Some of you may be following my posts as I install a blown sbc from speed ski boat "warpath" into my pro-street 55. I finally managed to get the glenwood oil cooler off, but now I wanted to verify that it had a cam retainer plate. The motor had a cam driven water pump, which I'm obviously removing, so I wanted to make sure I didn't need to address cam thrust.

As luck would have it, I don't see a cam retainer plate, so I assume the cam thrust was managed with the water pump and drive. So my questions.

Can I simply install a cam retainer plate, or do I need to install some sort of cam button?

Do I need a new timing chain cover, or do they offer a block off plate for the glenwood cover?

I don't do a lot of sbc, so have never set up a cam retaining plate. You could make a plate for the Glenwood cover if you want to use it, but then it's not likely you can buy a cam button that would work with it. Possibly a BBC button would work with a little bit of fitting.

Thanks Barry, after doing a little more research, it appears that my cam is not designed for a thrush plate, as it does not have a step at the end. Looks ill be adding a cam button. The crank has a big block snout so I'll just get a new timing cover that works with a button

if your glenwood cover will work with your drive abd water pump, just remove the blade style drive. replace with cam thrust button kit/retainer and a disc (stepped in or releived to the proper depth and matching the bolt holes in cover) is the simple and effective solution.

I just made a plug that the cam button can reference. Sorry for the crappy pic and hardware holding it down while I was whittling away. Didn’t take any pics of it finished up.

Cover look familiar 😉
I guess I shoulda made 2.

Thank you guys for the responses. I just ordered a cover from Cloyes. It looks like a clean setup and I don't have the resources to machine a cover for the Glenwood unit.

So you don't need the Glenwood cover with the BBC crank seal any longer? I know somebody who is looking for one. If you're selling it.

Yes, I'll sell it. I should have it off the motor in a week or so.
