Setback Jet - Reverse nozzle dragging

I am 90% sure the reverse nozzle on my setback Dominator is dragging in the water when the jet is trimmed all the way down - and acting like a parachute.

Has anyone else encountered this? The boat is an Ultra 21' Stealth so it's a daycruiser sized boat with a fairly deep vee. It does have a ride plate so I'm wondering if I should try shimming it down...or perhaps just having a new plate fabbed that is 1" longer?

What we did on mine was trim the reverse noozle so it wasn't hanging down below, reverse doesn't work well with the ride plate anyways.

Does your handle have a lock out pin? I mean does your handle Lock in place when in forward position? If yes how much play does your bucket have? Could be your cable is stretched out. Or Your handle needs a lock out type. I have allot of play in mine. it takes a beating when I run the boat.

The locking forward reverse handles are the way to go if you don't have one now. Check with Tom here @ JetBoat Performance. He can set you up!.

Pictures provided as requested with jet in max down trim position. Here are the exact symptoms:

Boat has a hydraulic diverter. When trimmed all the way down there is a slight amount of water splashing up behind the boat as if something is dragging. If I trim up even the slightest bit the water goes away and you can feel the boat surge forward slightly.

Another issue that might or might not be related is sensitivity to trim. If I have it trimmed up a little bit too much the slightest wave or roller will make the boat porpoise. the only way to stop it is either trim down or throttle up to gain speed.

Seems to me this is a ride plate issue - as in excessive up angle. But I'm no expert on ride plates so....

Last picture of the transom adapter plates is for Tom. Josh did a great job on the plates but all the paint is coming off. Please advise on how to repaint them so it will not happen again.

If that's in the forward position and its fully engaged the bucket is blocking the nozzle. There is or should be an adjustment for this on the Handle. Like maybe the the adjustment is on the top hole of the handle rather than the lowest hole. (Where the cable end secures to the handle)

Another adjustment is at the buckets control arm Its a nut on top and one on the bottom. Loosen the nuts and adjust the height to where the bucket clears the nozzle.
Should be an easy fix.

Thanks. Every once in a while I do feel the Fwd/Rev lever pushing back towards the neutral position so what you say makes sense.

I'll mess with it and see if it makes a difference this weekend.

H/R , can't explain the paint , likley is you'll have to simply sand and repaint them Tom

Purely out of curiosity here, but, what angle of degree is your ride plate at? seems to me that its pretty aggressive and your "Full down" PD nozzle also seems pretty aggressive, just a couple of things to think about, it shouldn't take that much down to get it to roll over...obviously the pump would drag in the water if there is so much down in it.

let me know if you come up with any conclusion. I have the same boat and pump with a 502ci. It does 62mph on gps max.

TRG - I do believe there is excessive ride plate angle both by eyeball and the way it drives. Nozzle angle doesn't seem any lower than my last boat so it is probably the angle of the pic.

FlyinRyan - I had my pump rebuilt by Tom in May, took it directly to Laughlin and ran 55MPH with four fat guys, full tanks and two coolers full of beer. So I imagine it's nearly a 60mph rig under ideal conditions. That's with the 6.0 Vortec and setback Dominator.

It runs good but I think it would run better with about 650HP:D
