Went to our local mall yesterday, couldn’t believe all the vacated stores. I always found malls to be convenient for shopping, not having to run all over town looking for something. But walking through yesterday and Christmas decorations were none existing, kinda of sad compared to yesteryears.,😎

Our mall is very sad. They used to have the best Santa for pics, but the Covid stuff put him out of a job too. The rise of online shopping has killed places like this. I'm still old school. We buy very little online. In this area, there is very little industry. I like to think shopping around here helps keep others working, and able to spend their money to keep even more working.
One can hope...

I'm with you and I try so hard to buy locally, and it's sad to watch our local "Go To" mall becoming a shit hole of boarded up shops.
Now there's chatter of a Costco taking over the old Sears portion.
There's some things I refuse to buy online without seeing them in person, or like shoes, where I'm finding little size consistency any more.

When we went to Santa Cruz there was a place that had pool tables, a bar, and shirts for sale.. it was a large place with food, and other games etc..

There’s a couple thousand feet for rent next to the rdp office and I really wanted to make a smaller version of that right next door. Couple of bar sized pool tables with t shirts lining the walls for sale and other stuff..

I just don’t want to take the financial gamble on it not panning in havasu.. and then staffing is a nightmare anymore in our town.

We sell about 10:1 online vs brick and mortar.

Promenade Mall in Temecula is constantly packed. Daughter got a job at the mall working at Old Navy. Cool gig for a 17 year old and she is making $16/hour.

I try to stay away from the mall but kids still like hanging out there. Not sure how well the stores are doing, but they did just build a brand new Dicks Sporting Goods and a super cool arcade spot called Round 1. Have heard that malls in other areas are not doing as well though.

Went by the Oaks mall on the way home and I noticed the parking lot was packed. It happened to be black friday, but even over the weekend seemed to have a pretty full parking lot. We have the outlet malls here in town and I won't even go near there this time of year.

Separate from the market strategy, kids a Leo. Told me point blank, stay out of any mall. I’m old enough to listen to my kids.

As much as that would have brought more customers, I struggled to understand their rationale when they already had two existing warehouses a few miles away, both north and south of there. Plus the new Business warehouse in San Marcos.
Unless it was going to be something entirely different ??

Between trying to compete with Amazon and defend themselves from smash and grabbers I can't understand why anybody wouls want a retail store anymore.
Because some of us ole timers actually enjoy the experience of walking around a store, seeing something interesting and picking up and holding real objects. I can't buy clothes online, pictures just don't cut it. I certainly can't buy shoes, unless I try them on, as my size varies with ever brand.
I'm forced to buy things online as a last ditch option because real stores are stocking less thanks to the apparently popularity of online.
I derive absolutely no pleasure from online shopping, it's not an enjoyable experience at all, it simply serves a purpose.

You don't understand me finding enjoyment in shopping, I don't understand how you derive any pleasure from shopping online, with your purchases based on pictures and marginally informative information.

I’m not disagreeing with you at all, I just see it getting harder for retail stores to survive. Would you want to stock shelves with your money and see a group of people come in and run out without paying?

The mall in Valencia is 75% occupied at best. Macys has been hit twice by smash and grabs.

I don't think any business wants theft, no more than we wanted to have our project gang boxes broken into and tools stolen. We bid and performed on the jobs regardless while doing our best to mitigate theft. What was our option, shutter the contracting business altogether ?
I don't believe that's the main motivating factor for stores cutting back on inventory, but certainly it's a valid and concerning problem.
More and more caged areas going up that's for sure.

It's sad what's become of Macys, as it's become the new Pennys and Pennys is about three grades below Target.

Soft on crime policies are going to run this country into the ground. I feel for all my construction brothers that have tools and materials stolen. I have a friend who had an air compressor stolen while his guys ate lunch in the room next door and they were working on the 2nd floor.

Theft absolutely is a main factor in many stores closing; and it's not just shoplifting. Employee theft is also out of control in lots of places.

Westminster Mall, a former farm field (yes I was around for that), will be homes in 3 years. the EXACT mall design in the Galleria in Henderson, NV. Doing OK I believe.

WWW hurts many retail segments, in many markets, both can survive. I am not an Amazon fan, so much retail+ priced Chinese junk, some good stuff.

Malls close because of poor management, over extended and too many investors with high expectations. Yes, on line sales cut into the brick and mortar sales but, it's all proportional. People will still go shopping, they will buy something they can touch and take home. It's sad to see stores run off customer that want to spend money local and then cry because sales are down. Some people are just not made to be in business.

The mall in my area went bass-ackward when W mart came to town. Lower prices, competition gone, raise prices, no other choices but W mart or online. So the little shops that were in the mall are now dining with Hoffa.

But every year, every year we went shopping on x-mas eve. It is not busy here, so it was fun. Nobody needed anything, shopping was all done, it was all just gag gifts and a good time. All of the gifts were wrapped by some group of volunteers that had to put up with me. I complained once that it was wrapped to good and nobody would believe that I wrapped it etc.... jokingly of course. We all laughed. I was told, that of all the complaints I have ever heard, never heard that.....more smiles and laughs............. That all left with the mall. I miss it. I guess I am just a simpleton.

In Wichita its down to one mall but it seems to do pretty good. Just opened a completely remodeled space that had been sears into a
Sheels. I just walked through that to get to the regular mall area and it was quite a place. Big food court and most spaces rented out.

I had the pleasure of going to the mall in Long Beach off Lakewood blvd back about 15yrs ago. Couldn’t believe the difference between the clothes at that macys vs any other Macy’s I’d ever been too. I think there was more clothes on the floor than hangers and no employees in sight. It was like that in every store in that place.

Malls in good neighborhoods still seem to be doing ok.

Wasn’t that place built over a cemetery? They’ve already got plans in place for another Bella Terra which is a retarded idea imho.

The Mall at University Town Center, University Town Center Drive, Sarasota, FL is stupid busy all the time. Not just the mall, but the surrounding area as well. All the other malls around are dead. Not sure why UTC is so successful.

Was weird when we first got here and I heard about UTC, because I was use to UTC in San Diego.

Westminster Mall was a farm field, and the 405 was just a few years old, so with all of the new houses being built in HB in the mid 1970's, that mall made sense. The cemetery is just over the 405 East of W Mall. The old HB mall was small and sucked. Now Bella Terra, and it is a huge hit, with Costco too.

Well that's certainly a sad commentary, but reading this from two posters did cause me to look further and I stand corrected.

Would have brought a lot of tax revenue to Escondido. I liked the idea for many reasons.

You are definitely in the minority but I understand your view.

Our family is 90% online, the convenience of it all and being able get most everything that same day or the next makes it too simple not to. Plus returns are a breeze if something doesn't fit or the items weren't as described.

I understand it making sense for tossing more dollars into the Escondido coffers. I just didn't get why Costco would want it with that mondo warehouse 7 miles north and another decent sized warehouse 7 miles to the south.
