Schiada Checkerboard Boats

I am pretty sure my dad or John told me about the brown checker. It was an older guy who was cruising down Parker and saw one of the checkers in the group. He came by and was all fired up to see boats like his. I am told he just loved his boat and was in great shape. Funny thing is I asked my dad and he couldn't recall. I'm pretty sure its out there however.

So I am putting two and two together...Is your boat (Wiley Coyote) the one that was just recently found in storage for a long time? What a great find!

I remember back I had a chance to buy Harry Canary but I just got out of college and had no money. Now I wish I would have bought it. I hate 20/20.

I thought I remembered seeing a picture of John and Cleve's boat on the water in front of RedRock, but I havent found it. I know for fact that we dont have any pictures of your guys's boat. Just good memories. Are you guys making it out this Oct.?

The Villegas's are going up Oct.3rd thru the 7th. I may try for that first weekend in Oct seeing as how weekdays are harder to get off of work.

Cool, always nice to hear a new engine fire up! We are waiting for a new engine too! I can't wait to have it all together. The old engine...well I finished her off on the last river trip. She was old (ran over 25 years) and it was time to put her down.

Wasn't sure if it was a repaint as in "let's repaint the original checkers" or a repaint as in "let's make it look like a 90's Eliminator" .

That picture of the blown flatty at the bottom of #52 is the Harpers 66.The Schiada lettering on the rear sides of the hull is Rassies handywork.I had that boat for a few years after they had it.Just noticed it.By the way congrats on gettin Wiley back in the water!

Hey guys, I was just looking over this thread curious of the remaining checker boats. Love seeing all the other ones out there. My dad and I have a blue on blue checker that has been in the family for a long time. Right no we are giving it some "upgrades." The name of the boat is Wake Dancer and used to have a number 70 on it. So you can add it to the list. Let's see if the pic comes up.

Ryan, any interest in bringing the Schiada flatty to the US Open in Parker @ the end of September and pulling me? Will need to do some prep work, but wouldn't mind skiing the flatty class if you're up for pulling me. I have lifelines and helmets. Will need to xray rudder, make sure there is a kill switch, driver will need a physical/cpr class. Would be cool to get you out there. Circles @ parker are a blast....just remember I'm 200' behind the boat and wait till I get out of the turn before sticking your foot in it Very sweet flattie by the way!

In my opinion, nothing about that hull design says Schiada. Interesting paint choice though.:thumbsdown

I've been in the middle of boat rebuilding projects for the past 5 years and know this stuff doesn't happen overnight. When you get her up and running, and are comfortable, would be great to meet up and would love to go for a ski behind your Schiada.

I think that's Lake Puddingstone. I never did get in contact with the owner. The guy who snapped the photos said he just met the owner(Gene), talked boats with him and didn't get contact info. Bummer...

Ryan - FYI. Ours is going in for gel-coat this week. Gonna get the cap rail and the back done. That and a few other things. I think I will start a new thread showing the progress of it. Ron Woodruff donated the Cary prop from Psychedelic to my boat years ago and it's still in use today. :thumbsup

This boat was originally built to be a K boat but the fella who ordered it changed his mind due to the color(apricot) of the checkers. John Villegas has owned it since he was in his early 20's. After a short sleep it's about to be completely freshened up and back on the water.:thumbsup

Yes, I currently own this boat. It was painted white and blue when I bought it. I had it blasted and revealed the original checkered gel coat.

To be honest, you are the first person to give me so much as a name. I would love to know more. There wasn't a name uncovered in the gel coat. I found the vintage picture that sure looks like it, nothing more.

I think I gave you the wrong name though. Billy's boat was Suddenly I think Bill Sr. used Instantly as noted in an earlier post in this thread. PM Ryan he has a lot of history on the old checkerboard (and other old Schiada) flat bottoms.

I believe it was named "Nothin Fancy". No hole in the bottom just a lot of cracks. When the old floor was pulled up, it had two layers of plywood. So maybe they repaired it. What can you tell me about this boat?

I apologize for the crappy photos. I took these in 2009 before I had a fancy cell phone camera. The boat was for sale in Los Angeles somewhere, maybe Santa Monica, and parked in the lower structure of an apartment building. I glanced it over, crawled under and found a crack under it possibly from a prop ear coming loose. It wasn't what I was looking for at the time so I passed. Had I known what was under the paint...I may have brought it home.

Yes, that is definitely the boat I have. I did purchase it out of an underground parking garage in LA off of Wilshire I believe. I would love to know more of the history as a checkered flatty. I do have paperwork, it is registered as a '72 SPCN. I have not been able to locate a VIN number on the hull. I did take it to schiada in Long Beach to have it verified as an original though.
