Recently purchased a RZR turbo r and plan on visiting freinds and family quite a bit in Havasu but do most of my offroading in CA. I know that an ohv decal can be purchased for a non resident but can a non resident also get a street legal plate? What needs to be done to get a rzr street legal in AZ?

If there was ever a subject in the OHV forums with dozens of ridiculous different answers this is it.

First of all it’s expensive if you want the street legal registration.

Last I paid for one year for the X3 max it was $600.
Anyone who says they paid less is either spinning a fairytale or they don’t have the street legal registration.

Register it to the friends Havasu address and put you home address in the resident section. You’ll get the plate and paperwork sent to your home.

Second year I paid for 5 years in advance and that knocked a good chunk off the cost.

You need a rear view mirror, horn, turn signals - flashers, brake lights and insurance.

Several companies make kits. Some kits are klunky and ugly, some kits blend right in with your existing lightning with excellent controls.

You can DIY or I had a sound shop do ours as long as they had the X3 apart and were adding a sound system.
Didn’t cost much.

Parker Yamaha offered the ugly klunky kit for an installed ridiculous price.

If you have any issue go to the AZDOT and talk to a full time employee. Not to a student or temp worker.

Well TPC nailed that one. Only thing I would add is that most people for got the less expensive registration which is “mostly off road”. It allows you to drive on the street to some extent which will be widely debated in this thread soon. It will require you to get insurance if you don’t have it already.

I have primarily off road perfectly street legal registration for $4.50 a year and $25 OHV sticker and $20 AZ state land permit.
Been doing it before RZR was even a word. No way can they prove if I've been primarily on road or off road.
Paying registration in advance doesn't save you anything other than paying renewal every year. Registration automatically decreases 16% every year. If anyone believes the fairy tale that the state gives discounts for vehicle license tax then I'm Santa Clause.
AZ doesn't require turn signals, just rear view mirror, horn, lighted plate, and insurance.

Do you have to have it inspected at an Az dmv office? Or can you just go to a 3rd party place and register like any other vehicle?

No inspections. You sign an affidavit that says you put on the street legal requirements.
You can do 3rd party. Quick Stop on Mesquite does it but I think there's an extra charge.
The MVD in Havasu has been really fast.

Tpc pretty much nailed it. But turn signals aren’t needed. Good to have though I drive a buggy and get tired of hand signals.

Not sure what the deal is on the primary off road/partial street for sxs. Think it has to weigh under 2400 pounds now to do that. Before the cut off was 1800. (Not 100 percent sure on this and the new weight cut off though.)

So think if over 2400 pounds you have to go with the primary road/partial off road.think that is why they get dinged for higher price fees. And doesn’t matter if it’s primary off road partial on road guy that helped write the law on that said it had something to do with the vehicle lic fee and how to add it to atvs. Mvd will say it’s just for crossing roads which is bs.

When i registered my 2021 the weight cutoff was 1800lbs. Anything over that weight had to get the full street legal plate. I think it was 600 or 800 at the time. The weight on the title was 1813lbs… 2 seat can am.

2500# is the new limit. Over 2500# you pay full VLT, vehicle license tax, and it's primarily on road.
MVD knows the weight of your ride and msrp. Doesn't matter what you paid for it.
You can calculate what your VLT will be here,
If you have the rv plate that comes with your new ride then yes it's only for off road use and crossing a road
If you have primarily off road plate then you can ride 30 miles off road to the Bunker bar and then hit the hwy for 10 miles home and be perfectly legal, no drinking of course :p
If you feel more comfortable buying full on road and that's all you use your ride for then go for it.

Since when do you need turn signals and flashers?

Do you have anything that shows that 2500# is the new limit? I’m going to Havasu in a few weeks and want to get mine changed to primarily off road. Right now I have only off-road and am taking my chances driving around town.

Flashers/Turn-signals aren’t required but a license plate light is FYI. Some areas also require a whip/flag 8’ above the ground. Otherwise the list is correct. I got pressured into registering primarily on road by the MVD employee. She said if I ever drove it on the road not just to get to a trail, her example was to go buy milk, then I had to register it primarily on road. I have since heard that is complete crap from other MVD employees but haven’t changed it since my reg is good until April. Screenshot of the OHV requirements is attached. For some reason MVD links to AZGFD for the OHV laws even the street legal part.

