So my crazy 1 year old puppy has decided he wants to hop the fence every time he goes in the backyard. It’s time for some shock therapy. Anyone have a brand they recommend? I want something with good range that I can take camping etc. possibly gps?

Dogtra. I drove and picked it up. By King shocks but shipping is best for you. Much bigger operation than I expected. My trainer has been using them for over 15 years.

From the title of this tread I thought Dave was getting out of control . I'll hit you Ron and Karen and see what they have for their dog . They don't even turn it on , just having on the dog works great .

You want it remote controlled?

I use an EZ Educator for my Lab, I've been super stocked with it, it has tons of settings for the stimulator (shock) intensities, and a vibrate or beep modes.
I 99% of time just use vibrate now.

He doesn't need it most of the time, I just use when we are off leash as a safety "tether" in case his nose is on something, or he can't hear me recall him.

Our Basender (Basenji/Border Colie) lives with an e-collar on...lol

Super smart and great 95% of the time but when she gets her mind set on something she needs a zap. We use the beep 75% of the time and the buzzer the other 24% and it works great. She is basically a remote control dog with it on we can be off leash and even if a dog walks to her i can beep it and she returns.

I don't have a model to recommend as we buy the $50 ish ones on amazon and they all seem to shit the bed eventually especially with water play involved.

I use the "SportDOG TEK 1.5LT GPS + E-Collar" it's a little pricey but works well.

SportDOG. SportDOG. SportDOG.

We're on out third one and Dakota is 10 years old.

The first time they replaced it under warranty and it was actually a few months out of warranty.

The second time we purchased a new unit, the 8ish year old one was beat up and not really taking a charge.

We also had to purchase an electric fence because Dakota was going over and under the fence when we weren't home. We got a SportDOG E-fence. She's too smart and started ripping screens when she couldn't escape but at least she stayed in the backyard. Now we just keep her inside when we're gone.

So that $400 one…that’s a shock collar and electric fence program in 1?

Call Dogtra. Tell them what you are in need of. This one shows out of stock but has some cool features.

I have the basic $179 one. It works up to 400 yards. I have 3 different cheaper ones from Amazon. My trainer said no dice with those and had me use one of his. Was at my Realtors house last night. She bought the same 1. Her 10 month old dog is doing a lot better now.

If he is that curious to roam I highly advise you take him in for snake training too.
We have a runner if she spots a bunny. Our pup will run after these "critters" & go deaf all at once😄........so she's leashed outside the house, in most cases.

Sport Dog, you can control multiple collars from 1 controller ( Dave, Kids 🤣 ) Joking aside I hunt a lot and sport dog has been very dependable. They have different ranges to choose from. Remember to use it wisely you can ruin a dog with improper use or abuse.

I couldn't even feel the "shock" until 28. Never had to go over 15. It doesn't hurt the dogs.

While it is expensive, I highly recommend OffLeashk9 training if its in the budget ($2,500). My lab went at 6 months and people can't believe how good she listens. First day back from training I could walk through Lowe's full of people and she would heel the whole time.

My rotties have all been on invisible fence deals for 25 years. They work great for keeping them in the yard..
Funny story. Took my latest one to the dog wash one time. The checker scanned something and the beep was similar. My dog freaked. Pulled/broke out of her collar and ran out the store and headed for my truck at full speed.

Thank you!! I can't believe I never figured it out. All of the sudden our dog wouldn't walk up the street to a hill to piss in the morning.
The batteries on a neighbors smoke detector were dead and it had that beep every 20 seconds or so.
She would get one house up, hear it and haul her ass back to our house. LOL

lmao...our German Shepard did the same thing once...she was in my office just sniffing around seeing what I was up to...and the smoke detector beeped...and she took off so fast to her "place" that she literally scooby doo'd down the tile hallway...lol

I am not sure what collar my wife got for her, but I know she has only been shocked twice and now she knows better...she gets the beep, and once in a while the vibrate if shes being stubborn....

I highly recommend shock collars. It’s been really great training for my kids. It’s just a shame that you have to remove them when they turn 18 for some reason. I’d support a vote for increasing the legal age to about 25.

