JMHO.
Most MLB & NBA players couldn’t keep up with players 2-3 decades ago. They are weaker mentally and expect to much catering to.
Older players seemed to have more dedication and loyalty and played for the game not what they might make on their next contract.
Pitchers seem the weakest to me. ( maybe it’s because of the gross money made) but 5-6 max innings on a start. Not 9 or 11 or 13 that true pitchers used to pitch to win a game.

Considering the millions of dollars these players spend per year on their physical health I’d disagree.

Now if you’re saying head to head without that help I’d say sure. But that’s not how todays pro sports are conducted.

Babe Ruth used to play drunk lol

I'm not going to go through and make a list for you, but here is an article from the AP in September that talks about 2nd Tommy John's. The most successful one I can think of off the top of my head though is DeGrom.

And he is not just a DH. He is the best 2-way player to ever play the game. The last player that could pitch anywhere near successfully and hit well was Babe Ruth and even then his stats weren't nearly as good and that was against far inferior hitters and pitchers.

Like I said, I agree that overall the salaries are ridiculous and way over what they should be. But when compared to other MLB contracts, the abilities Ohtani brings to the table are not out of line at all.
As the poster below said u use DeGrom as your example yet DeGrom has not thrown one pitch since having his second TJ. It’s obvious you must be a huge Ohtani fan which is fine but let’s at least try to use something resembling facts when posting info.

How many hitters have had a career average over 300 in the past 15 years? Extremely few. How many of them can hit for power? If you remove the absurdity of the 2019 season, he's a 281 hitter with a 30 HR a season average.

Last year he was #4 on the homerun list in the MLB with 100 fewer at bats than all but Aaron Judge in the top ten. He was #9 in average across the league. How is he NOT an elite hitter?

I understand you played and have an insight just about all of us have no idea of, however the days of a .300 average being a good threshold is long gone with today's pitchers. There were only 9 hitters with over a 300 avg last year. 2 of them were on the Dodgers (Mookie and Freeman) so more than most MLB teams didn't even have a 300 batter.
lots to unpack here....

home runs are what has ruined the game. Its now all or nothing so you have guys like Joey Gallo in the big leagues who hit under .200. Remember the mendoza line? Todays pitching is a joke. There are very few PITCHERS anymore. all you have is guys trying to throw it as hard as they can and dont give two shits about where its going....there is a reason why max sherzer gerrit cole and verlander are the best in the game year in and year out. they actually pitch.

Nerds have completely fucked the game with their analytics turning the game into fantasy league. Gone are the days of coach's intuition and feel......except when you get in the playoffs. the game is a complete joke today and nearly impossible to watch.....

.300 will always be the standard....shohei is fucking good. but he is not remptely close to 70 mill good. if he can pitch in the future and be elite for 4-5 years maybe the contract is worth it. But as a hitter would you pay a guy 50 mill a year to hit 275 with 35 homeruns? No fucking chance.

The state of the game sux. and it sux at the very lowest levels. Travel ball has wreaked havoc on the game. baseball iq is almost nonexistant. i hate it and refuse to go along with the bullshit. I will continue teaching the actual game of baseball to all the kids i come across.....

rant over...but i could go on for days

I've actually heard the opposite. Pitchers are throwing almost none stop since they could walk. After TJ the finally rest there arm for a significant amount of time. But nothing really to support that either lol.
they do the exact opposite. Its the rehab they go through that strengthens the arm and is why they typically come back throwing harder. its not the rest.

Crazy money.....

The Angels should have traded him if they weren't going to be able to keep him. They screwed up. They could have brought in a pretty good roster of players for him.

Wonder what happens to Trout now? Nothing? Same ol' same ol'

Angels had generational talent in both of them and still couldn't win.

Glad the Giants DID NOT get O honestly......Not at that cost
pitching and defense win baseball games not offense. Thats why the nerds and their algorithms have no clue. Ive played and coached in many games in my life. You know how many games ive lost scoring 5 runs or more? Guess how many games ive lost when the team gave up zero?

Good friend caught for the Athletics and coached in their farm system for decades said they never get back to 100% or are the same after TJ.
this is very true for guys already in the big leagues. Not so true about guys that havent got their yet. When it comes to surgery #2 very few guys ever come back better.

How much is a seat at a Dodger game? 😉

I hope he buys a bunch of tickets for kids to fill the stands.
In November Shohei purchased 60,000 gloves for kids in every elementary school in Japan.

