Anyone have good luck selling a car to them. I have a Acura tl that I plan on taking to them this week as I hate selling shit and do not want to worry about the flakes and tire kickers. No time for that crap. I know I won't get top dollar but just want to be in and out with hopefully a decent offer.

Anyone have any luck???

My experience, they always seem to be $2,000 less than what the dealer would give me as a trade in. If not buying a new car and can't trade it in it's better than messing around with all of the Craig's List knuckle heads.

I traded in a 99 Ranger that was not in the best shape, they gave me double what the dealer offered me, the salesman even told me it was going straight to auction.

Decent offer & CarMax? Lol

Expect them to low-ball you below whatever blue book is. The only positive is that it's likely an easy transaction if you accept their offer & they will write you a check. Easy in & out.

So was this from experience or what you read online?

Most of the cars they take in go to auction, at least that is what the salesman in Roseville told me.

They offered me a little more than what the Dodge dealer gave me for trade in on my 05 Cummins, but I went with the dealer because they wanted less for the truck I traded in for.

I sold my 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 to Carmax they gave me $3000 more than the Chevy dealership would give me. It was easy and got my check right there - no waiting and they were nice too.

Took a Honda Accord to them last year and they offered me the same price the dealer was offering. It's a good place to get a reference.

Never had a good experience. I guess it depends of the vehicle is stock or not.

I took one truck there that was done up ... offered me $11,000 ... I laughed and walked out. Ended up selling it private party for $21,000.

I was curious as to what they would offer me for our old Suburban. Clean as clean can be. I think the number was $14,000 ... I laughed again at walked out. Ended up trading it in and got $18,000 for it at Santa Margerita Ford.

So basically, fuck Carmax. Either sell it private party and make more, or take it somewhere else and olay the numbers game.

Just my take.

If it is on there demand list they will pay. I worked a deal on a nice 740 BMW for my buddy. He drove it for a year and put over 20,000 miles on it. Needed a quick sale and they paid him almost what he was in it for and registration was due. He said they had buyers lined up for a white one like his.

Took a F350 there 6.0 diesel ranked high on there point scale for being clean and low miles but demand scale brought it way down. Offered $9K blue book was 18k after a few months a new set of tires $800 and a injector $600 20 tire kickers I got $9500 off craigslist.

My mom got rid of her 2002 Thunderbird at carmax. It was having a weird overheating issue. The dealer wanted $5000 just to pull the motor to check the heads. She got like $15k for it

Just sold a truck to carmax last week. They game me 2K less than what I saw similar trucks selling for retail online..via autotrader and cargurus.

I knew the truck needed a whole new sunroof replacement and the front end diff needed to be redone. I figure with the work I needed done, my price was very fair considering the ones being sold didn't have those issues.

It depends on the vehicle. Other times, the dealer was better.

Yeah, they want all stock cars. I have a buddy that works for them. Anything not stock, gets put back to stock. A lot of the aftermark parts tend to "disappear".

I have tried a couple times. Carmax wants completely stock cars. I think lower their offer to compensate for whatever it is going to cost for Parts & Labor to put it back to stock.

I agree ... my old truck had a lift on it with a lot of extras, but the Suburban was stock and they still low balled me. Oh well, just my experience.

I sold a car there once. It was painless. I got the same offer from them that all the lowballers were throwing but with a fraction of their hassle. It took an hour or so and I walked out with a check.

If your car is stock or near stock and you can stand to lose $2-$4K, go to Carmax. It will be a painless deal.

If your car has suspension, interior or engine modifications, don't bother going there.

If you want top dollar and it is a nice, desirable car, sell it yourself. They wanted to give my dad $13K for his super clean 01 Corvette with 50K miles. I sold it for him in a month for $18k.

Very true!!! Definately a simple sale and transaction. Just wish I didn't sell that one but at least the reason for selling this car is to make room for a new dually build.

I would say it is very vehicle specific. I sold cadillacs and chevy's for a few years each, and if it was a trade in offer offer for stock on our lot, we could beat car max's offer usually. Like a cadillac in decent shape at the cadillac store. But if someone came in with like a dodge truck to trade in, Car Max could do better than what I could get out of sending it to the auction. I always advise friends to look at both options, and of course private party if you have the time will net you the most money. and finally, to beat the drum again, blue book values are quite arbitrary by nature, and I put no stock in them, as what cars fetch are always referred to as "how much back" of book they are going for, never over. Kelly Blue Book will not buy your car, never have bought a car, they really are in business of establishing values to guide banks on what to lend on vehicles, not what they are worth. What they are worth are what people "will raise their hand and pay for today". Range rovers in my day would get hit at 15k-20k back of book on low mileage recent purchases. Biggest dogs I ever had to take in, and Mercedes G wagons.

Well it went well. Very easy process and was fairly quick even with the hundreds of people there for Black Friday. They appraised it 1500 more then I thought they would and it was 500 more then I was planning on listing for private party. In and out within an hour with check in hand.
