Such a photo is not a secure solution without a matching database of all photos received and those on the web and there are different comfort levels people are willing to endure. Not exactly sure what the qualification concern is, but I would think there could be a variety methods to verify someone is 2A friendly. One might be to maybe text a membership number from a recognized gun rights organization, a CCW license (or even the last few digits, like they do a SSN for credit cards), or even a photo if some one is so inclined. What about a photo of oa single firearm, serial number hidden, with the prescribed handwritten note? I’m sure there are many more and some will be better than others due to unintentional obstacles associated with each on the web site admin side. Some of the inmates may wish to jump in with other constructive ideas.

RD, I really appreciate your awkward position, openness and wellness to consider alternatives. You’ve always been quite fair and reasonable in our contacts.

I think your logic is kinda backwards on this.. the goal of hiding the forum in the first place was to keep anti 2A and lefties out.

A single picture texted to my phone with an rd sux and a member name is how I verified that they are who they say they are as far as a “member” goes.

That text is completely separated from the site as a whole..

After the pic and a basic search of their posts (history). The account is approved on the site.

For the paranoid types, when you think about it by doing the pic on one service and the “action” on the other there is a level of protection there.

So long as there is nothing illegal in the initial pic it is pretty much irrelevant. I don’t keep the pic or the texts.. I just delete it after I approve the acct.

The purpose of hiding the gun forum isn’t so that people can talk about doing illegal things. The purpose of hiding it is because this country is ever shifting further and further away from the constitution. :(.

In some areas with things like “red flag laws” some fucking whacko leftist fuck can make up any random story they want about you and the cops are gonna come and try and seize whatever they want.

That forum is simply a place where enthusiasts can freely talk about their fire arms with other enthusiast’s without having to worry about someone doing that to them.. on top
Of which there is some anonymity to it via the screen name (at least from the general public).

Is it a 100% full proof? Of course not.. I’m quite sure the cia ,or hell, one Motivated guy could penetrate that forum eventually, but from making posts and fitting the profile it would be harder than most realize..

However if we are getting to the point of a member saying they won’t text a pic out of fear the government might be watching.. (especially when they control what’s in the pic) then I have to question how much actual participation or useful information they would be willing to put onto an online forum..

There has been accounts that have been denied access, even though the pic has been sent etc..

Lol
I would NEVER text that info to anyone for any reason.
I don’t even show that to the cops.

It’s not the “government” that concerns me.

What would be the concern?
Every gun I’ve ever bought and owned was purchased new with a 4473.
The “government” has always known whatever I’ve bought or owned. Whatever ammo I buy is almost always on line with a credit card and shipped to my door. People call me paranoid but the fact is that I do not buy into the whole government boogie man rhetoric. Lol
My concerns lie in the 40,000 or so readers of this site (of which I maybe know 10?).
Just this morning there was no less than 3 new gummy threads, and now you have a new member, possibly a bot, associated with the sex toy manufacturer “Tracy’s dog”.
That’s just the surface.
I don’t mind posting a pic now and then from the range or just a day out plinking or whatever, but that’s about it.

You said yourself a while back that a group of the libs here were actively attacking your site, and you banned a bunch of them. There is no reason to believe that other groups are not actively monitoring this site. It’s absurd to think they are not, in such a target rich environment.

I think so many have missed the point. The photo you text to RD not posted to the sight. It is seen by him only. Could Dave be making a master list of who has what and then go on a crime spree and travel the country stealing weapons? Sure, but somehow I doubt it. He doesn't say text a pic of every weapon you own. You choose what you show him. Yes, you need to be cautious about who you show what to. But if you don't trust the person who's site you frequent.... You have no clue as to what the cyber community is capable of if they turn to the dark side. Besides, he is giving you some of his personal info in exchange for the text you send him. You will have his phone number. Not that he extends an invitation to call him up and shoot the breeze, but it is his number and he is trusting you to be responsible with it. Just like he will be responsible with the photo you send him.