I do agree with you that analytics have ruined a lot of the game. I hate the constant pitching changes and nobody ever goes more than 7 innings anymore on a start.

But I totally disagree that pitching is worse. There is 2 to 3 times the lateral movement on pitches now. Not to mention the much higher average velocity across the league.

Let’s do some math. Dodgers annual TV revenue $239 million. Gate revenue over $201 million, BEFORE Ohtani. Let’s call it annual revenue of $450 million.

Payroll, with Ohtani, less than $200 million.

The Dodgers are doing just fine financially, AND remember, their owners are Guggenheim, the deepest of deep pockets.

Seems like a wise move for the MLB’s marquee franchise.

That should not matter, you are good enough or not. 4 to 5 from the bottom is terrible for any team.
The reference was from the 2003 “Moneyball” Team that was portrayed in the movie. Unless we’re just referencing lower end teams making playoffs? Typically there’s always a lower tier team who “makes it” but they never make it past the first round.

Making the playoffs is one thing. Winning the World Series is another story.

I think everyone gets hung up on the talent’s of the players but they forget that these multi million and almost billion dollar teams are about the revenue they bring in.

Like it or hate it Golf might be the last “best player” mainstream sport.

I was only going by your comment and just mentioning what I knew because I was there. I understand your post, I get the whole Money Ball concept. I was only referencing that it was not 20 years since they made the playoffs. I go wait a minute I was there lol.

Sorry didn’t mean to be argumentative just spitting out the facts.

I do stand by golf being the last single persons sport. It truly takes only your talent to be the best.

No worries or issue’s on my end, I do agree on the golf comment, my SIL’s nephew is Devin Bling, he played for UCLA and a few years ago played in the Masters as an amateur. I spoke with him and he said the game is very hard at that level, incredibly stressful. I believe he just tried for his Q card. I think one of the toughest sports there is and talk about being on an island.

Good for him. Sports (baseball) is a business and this signing has way more to do with that side of it than this players talent.

I think the fans are paying way too much for seats if the ball clubs can afford to pay their players that much money.

Good for him he is a special once in a couple generation talent.

I think it will end up going down as a terrible contract like just about all the mega deals long term. 10 years is a long time and they all end up hurt .

I think the Mookie contract is the only one that seems like a deal at this point.

Mookies 12 year deal at 365m has 115 m deferred. He will get over 8m a year starting in 2033 - 2044. 😳😛

Ohtani I has deferred money as well. I have not looked at the contract details, but was reading on a baseball forum that some is deferred for 25 years? Sounds crazy if true.

I say good for him. I’m not hating on him and if Ohtani was your kid you would be celebrating this contract. Hope he buys his agent something nice for Christmas, he earned it.

This deal will actually be a win for the Dodgers. They’ll make a shit ton of money marketing the fuck out of him.

I say if you can get a contract like this then good job.

Ya....kind of speechless on this. I believe the contract has to be OK by MLB so this might change substantially. He makes enough off the field I can see it makes sense for him right now. Deferring taxes, etc.

However.....when does that deferred money kick in and at what length and amounts? Does he get 680M in the 11th year? How would that impact any CBA in effect.....who knows as I don't think the CBA is in effect till that time.

I believe the owners are going to throw a fit over this.

You as an accountant would love to be able to handle all that and would probably advise to defer as well. Of course then you are venturing out of your lane. That crosses into a qualified financial advisor which I am sure he has a good one.

Plus he just failed his physical....lol

And awayyyyyyyyy we go....lol

This structure is gonna to cause big changes and I don’t see other owners being ok with this.

Will this help him on taxes if he moves to a lower cost area?

Meh...not so.much. over paid...hype. But more to the story. Deferrrrrrrrrrrred. Aka hiding from taxation. Smooth move Ohtani. Doyers will reap the benefits and make money quickly with the Ohtani hype. In the end, fans will pay and it will make ticket costs even more out of reach than they already are. Sad.

The earnings will be taxed on when paid in that particular place....I believe. I have deferred money myself but eventually that tax man comes....lol

68 mil per year or 680 mil total will be deferred to the years 2034-2043.

Does the deferred money count towards the luxury tax in the years it is collected? I saw Freeman and Betts also did deferred contracts. Freeman’s deferment starts in 2028 I think. $5 mil a year. Shouldn’t that 5mil count towards 2028 luxury tax?

As of now it won’t count per the current CBA. That may change by 2028.
