Anyone have some info on getting a Bubble Deck Sanger 5/8" Runner bottom to handle? Prop info? Gears? Horse Power?
We are running a 37% gear, 11 x 15 negative lift Menkin's designed for a Runner Bottom with a 975 HP Blown Motor?
Any help would be apprectiated, Thanks

For either the circle runner or drag hull Billy B. has your info. You'll have to call him.

What is it doing? What is the max RPM you want to go through the lights at? If it's a standard block BBC, you usually don't want to go over 7600-7800rpms. We used to go through at 8200-8400, but the engines didn't last long.

We used to run a smaller prop with taller gears too, but a lot of the quick guys will run 18-22 gears, maybe 25's with more bite on the prop.

Is your center fin cut at an angle? It will handle better if it is not, but you can pick up a bit of speed without it.

Plates are very important to have set right as well. A bit lower on the outside.

Boats are like wings too. The balance front to back is really important. Moving the engine forward or backwards can change the handling.

Lots of variables, but if you post some videos some will be able to help more. If you go to a race, a lot of guys will help you out and you'll get your boat set up much faster.

I will try and send pics and video, 540 cu in Dart block, motor is 35 1/2" forward measuring from inside transom to motor plate, plates are up about 3/8" to 1/2" and center plate is a bit higher, outside edges are up also. Double fins with a radius leading edge like a shark fin, wedge rudder (I need to measure how long), not racing it, 5500 it runs about 115 mph but a handful, plenty of pedal left.

I just finished restoration on this Sanger, came out nice, customer wanted me to use as many parts as possible that were originally from the day his Dad rigged it in 76. I was able to recondition the v-drive and polish it, re-chromed the override control handle, polished the turn buckles, powder coated the override and throttle pedals and fit them to a new override system but that was about it, everything else was basically new.

Learn something new everyday.. I didn't even know they made runner bottom circle boats. I thought they were all drag flats.

… Sanger made both… Circle runner bottoms and drag runner bottoms…my Sanger runner is a circle runner… And corners remarkably well…🤷🏽‍♀️ I have no advice on the setup of the boat posted as my LS seven big block Chevy rotates in the opposite direction as the circle runner posted.,,🤷🏽‍♀️

That’s a beautiful boat!!

There aren’t many people that know how to set up a Sanger circle runner. They do turn really well just not quite like a b boat.

There were a handful of K teams that ran the Sanger circle runner back in the 70’s. Chuck Boyd had a Sanger sponsorship for 6 years for his Hobbit team. Rick Williams Trojan Ghost was a Sanger. The Justice K boat was a Sanger, Wendell Page out of Utah ran one.

Looks like the Sanger circle runner was quite popular in the mid 70's.
What's the difference between a circle runner and drag runner's hull design?

Most obvious is the circle runner has a deeper forward chine, and rounded gunnel at the transom. There's also at least 2 different Sanger Drag runners. Sanger built many different types of flatty hulls throughout the years.

I too had a 1976 Sanger 5/8" Circle Runner Bottom in the 90's
It was raced for a few years and then stored in a Barn in Riverside.
It was super clean like show room condition with only a tach in the dash everything else was on the motor.
I re-plumbed it, added some water to the headers to quiet it down and splashed it, it flat out hauled ass and turned on a dime.
It was set up right from the start when I picked it up, and I do remember the plates being turn down on the outer edges.
18's in the gearbox and a 11-1/4" x 16" Menkens
Some guy walked up to me and wanted to buy it, I sold it and it went back east never to be seen again, I wish I had that boat today :(

Thanks for the info SS. Do you by chance have any pix to illustrate the differences?

I don’t have a picture file of all the different Sanger boat bottoms. I might be able to get close on transom shots but not the keel changes.

Thx SS, pretty much what I figured but thought it couldn't hurt to ask. Hot female bottoms are typically the only ones photographed around boats. With boats specifically it's tops n hardware/rigging. Maybe peeps that have them can take pix of theirs and post them? What the deepest runner Sanger ever made? 1-1/8", 1-1/2"?

Not sure what the design team may have experimented with, but they’re generally 5/8” I think. Brendella had the deepest runners I’ve seen.

Beautiful boat! I'm sure Billy B would be a great resource. When I picked up the motors, I thought Mike said the boat was in Needles, so it would be easy for Billy to check it out.

It seems I see more Sanger circle runner bottoms than drag runner bottoms. I have a few friends that have/had circle runner bottoms.

Does anybody else think the EZ up style shade directly on the trailer ( Saw "Valkyrie" K boat next to Hobbit in one of SS's pics). is the most Gangster thing ever? I pull a drag boat at Ming on most race weekends. I always feel sorry for the drivers waiting at the in-ramp. Sweating to death, while I sit in the AC...

Since we’ve strayed let’s include the rare Syndicate tunnel runner. Jimmy basically took the center runner, split it down the middle and moved it to the out side. Then stepped up about an inch for a foot, then stepped up about another inch down the middle where the strut is.

wow, look how different that is. Have anymore pix of this little gem? No wonder I was having such a hard time understanding Coolchange's description I was trying to envision a typical runner bottom not a tunnel and a stepped one at that. haha guess I need more coffee. 🙃🤪
Sooo the big question is how well did it work? Did it handel well? Was it dis-allowed in drag compitition because it gave an unfair advantage? or because it was a tunnel? Were they spooky to drive at speed? And lastly, is that a Sanger Catalina to the right of this Syndicate?

I don't have your answers. I saw it cruising slow in the water one time and I never saw this one or any others at the track. Someone else might know or you could maybe call Jimmy LaRicca.

Definitely not a Sanger Catalina next to it. That was Duff's ski boat.

He didn’t make but a few. To my memory he built one and it was run as a bgf alittle.
They took a motor out of another bgf and put it in the syndicate. It went about 3-4 mph faster. Accuracy of the rest is ?
I
My mind tells me it was Bad Moon Rising?
I also want to say it was Jerry “the Hammer” Hanks that drove it. Hanks drove one of jimmies boats, pretty sure it was this one.
Feed back was it worked good. I don’t remember if it was “ruled” out because some said it was a tunnel not a flat.
Jimmy built a good solid boat.

Ok, thx. SS. In the pic it appeared as the though the transom corners were angled like the Catalina.
You have a great video of Jimmy La Ricca making a nice wheelie pass @ red rocks I believe in a BGF. Its in 1 of your v-drive videos.

Thanks for the info. Roger, it's a cool looking boat with that blower eng. Set up on the d.d. shaft angle. Very unique. Is that a all wood hull?
It is fiberglass. I don't know if the hull all fiberglass, or a wood frame with fiberglass skin over it.
