Have you looked at your expenses to see if there is anything you can adjust to save money? Construction side work isnt going to work for you since you won't put a ladder on your Escalade.

I have 4 kids. Truck choice is extremely limited and the Escalade (suburban size) is still owed on and not worth much more than I owe. I have to use all 3 rows for my kids when I have them so I'm VERY hesitant to putting much in the back that would or could interfere with having places for them all to sit safely.
Crew cab pickup will hold 6 people (not real comfortable but it works) or get a service trailer and tow behind Escalade

Holidays are here and you may be able to land a gig at a local retail place as "Holiday help." Short-term but that would keep you local.

Side note. If you're earning "Extra pay," I hope that's not calculated as "Income" so that some of that money gets distributed to other folks .....if you catch my drift.

That isnt an issue. Its the ladders and larger items that I am more concerned about.

Easier to do when referred by a mutual friend or connection though. Not even too sure where to start that.

@Riverbound you want a Monday and Tuesday evening/everyother weekend tech out of the Burbank area? lol!
Get a Little Giant ladder...it'll fit in the SUV.

Here's something to think about. Nobody makes much money doing stuff that any idiot can do. Deliveries, assembling Ikea crap, it very likely won't be worth your time, unless you literally have nothing to do with half your day and would otherwise just sit there.

You need to do something that requires skill and that interests you, and then you will be able to make all the money you want at it. You will need to compromise and adapt when it comes to equipment/tools/whatever....and do some stuff the hard way until you can afford the stuff to do it the easy way. There's nothing wrong with that if your volume is low, which it will be in the beginning. You're an HVAC guy, so I'd do HVAC stuff if I was you.

Damn. I really do like your harsh but true comments.
Have to say. This made me think about what I’m doing. And maybe what I should be trying to do for the better of me. Thanks. 👍

I didn't mean to come off as harsh, but that's the reality. I've tried tons of stuff over the years to make some extra cash, and the majority of it was just a gigantic waste of time and effort. I'm a mechanic, so I decided to stick with fixing cars whatever else I could. Back in my early 20s, an extra $150-200/night after work was common, and weekends were typically good for $500-800. Made more on the side than I did at work....once I realized that I quit my real job and just did side work for a while. It worked because I was good at it and I enjoyed it and I was interested in it. Hard to make money doing something you don't really give a shit about.

Harsh probably wasn’t the right word.
More just straight up front and the way it is. As you said. Reality. 👍👍

Key thing was don't do a job any idiot can do. Bunch of idiots flock to the market and now you have a surplus of workers. Surplus means employers can lower prices (wages). Idiots will work for under value and be fine with it because were someone won't work for $18/hr. there is someone that has been dreaming of $18/hr. and plans on retiring on that wage. Driving doesn't take much brains or skill. Your phone will tell you everything to do. Pick a line of work people don't want to do but there is a demand. I'd guess if you can't make $100+/hr. on a side hustle then it isn't worth it.

Im sure your trying to keep it simple with no upfront cost. Work your neighborhood Facebook page or whatever they have. Dog watch, babysitting Simple installs like garbage disposal, ceiling fans. Even car washing in your neighborhood if they supply the water and hose.

I'll also add, if you're gonna be doing HVAC repairs/handyman type stuff, get on the NEXTDOOR app. You will not find a bigger bunch of useless helpless people anywhere.

Lots of good answers in here. Basically comes down to “just make it happen, don’t make excuses”. I’ve heard a lot of excuses. My buddy and I always chuckle when we see a few pisas with 15 ladders tools bellowing out the back of the truck and a gate strapped to the front. By hey. Guess what. They are getting it done. Then u got the white boys saying I don’t have this. Or I don’t have that. There is no “easy” side hustle. If u want it, there are going to be times you feel unprepared, not qualified, etc etc. Successful side hustles usually always come with sacrifices. Just my opinion. But I had to turn my side hustle into a day job so I know a few things about it. Welder-24 yrs of side hustling. Lol

I got a extra truck or van. I need a few HVAC systems done! I could get a lot more of them also but my HVAC guys can't get it done timely m

I have a hvac Guy that does the same as you. But it's like pulling teeth to get him to show up. Every excuse in the book. But he can't afford to buy a house in CA. F#*$ he could be living in Manhattan Beach with a little hustle mentality.

I am also finishing up a build for a HVAC guy. He won't get out of bed. No matter how much he owes Me. He could of swapped work and covered a lot of his build instead of having the Wife cover it.

If I wasn't working 12-15 hour days I would be taking night classes to learn it. Just beyond slammed with jobs.

Sell/trade whatever your daily driver is now and get a truck.....

My life long AC guy has worked out of a regular old pickup truck for decades, you don't need a fancy truck to do AC work....

Hell you could do it out of a station wagon.
Van would probably be even cheaper.

I've seen a couple of these older Prius's converted to trucks lately.
Hell a while back I used my Chevy Volt as my truck with the rear seats folded down.

Im assuming side hustle is to show no added income. Totally understand that.
Find a pool guy. Pick up a few for cash. Not a full blown route. Just a few so you can do it consistently after normal work or a Saturday morning.
Find a surfboard repair shop, anyone can sand.
The dog walking sounds lame, but not really. If you can group a few together and do it 1 hour a night it's probably not a bad gig.
Venmo type payment or cash. Find a upper end neighborhood. Throw so fliers out and stick one on the multi mailbox thing.
Car detailing. Easy to get started. Few clients a week.

Sell feet pics to guys like JBNSOCAL, he can add it to his regulars.