One thing I just learned, from my buddy that got a ticket last night. No lighted pole (aka 5150 lighted whip), he was coming up Mcculloch at 7pm, just past smiths, The popo, pulled him over, asked for license/reg/proof of insurance. And sighted him for his led whip lit on the street. I never knew this.

I am surprised more people do not get popped for this. I always stop before going from the dirt to the street and turn off all non-road legal lights and take it out of 4wd.

Yep, no go on whips
Curious what type of registration he had and if they cared

You know what’s stupid.

AZ DMV wouldn’t except my progressive insurance. It had to say AZ on it.

Even though progressive covers me what ever state I go to.

I had to get a new progressive policy with my AZ address.

I believe you can’t run the fire roads, or the county dirt roads. If you happened to get stopped during hunting season, at a check point, it could be a ticket.

Opening Dove season usually gets them out on the back fire/county roads.

I think the saying goes” if you’re planing on breaking a law, only break one at a time. 😉

In 2019 / 2020 AZDOT switched over to a new computer software program and hardware system.
Often new registrations got stalled in the transition.
Read that: stalled like slow.

Took quite some time to get it straightened out.

The rest is BS folklore in the SXS and sand & dirt forums. Geezus did it create tall tales growing a leg each post.

I still haven’t met “that lady” that works in the AZDOT office that sticks the red hot length of coat hanger up your ass, then has you lifted completely off the floor by your nut sac, then after all that, no plate.

There are easily 10’s of thousands of SXS registered in Az. Over 100.000 wouldn’t be a stretch.

Drive thru Quartzsite right now and you’ll be a believer. Check the AZ plates on SXS at the massive RZR get together in Glamis.

They are welcome in Az and at $600 a pop per unit per year is a shitload of money.

Traffic accidents involving them are seldom but when they do occur, remember how many SXS are rolling out there and it’s often some reporter talking it up like it’s an epidemic.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding but that's all we run northern AZ. Been doing it for about 20 years and sheriff has seen us numerous times.
Been getting so busy the last few years that we don't ride on weekends

Thanks 185EZ!

I have another question. I’ve got a X3 Max, so I’ll be in the 1800-2500# group. I think I paid under $100 bucks for the off-road only when I originally did it. What is the “Full Vehicle License Tax”?

I see that there is no registration fee.

Thanks for the calculator zx.

Yea, $464 for the first year. Now I remember why I registered it for only off-road.

This subject has been argued to death here. @BoatCop explained the differences in the registration. If you do primarily off-road, you’re only allowed to go directly to the dirt. You’ll have some argue here that they’ve never gotten a ticket even when they’re bar hopping and grocery shopping in their sxs’s. Still doesn’t make it legal, but it’s rarely enforced. One of their points was that the ticket would be cheaper than paying for full registration over time. I do primarily off-road in mine, but Parker is a little different logistically than Havasu. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Mike, be aware this DOES NOT include your off road sticker. You still need that as well for $25.

I particularly enjoy being lectured about the legality of my UTV registration by the guys in the Magic Box thread stealing cable TV 😂

Thanks Ashley. Yea, $500 to be able to drive from my buddies garage to the dirt? I’ll keep taking my chances.
You're not taking chances. Enjoy the savings the state gave you.
Nothing illegal
Nothing anywhere says you have to ride straight to the dirt
Not sure where people are getting these ideas
I'll repost AZ law for those that want to read it
Show me where I have to ride straight to the dirt or i can't ride on the highway
We enjoy cruising downtown Williams AZ at night and watching fireworks.
We are criminals lol

Thanks for the info.

Im thinking that with my off-road only plate/registration, I’m taking my chances driving it on the road. Yes? No?

Heres a pic of my plate.

They used to put MC for motorcycle plate in the numbers. If you have off road only then yes you would be taking chances on the road

So we just got home from Havasu. Yesterday when I was there I went to the MVD. I had an OHV only plate on my 2019 CanAm X3 Max and wanted to change it to a primarily off hwy so I can drive it from my friends garage to get gas and to the trailhead. It took 15 minutes and $36 to change it. I had to be under 2500 lbs and I had to have insurance.

I had the same experience. The only issue I faced was I had to have AZ road insurance and not CA insurance that I had at the time.

You will need AZ road insurance within *I believe* 30 days or they will invalidate your registration.

Hmm, she didn’t say anything about that. I’ve got Geico coverage on it, I’ll have to check if that will work.

Yea check it out. It’s got to be AZ road insurance.
