Growing up in the 60's, most of the dad's loaded up their sons the first few days of summer for a hair cut. That meant close and tite all around or the Marine cut. It must have been 1969 and my buddies decided to not go along with the summer cut. They came from a family of 11 kids with 5 girls, 6 boys. Normally Mr Wherry would put them in back of the company pick up truck, and drive them to Joe's barbershop. Note he worked for a construction company and in the 60's every one road in the bed of trucks, today they would fire him for that!
Tim was a year older from me and always the ring leader can up with the plan that after dad loaded them in the truck they would wait to he got to the end of the driveway then jump out and run into the woods and hide.
Mr Wherry was pissed and nabbed a few of the younger kids on the spot and they came back with extra short cuts. Over the next few nights after he work he grabbed the rest and they all ended up with skin heads for the summer.
My dad warned my brother and I if we tried it, he would get the same. But over the next few years long hair was really in and we all just kept fighting and when I was in high school my hair was long and I never visited Joe!

I have fond memories of sitting at the dinner table my hair was long (for the times) and hanging over my eyes and face. My dad reached over and smacked the hair out of my face just barley missing my face...

Scared the crap out of me because he never hit me... That was my moms thing.... usually a wooden spoon

My dad was too busy when I was a kid. He left for work at 5:30 am and didn't come home until 6pm or sometimes even 7pm. My mom didn't care much, she was busy shopping. So at 11 through my teens I mostly had longish hair. Summer 1986 I was 13 and with Top Gun in theaters. I got a buzz cut.

At 12 years old I had just moved in with my dad and step mom. Had the long punk skater cut going. Dad being the hard sss Marine hated it.
Dad drops me off to get my haircut and says get it high and tight. I did.
And got 13 stripes shaved around the bottom of my dome. He was so pisssed.

In Carlsbad, circa 1974, if you were graduating 8th grade heading for Carlsbad High, you didn’t need your Dad to take you to get a Summer cut.
Tradition was you would get “Clipped” by the high school Seniors. Especially if you were an athlete you had no chance.
By the third week of June most all the 8th grade guys had been caught and given a free haircut!
Any of the rest of you had that tradition back in the day?😂
Imagine if it was still happening!
Ahhh, the good ol’ days!

In a beach town we have always worn our hair longer than the average. The only ones I remember getting tight haircuts in the summer were the football players in preparation for hell week and the punkers.