Known my Farmers agency owner for our personal stuff since high school who's about 5 years older than me , DINK, and the last few years he got sick of how messed up that industry had become with Ca and his clients calling complaining about rates etc. so he sold the business / just straight hung it up. Dude was the best agent ever btw . Anyway him and his wife have always been big dog lover peeps and I talked to him the other day. He said he's been golfing a ton and started walking neighborhood dogs mainly out of boredom and is easily pulling 5-700 a week lol.

@Flying_Lavey i have a solution. I need a part time estimator/PM. I need someone to bid the work and manage submittals/order equipment or find alts for long lead stuff when I can’t do it . I have the install side covered. I’m stretched thin and need a little help on the admin/PM side.

10-20 hours a week max. I’ll get you a laptop and whatever takeoff software you like best. Just need to get the bids Together for submission on time. My field super can cover the site walks and field verification stuff.

For everyone else in this thread, I have a small crew that does commercial HVAC Installs(WSHP, package units, split systems etc…) we can do water source piping and refrigeration systems, spiral and rectangular duct, grease duct and hoods. We are doing a resteraunt in downtown currently. Just completed an aerospace manufacturing facility in SEPT. Design/build with 9 package units and exposed ductwork throughout. Turned out really nice.

We are in our infancy. Just busy enough to keep guys working 40 hours, we could use a bit more work to avoid downtime. Any opportunities to get a few more jobs under contract would be great. Shoot me a PM and I’ll send you my email. We can cover Ventura/LA County. I’ll go to OC if we need too. Anyone backed up for commercial installs, I’ll do that too so you don’t need to hire more crews to get caught up.

@NicPaus - I’m assuming residental? Depending on what the scope is i might be able to free up a few guys to get your installs done. I’m trying to stay out of residential . If it’s quick in easy I may take it on. My guys will be at a standstill if The GC doesn’t release equipment submittals soon. I gotta keep them working, can’t afford to lose them right now.

I was supervising 6 guys today. Managed to break away to pick up a few pieces of quartz. Lots of waiting around while they load the truck. Waiting 4 hour windows for inspectors to show up. Watching guys dig holes before i jump in them. I got off a roof last night at 1015pm. Home at 1115. Bed time was 130 last 2 nights.

Just got to dinner now. Have paperwork to do later. But if I wasn't posting here definitely could be be doing something more productive. Like washing the truck while I wait. Or updating my business Facebook page. I finished this water heater at 7pm. Quick $1500 on top off my easy day. Dinner just showed up.

Get a small trailer, it will do everything and more than a pickup truck will. And they’re cheap.

Mobile auto or boat detailing. Just need a shop vac, hose, extension cord, some brushes and spray bottles. Can hook up to customer's water and electric. Did that for a few years while I was in college and waiting tables at the same time. I was on my own and finished undergrad school debt free.

So now that my divorce process is coming to a close (looks like it will all be complete late next week), I would like to explore adding a side job, or a side hustle as the kids say that I can do on my down time to put a little extra coin in my pocket. I'd really like it to be something that has little to now monetary initial cost since I really don't have much of any of that to front at the moment. Anybody have any ideas?

I think my Escalade is too old to do the Uber thing (2009) and it really doesn't make financial sense to use it for delivery services due to the shit fuel economy.
What is you trade or skill set? Take advantage of that, work for cash on the side. Back in the 90's (long before my divorces) I made enough money in cash on the side to pay off multiple vehicles and come up with a sizable down on a home that my first EX was able to capitalize on:)

The divorce is final, income has been documented. Everything you make after is yours. If your able to, go make YOUR MONEY!

I worked 15 hour days all this week here in Portland. Im exhausted… I fly out at 4 so I’m leaving to the airport at around 2. I can’t wait to be in bed laying next to my wife. I work tomorrow but I’m taking the weekend off. 60 hours plus travel is more than enough for me 😂 oh and Sunday is another travel day so not even a full weekend.

Bartending. Try to get on with a place that does events and work weddings and corporate gigs. Shit pay, but good tips and it's cash. I help out my girl that is an event planner. From time to time she can't find somebody or has callouts and I'll step in on Friday and Saturday nights. Normally not doing shit anyways..

Where are your sites? I might be able to help you out. I don't have a few of the typically company provided tools, but I can probably get and/or borrow them until I can buy them.

The trailer idea doesn't always work. It's a nice option but can be a burden at the same time. Not knowing his living conditions, storing a trailer may not be possible or just may cost more than what it brings in. Being he's in the LA area parking with a trailer is pretty much impossible.

I started a Handyman Business on steroids this year. My Forte is electrical but have been taking all sorts of jobs doing plumbing and drywall repairs. Its a side hustle on the weekend for now and is all word of mouth. Im building my FB page but havent shared it yet. I do it out of my truck bed but have a service van coming to put all my tools in and keep locked up. I may have to look into one of the referral services when I go fulltime. The next 2 years are going to be a great tax shelter even if I dont make much revenue.

if you had a tiny utility trailer, I'd say appliance repair.

last week we came home to a broken dryer.... okay it lasted 20yrs... maybe time for a new one. One big issue.... we're on propane. All the new dryers have to be converted and you have to do it yourself or hire someone to do it (I converted ours back in the day when I had more time & energy). I was ready to just buy a new one, but it would still have us down a few days without a machine. I hit up a few guys on offerup / marketplace for used machines, but they took too long to respond, in the meantime I pulled the 2 bolts off the top of the dryer, diagnosed that the belt had snapped and ordered a rebuild kit off amazon for $12 and it was there the next day. Installed in 10 minutes and we were back in action.

these offer-up / marketplace guys charge $200-250 for a used working machine delivered and they pick up your old one. So they are making a good 200-225 per machine a pop. pretty quick / easy cash money w/ minimal investment.... but definitely need a truck or tiny utility trailer.
