% and free shipping.

I've seen zoro come up a number of times in my searches. Was always leery about that site.

I looked into it carefully and read reviews prior to purchase. Deliveries have been prompt and accurate. I even called when I place my first order instead of doing it online.

I use mineral spirits in my parts cleaner. Pick up some from home depot every time we are in Laughlin for Rage at the River. Used to be able to order from Amazon but not anymore. Works good for pretty much anything.
