SWAT Detective So. He is only the 2nd line of duty death in the department’s history. Story I got is that while serving a warrant a rifle fell out of a vehicle being searched and discharged. Not so sure as to the truth of this but limited details being released.

Some of them do, especially guns modded by crooks and wannabe gangsters
...and also some shitbox handguns I've seen. Some sketchy "imports".

The only thing we know for sure, a father and husband didn't come home. Doesn't matter much the profession, or the reason, none of that probably matters to the family today 😔

Guns don’t discharge themselves when they are dropped..

If that’s the story, then something is being covered up.

More common than you think, there's some drama surrounding the expensive staccato 2011s that they can go off when dropped on the muzzle.

There was a range officer that was killed in a USPSA match a couple years ago when a CZ Shadow 2 was dropped on the hammer and it had enough inertia to set off the primer.

Hahahaha... Wrong. But we are all free to believe what we want to.

I were from the south the proper response would have been... "Oh bless your heart Dave."

R.I.P. to this officer.

I agree with you 99.8% of the time.
However it has happened… if you have the time to dig into the interweb…

You will see that Remington and Ruger had recalls on their rifles, replacing the triggers due to this happening… In addition, I think this is a key reason why Ruger has the accutrigger system/design now.

As a matter of fact… My brother in law, had a Ruger model 1 (think thats it - rolling block single shot one) in a 243 went off during a hunting trip. Note: my BIL is an outfitter, and a foreman of a 8500acre big game high fence ranch in texas, with 60 years of experience.

Remington 700's didnt do this for a long time until it was proven they actually can. Also im not sure what the experience is with modified triggers. I have experienced a trigger so light i you couldn't place your finger on the trigger until you were absolutely ready to take the shot (i did not like it). This is why it is very important to practice muzzle control/awareness and clear every weapon as soon as you can. Gosh dang this sucks!

God bless this man and his family.

That’s tragic.

It can absolutely happen.

I’ve also seen guys strap their rifles into soft cases, with the securement straps through the trigger guard and trigger. With the right weapon configuration, that weapon will absolutely discharge. This officer being on SWAT, I’m sure knew better, and I’m very curious for more details on this one personally.

A highly trained tactical swat operator would not have a round in the chamber when their rifle is secured in a rifle bag or case. Terrible tragedy for sure, I’m wondering what the hell happened.
Unfortunately, things happen. I had a buddy that worked for one of the bigger weapons dealers up here. They bought "trade ins" from PD's. I guess when the force would upgrade, they'd give them credit on the older units. The first order of business, as coming out of the truck, was to make sure they were cleared. He said it seemed there was always one. Sometimes 3-400 units, but still not good.

Horrible situation for the officer and family.

If anybody is so inclined, donations can be submitted through the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Advisory Council, which is a 100% volunteer 501c3 non profit that coordinates fundraising for various MCSO initiatives including the Memorial Fund. 100% of money donated to the Memorial Fund is granted to law enforcement families.