Except that Dave has openly posted his cell number on this very sight more than once, openly invited (dared?) people to fuck with him. While we can applaud that as brave and standing up, it’s also extremely risky and fraught with peril.
Potentially 8 billion people know that number. lol
While that’s obviously not realistic, it is a fact.
Truth is, the security measures built into this hosting software might actually be more secure than his cell!😎😱
That text might get buried and lost on his phone, much more so than a typical members device.
I’m not saying he’d be intentionally irresponsible, it’s just a reality considering the traffic he handles.
As you know, once a device is compromised then every contact on that device is also compromised.
I cringe to my core when I see members brag about screwing with phishing callers and laughing about how they lead them on. Meanwhile said caller is busy installing his Trojan horse to destroy your life.
My employer turns a few hundreds of millions in revenue annually. You may notice that even when I post work pictures I’m careful not to show any badging. Not of the rig or any 3rd party apparel.
The reason is that there are people and bots reading this right now that would attempt to exploit those companies electronic weaknesses to primarily steal money.
They do succeed, a lot.
A few years ago they managed to install ransomware and basically shut down operations for weeks.
Needless to say, billion dollar clients dont hang around long in those situations.
We spend a lot annually on constant cyber security and updates and upgrades. We have weekly training and if you fail to compete this you are stripped of company site access and must go to corporate and complete in house training before you are reinstated.
They even send out fake phishing emails and links to test us.
This is for every employee from shop hands to field hands to admin.
A few months ago a breach occurred where a thief or thief bot mimicked an approved vendors email and had several ghost invoices approved and paid. They had spent weeks inserting emails and mimicking the valid email to make sure it was seamless. That ding was for almost $100K when they pulled the trigger and received payments in a ghost account.
It happens…all the time…every single day.
My point is that it’s a mistake to automatically think that when some people show hesitation it’s always the government boogie man. Frankly, they’re the last of my concerns.

As evidence, a few months ago a bot revived a thread started by my late wife. It was from 2011 I believe? She’s been gone since 2018.
It triggered on key words and provided a response with a link to some bull shit advice site.
Every day, we see new gummy threads ALL with links.
These seem harmless and maybe a nuisance, but they are not.
So no, I don’t trust Dave’s cell phone, and I don’t trust any website.
That doesn’t mean I don’t use them, lol, but I really try to not be the easy target.
There’s literally tens of thousands of peeps on here that have far more to lose and are much easier to hit than me. 😂

People wanted to discuss fire arms in a more private setting which is why I hid the section.

I was asking what would be your solution to keeping that section amongst the people that would like to discuss without worry of prying eyes that you are discussing here.

I’m not an oil company.. to the point though after some of the things I’ve seen on the news I almost wonder if that section isn’t more secure than the oil companies.. lol

If someone sends me a text I do go through and look at their posting history.

I don’t recall posting my cell number to taunt anyone into fucking with me. It is on the contact us page on here and I post it regularly because sometimes people need help with things.. it’s just easier for them to call and me to solve it. I can’t really say that I have a lot of enemies out there in the world.

An opportunist isn’t necessarily an enemy, and the company I work for (not actually an oil company) probably has less than 300 people on their internal system.
Your site has tens of thousands of people that all present an opportunity.
It’s good to have your gun forum hidden at least in some fashion, no argument there!
But me personally I don’t do those things on line, especially on open forums.
It’s just my choice.
I have no suggestion as far as any qualifying process beyond what you’re doing now, except maybe not to use your phone for the text.
I’d feel better if it was a moderators phone…lol.

I go back to the beginning of the accounts history and scroll about 10-12 pages of their posts to get a good feel for who they are if I don't know them personally etc.. I wouldn't make a moderator do that.

Part of the reason I said earlier though it would be kinda difficult to fake the funk to get in there.. I really do look into it a bit before they get in for the most part, unless I know them personally or something.

Nor would I. It was listed only as one method of vetting friendlies vs. non-friendlies Dave has a difficult job policing requests to the firearms section, I certainly do not envy him or anyone else charged with that task. Still, it’s his web site and I’ll abide by his rules.

Tell me a better system and I’ll listen.
