Okay folks, looks like it has been a while since boat batteries have been discussed so here we go.

Like tires, vehicle brands, and sports teams, everyone seems to have their Go To for their battery. I have used Interstate, Centennial, and Optima in my previous boats. The Interstates kind of suck IMO, but of course, that is what came in my new boat. I'm going to throw 2 new deep cycle batteries in the boat this season since the current batteries, dated 3/22 were already showing signs of failure last season. (low voltage alarm on my stereo when I crank it up)
I'm thinking about biting the bullet for a pair of Odessey group 27 batteries since I know they have a great reputation. Another option is the Optima. They seemed to perform well in my last boat.
Without going completely crazy on Lithium Ion or 1,000lbs of 6v batteries, what is the Go To these days for marine deep cycle batteries to handle a decent stereo?

Stereo Info: 2,000 watt Kicker system. Currently running 2 deep cycle group 27 Interstates and 1 cranking group 27 Interstate.

The only good Optima battery I ever had was one from when they first started making batteries and that battery lasted 10 years. I've had decent luck with Interstate batteries but think my next batteries will be Odyssey or X2 Power.

When I was looking at boat batteries, Shylbyntro recommended the Optima’s, which I purchased. They are expensive, but are worth it. Those and Oddyseys are the 2 that seem to be the highest rated.

The interstates that I removed from my boat were going bad after only 1 year, based on the date on them. Basically my seller put cheap $95 apiece Interstates, in order to sell boat.

The 2 Optima’s were approx $650. The dual port Noco trickle charger was $240. All in, changing out the batteries was $900.

I have the 3 bank Noco charger to keep them on the up.

I’ve always run Interstates , and usually after 3 years they fail . I recently started monitoring the state of charge with a battery tester after running for at least a day . The batteries were not being fully charged . My first area to look at was the alternator , and it came with a 60’s technology ACDelco maybe 90 amp . Upon further inspection, the charge wire was a gauge only suitable to transfer maybe 35-40 amps , hardly enough to charge batteries after the stereo cranking for a few hours . So I sourced a Direct replacement Denso 175 amp alternator and upgraded the charge cable to battery cable size , now when I check state of charge , they are at 100% charge . It’s been 1 year , I’ll see how they do longevity wise .

There’s a place in LHC that deals in Odyssey. All American Battery.

Anyway Oddysseys go in all our boats. And not just some regular one but the Group 31M monsters. We make them fit because nothing says boating like a couple dead batteries.

And NOCO chargers on all of them work fine.

I just replaced the batteries in the boat. They were interstate deep cycles. This june they would be 6 years old and this past year I've noticed some signs they were due. No crazy stereo. I replaced them with the same

I run odyssey batteries in everything. Hands down the best batteries I have used.

I’ve had great luck with blue top Optimas. Every one has lasted 10 years. I get them from Amazon delivered to my door.

I've too had good luck with Optimas, as far back as I can remember. I spent a bunch of money on an Interstate AGM in my Suburban, and wasn't happy with how long it lasted in relation to the cost. I went back to an Optima and no more issues with it.

I have an Optima Red Top in one of my Silverados and haven't had any problems.

My other Silverado has a Deka battery and it seems to be struggling, even with minimal use. It was installed by the previous owner in March of 23, and I doubt it's going to last much longer. I'll most likely yank that and pick up an Optima Red Top in a few weeks.

I ran 2 blue tops in my last boat and a red top in my sand car. Never had any issues, but I have had heard some stories of them not making past 18 months

Interstate SRM 27 Deep cycle batteries are 88 Amp hour batteries. So 2 of them provides ONLY 88 Amp hours because Lead Acid/AGM suffer a lot of damage or loss of longevity if you run them past 50% discharge.

So you only have 88 X 12 = 1056 Watt Hours of useable battery in your battery bank. I assume your 2000 watt stereo is 2000 watts maximum output. Lets say you are playing the stereo on "5" or only using half of its output at 1000 watts. You are starting to hurt your batteries after about 63 minutes of use. Then you probably abuse the batteries a little more with partial or under voltage charging for short periods off of the alternator.

I was going through a lot of batteries every other year or so until I figured this out......

Take a look at Lifeline Batteries . . . made in 🇺🇲
I've been EXTREMELY happy with them.

I've been offered a very sweet deal on a set of Millertech Lithiums (3) for my boat . . . I've been so happy with the Lifelines that I'm reluctant to switch over.
Mine are the small U1-T size and weigh 24 lbs each . . . . the Millertech in the exact same size weigh 10 lbs. That would be 42 lbs in weight savings, which is a lot in my little rig. But the Lifelines have been so damn good . . . . I'm getting a little over 5 years out them . . . I run 2 for my 24 volt trolling motor and I use them a LOT, and I take them way down past where they really should be . . . and they just keep going. The other one is my starting battery, and I just replace it a the same time, but it's usually in much better shape.

Worth a look anyways.

I go to Walmart and buy their brand, and put them in battery boxes no one can see what they are. Never had an issue, but I store my boat inside, with a perky kill switch.

The story I heard was that the partners that started Optima split and MFG went to MX. The other partner started Odyssey and was trying to keep that quality up.....
