I have bad both. Bad Ass lifted Jeep with everything ... very cool ... sold it 3 years ago and got a RZR ... for me ...the RZR is so much more fun. Ok ... I'm talking off-road ... not cruising the freeways ... in my Jeep I always had to go slower cuz I'd be beating the crap out of myself and the Jeep ... in the RZR I can haul ass the same exact places in comfort and not really worry about breaking stuff. But these RZR's can go up stuff quickly instead of crawling up ... it all came down to this for me ... where I was off roading (Havasu) the RZR's IMHO are the only way to go. If ur a slow moving hard core rock crawling technical wheeler guy then maybe a Jeep is for you. Go on youtube and check out some RZR video's ... you'll be blown away with what they can do. All this time I had thought they were kinda like toys ... I was way wrong. These are bad ass and tons of aftermarket equipment available. Plus ur wife can drive and not get into too much trouble cuz they are so easy to drive. We all go out for 75 to 100 mile rides and our wives drive about 30% and they dig it. Off Roading has been evolving for years now ... SXS's are killing it.

We were in the same situation last year, decided on the Jeep.We figured we could off road ,use it to launch the watertoys and if need be could be a back up vehicle for the street. After a lot of looking we picked up this 07 JK for under 12k,only 60k miles.Been happy with our decision so far

Trans pan gasket. A front hub.
Some carb tinkering.
Springs are super flexy. You don’t want to go much more than 55ish..spooky. Is a crawler more or less.
Is the Dauntless V6/T400 combo.
The hitch is,
A. It’s in Colorado
B. The Jeep is a 71, the engine block is a 76 3800 series block. Not sure what if any Ca emissions laws apply to street register.
C. No AC, but I imagine could be retrofitted.

I think if I were serious about it I’d swap a modern LS based truck engine/ trans package to pass smog, and incorporate the stock GM AC components.

Any idea on ballpark price before I even venture down the path of research?

What suspension do you have on that flying blue bird?

I have an EVO coilover w/bump stops but haven’t really played with it very much...

Your flys very nice!

Thanks, she does fly well, takes up the whoops better and heck crawls well too!

I'm running the EVO DTD on the front and Evo lever on the rear. Of course all the long arm, gusseted frame, limit straps, bumps, etc, all 8 kings are 2.5". Front axle is a prorock 60 rear is a prorock 80 with RCV's with a kustom afterburner whistler tail pipe.

Consider the Roxor
$12k to $15k new.
Diesel powered.
Built in Michigan.
A better looking cage and the 7 slot grill and a $200 back seat is all it lacks.
Comes with the winch, lights and a sound system in the $15k version.
Berts sells them as fast as they arrive.

I was trying to decide if we were going to finally step up from the rhino to a new sxs. We made the decision to go with a built pre runner and don’t regret the decision one bit. Creature comforts like AC and heat are nice as well as being able to roll up the windows and not be as dirty as when riding in the sxs

I’ve gone round and round on this as well. I’ve owned several jeeps from cj’s to tj‘ s, and still have a 2000 tj that my kids drive now. I was able to race an x3 max in Baja a couple weeks ago, and all I can say is holy shit, those things work. My buddies bought it brand new, then put $15-$20k into it before the first mile was driven. So, it’s like a factory trophy truck that you buy at chaparral, and have all the aftermarket gear made locally, but you’re into it for $50k. You can get trophy truck like performance that cheap. Or do I do a custom build pre runner truck in an older 1500 Silverado or something? I’m torn on the can am, or the pre runner route with a license plate. The jeeps work well for what they are, that’s a given. I’m just bored with going slow! I never should have went to Baja!

I want to buy a off road vehicle. I'm torn been a Rzr or a used Jeep. I live in The Peoples Republic of California. I was thinking a Jeep would be better since I really couldn't move full time to Havasu yet. Yet meaning 14 years from now.
You could just say screw the Jeep and the golf cart and go this route;)

As others have said, there are advantages and disadvantages to both. I've stayed away from SxS for a variety of reasons. Hot in the summer, cold in the winter, you are getting dirty if you get in the dust, not street/trail legal in many places, etc, etc, etc. This past winter we went in the hills near lake Mojave with a group of SxS people. They were bundled up like eskimos. That did not look fun and we kept up with them just fine.

But I've also stayed away from Jeeps also for a variety of reasons. You might consider one of these instead:

Tahoe Z71...locker as standard equipment, V8, same wheelbase as a Jeep Rubicon, and only an inch or two wider depending on the wheel offset you use. All I did to mine was a minor lift using torsion keys up front and spring spacers in the rear along with new wheels and 33" tires. Does everything my Dad's Rubicon does and in fact he's had to put it in 4WD in certain areas and I didn't have to. You may get some desert pinstriping on narrow trails with bushes since the outside of the Tahoe body is more or less even with the tires, (Jeeps not so much), but if you bought it for offroading, that's to be expected. Seen plenty of Jeeps with pinstriping as well, so maybe a moot point.

The Tahoe is bigger on the inside than a Jeep so the GF and I can fold down the rear seats and sleep in the back if needed. That makes overnight trips really easy with no tents or having to find a hotel necessary. After a trip, jump on the freeway and do 80 on the way home while getting 14 MPG or so. Then when you get home, still be able to tow a moderately sized trailer if you have that need.

In my opinion, it's way more versatile and powerful than a Jeep and has been working out great for us. Just some thoughts for you...

Tahoe's can be built reliable and pretty tough. The weight is not ideal in the sand or mud.

G80 and front diff are made of glass and CV axles are weak also. The 4l60 is also crap in stock form.

Built trans and a solid axle swap go along way. Don't get too much flex going or the rear windows will pop right out.

I've heard that before, but I've been on some rough stuff and not one problem so far...I can only speak to my own experience.

Have you considered a plated Manx or Baja?? You can find them for 1/2 of what you will spend on a SXS???

Tend to agree with BigBore500r- Jeeps are nice but your going to beat the shit out of it trying to keep up with SXS's or Baja's/Manx. I have a friend who has a Jeep Rubicon- 4 door. Has all the bells and whistles and its nice but he hammers the thing trying to keep up with us. We also drive at a pretty fast pace and he struggles to keep up. He says it sounds like its going to fall apart inside as he is driving along trying to keep up.