We use Halo 2's, cost about $600, there was a special down from $995 for a bit. Its gps based, just walk around your property and save the map. You can save up to 20 maps so we make one around our RV when camping. It beeps, than vibrates then lights them up.

Every time I get in trouble or out of hand Diane always just locks me up in here for about an hour. I tend to be pretty good for about a week after that

I have a single experience with a shock collar....

....put it on the stupid dog, and no matter how hard I mashed the button or how high the knob was turned up, it had ZERO effect. It went in the junk drawer, and then one night, we were drinking around the fire pit (all good stories start out way) and the dog did something to piss off one of us and someone said "that dog needs a shock collar"....so after a brief discussion, we remembered where we put it, threw a new set of batteries in it and I sat back down at the fire with the controller in one hand and the collar in the other.

I ran the wheel down to "1" and held the contacts across my thumb and pressed the button. Nothing.

I ran the wheel up to 3 (goes to 5) and tried it again....nothing.

Went to 5 and pressed the button. Nothing.

Stupid thing must be broken.

At some point I was holding the remote and my drink in the same hand and must have held the button down for 3 or more seconds whilst the thing with the 2 contacts was still sitting in my lap.

It wasn't fucking broken....and I'll never hang one of those around my dog's neck again. lol.

Didn't see the cliff notes. Not a professional, but I know how to pick up asshole dogs. The shock does nothing without the disapproval of the master. The shock only works with the command to get in line.
Best teacher for jumping fencing is a coyote roller, bigger pipe over smaller pipe or cable. My fox hound, the current dirtywhitedog, could scale the 6'fence in a single bound until 1 fall on her ass off the roller. She does not even think about jumping anymore.

I will use a shock collar… IF I ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO…

In my experience, if you “prevent“ bad habits, then you never need to use one.
Which is the key reason why I crate train and kennel train, leash and off leash training the first 9-18months…

In my experience… this solves 99% of the problems.

You all have heard about my dumb dog… she is smarter than 99% of the dogs out there.. Her dumb comes out when their are “dominant” dogs trying to dominate her… And she kicks there ass, every time so far… There will be a time, when she meets a dog as stupid as her and teachs her a lesson… Thats the reason why I would use a shock collar, to hopefully train that out of her.

The rest of the situations, I dont need it.

Honestly, I have no plans to buy a shock collar for this problem… I just do my best to avoid the problem and do my best to avoid the situation that leads to her dumb coming out.

A smart dog, knows exactly what a shock collar is, and knows when its on and when its off. A smart dog, will take advantage of that.

Hunting Dogs:
Thats a different conversation. I would use a shock collar/training collar for a hunting dog. Just becuase I dont want to be screaming commands all day, or blowing a stupid whistle… Again, different conversations

Great points. There is NO better or faster way to screw up a dog than a shock collar used incorrectly by a uninformed pet owner.

@RiverDiva - at the very least do some research on Youtube or better yet hire a local dog trainer for an hour or two to walk you through the right way to use the collar. Your dogs temperament, how much training they have had, and how they were trained all factor in to how the collar should be used.

The snake trainer turned up the collar to full tilt on our pup. He basically said your dog isn’t the brightest one here. He’ll keep going after the snake unless i juice him good. Damn dog would jump straight up a couple feet every time. That’s an intense class but well worth it.

When our last dog was about 6 months, I was at a Simi Valley pet store looking at the metal dog collars, those with the prongs which engaged the dog if the collar was strained. The owner of the store approached and ask about the breed of our pup. When I told him she was a Newfoundland, he rightfully refused to sell me that style of collar. Instead, I bought one of the those loose linked metal collars that day. She wore that same collar every day for the next 12+ years. Years prior we had a large male Bassett rescue. He was a big time roamer, any time if and when he could get out. He’d roam far from our house. At our Vet’s recommendation, we had him neutered at about age 3. That drastically reduced his desire to get out and roam. The Vet explained, his nose was so extremely sensitive, he could detect any female in heat within an enormous range.
