If your in Parke, t could be tough, the sewing machine district in downtown L.A always has some good deals on used machines.
Most good machines are pretty well bullet proof, a good used one is OK for home use.

Craigslist is a good place, or Ebay...

I bought a used one a few years ago, had it gone through and have never used it. Let me kick around the idea of selling it and I'll let you know later today :hmm

Hmm. My mom has an old singer sewing machine, I wonder if it can be used for that type of work, marine uphostelry. It's gotta be more than 45 yrs. old, so I doubt it has any plastic parts.

I had a buddy that owned an upholstery shop. I know that machines he had were pretty industrial looking I asked why he didn't use a heavy duty home style o e and he said they wouldn't last a day on his shop. Especially when doing vinyl and leathers.

You have about thirty of them around the corner at Lifeline, maybe they would sell one. Just a thought.

My company has a Mitsubishi Industrial Sewing machine that we purchased from a Auto Interior shop. We had it completely serviced 5 years ago and it was never used. I need to get the model # and talk to my boss but we are definatly trying to sell it. I am also coming up to Parker for DS next weekend so I can deliver it to your shop.
It is similar to this model:

Nate...Don't waste any money on that junk you posted. Bill is correct you need an Industrial machine to do upholstery,

Little know fact I grew up in the Sewing Machine business:grumble: If you don't want to spend the money on the right equipment have someone else do the work:thumbsup

BTW lets get a beer Friday night. Sorry about last week:D

I have an old singer industrial machine that I would be willing to part with. Built like a tank. I think you could sew oak planks together with it if you wanted to. Weighs about 300lbs...conveniently located in IL...so probably not worth the shipping:D

As someone who has also been trying to teach himself how to do upholstery I have a couple of thoughts. The industrial machines are just what the name implies, they will sew your fingers together before you know they went thru. I have bought 2 of them in the last 6 months. The first is a mid 60's Singer. Works real well, even sewed thru 2 layers of tooling cow hide without missing a beat. But trying to feed foam and a layer or two of vinyl thru is a real learning task. That is why I bought the second machine after reading a lot. It has the famed walking foot. It is supposed to be easier to sew thru thick stackups and keep it together better than the standard foot. It too is a late 60's Singer, I have not had time to really mess with it yet but am anxious to try. If you really want to do upholstery try to find a walking foot maching and you will not regret it at some later point when someone wants and old fashioned tuck and roll job. Good luck.

Daughter has her degree in Math and her minor in clothing design and fabrication.
When talking upholstery the first words out of her grill are "fractional horsepower and metal gears" for a machine that does that kinda work.
