Can anyone recommend a legit charity?
Acquired a Jaguar that I don't have time to mess with. Looking for the tax write off, but not quite sure how that works???

I tried to do this when my Dad passed. The car was his brother's (my uncle) and he had passed years earlier but hadn't been registered in 10 years. And to make it more difficult, it was registered in Idaho. Nobody would take it. I was ready to go park it on a street and leave it, it would never be trace back to us............I didn't do that. I basically put a Craiglist add out, stating no paperwork, nothing, someone came and got it. I even had it running..................

basically without it being in my name, no charity wanted it

I donated a car to St. Jude last year. Went to their website and a transport company picked the car up the next morning. They sold it at auction for what they said was below $500 and so I didn't get the 1099-C to claim it on my taxes. For reference blue book on the car was $3-3.5K. Was pretty lame but at least the funds went to a good cause. Might be worth tossing on FB marketplace for a deal and offloading it quick and pocketing some cash to avoid the same scenario I had.

Cars for kids is a Jewish school in upstate New York. Most people don’t know that. You might want to consider donated locally so you’re local charity gets the benefit.

my experience with this has been not good. The charity will not fill out the change of ownership paperwork that comes with the pink slip because they are going to flip the car or motorcycle as fast as they can. My friend donated a car and I donated a motorcycle and both were used to commit crimes and or parking tickets and toll road tickets that came to my Address for months before my friend and I got it cleared up.

I donated a boat to a charity years ago (it was functional and not in too bad of shape, but would have been a tough sale). The guys who picked it up were a couple of goofballs and wouldn’t or couldn’t provide or sign a receipt, and the charity ghosted me. I submitted a change of ownership to the State, and took the federal income tax write off. I don't know what the result would have been had I been audited, as I had nothing to prove the transfer aside from the form I sent the State, but it worked out.

We donated my son's old Cherokee. He blew the motor after I had just put on $900 worth of new BFG all terrains. I think they got $500 for it. You're better off selling it cheap and quick.

Looks like a decent car...how much you want for it?

Looks like a decent jag well if private party. Donations are a pita and never seem to work out for the donator.

IF you can get someone to come get it, the best you'll get is a $500 write off, because conveniently that's all they EVER sell for......

FB or CL for a "get it gone price" will yield way better results, or here honestly. There are always guys grabbing projects on this site.

I had the same experience. In about 2005 I donated my 1988 Chevy 1500 (wish I would of kept it) to the American Cancer Society. The pick up and paperwork was quick and easy. Then about 2 months later I kept getting parking tickets and Denver Boot notices regarding the truck in areas of Downtown Los Angeles. They told me the exact same thing, that the charity never changes the title over and the buyer at the auction didn't either, so it remained in my name. I sent in all the release of ownership paperwork to the DMV several times and they finally stopped sending me the outstanding tickets. It took several months to finally get it sorted out.

Try carmax. They gave me a fair deal on a car I was thinking of donating. Trans was starting to go out and a new trans was more than the car was worth. I asked the guy what they do with the cars and he said if they are more than a few years old they just go to auction. It's more of a service to them, they don't use that to get cars to sell. This was over 10 years ago so I don't know how they operate now.
