What material makes it different?
I spent a good amount of time figuring these out, I’ve been running the same one in my boat for almost three years now, but I’m also very good to remember to always remove mine from my wrist before moving from the seat. It’s also thicker and went through the hassle of getting the material to a much higher tensile strength, which is nice but also means that they come to me in precut lengths. All are same or slightly longer than the factory mercury cloth ones as that’s what all the testing was done with. Will the stretch and wear out? Yea absolutely but that’s all in how they’re treated, but i hung a 20# weight from one over night and the overall stretch in the morning was maybe 1” more.

I mean, if they dont use them at sanctioned events, for sure getting the general public to use them is futile.

I always wear mine on the wrist. Its ignorant not to.

After this incident I’m sure they are considering making it mandatory 🤷🏻‍♂️

That event they were mandatory as are all events. But once through tech how can they enforce that it’s actually worn. Also the story, which i find very hard to believe, was that it broke!

Only time I don't wear mine is if I'm not leaving a 5 mph bay.

Years ago, my neighbor fell out of his dory boat trolling (and drinking) solo about 10-15 miles off the beach. (no killl switch)
It was a tiller steer, and the motor kicked to one side . . . then did circles around him.
After treading water, and attempting to grab onto the boat as it passed him 2-3 times . . . he finally was able to hold on and drag himself back in.

Close call with death on that one, and an eye opener for me.

It’s super easy, 3/4” hole and then two screws, the yellow ignition wire from switch to engine gets this in place to interrupt the signal of switched off.
Plastic and aluminum are both available from most boat shops, if you’re anywhere local to Fort Mohave bring it over it’ll take an hour.
You can find plastic one on eBay or Amazon but same 100$ range.

If I need the safety lanyard it's all over anyway
The % of people that are not wearing a lanyard (that works properly) who get hit by their boat after being tossed out is very high. If I remember correctly it just became a federal law that you had to wear one if the boat was under 25' or so. I don't agree with the law, but I don't want to pay the fine more. I also don't want anyone to get hit my boat, so there is that too.

There won't be anything left of my boat to get hit by. And it's set up to stall if my foot isn't on the throttle. In a sub 500 lb 100+ mph outboard v bottom the lanyard mysteriously getting pulled is another thing on the list of what can go wrongs.

They did make it a law. So I guess enforcement is not too bad, yet.........

According to a new federal law, the use of a safety lanyard and engine cut-off switch (aka a kill switch) is now mandatory on recreational powerboats under 26 feet operating in federally regulated waters, unless your boat has a helm inside a cabin or creates less than 115-pounds of thrust (about three horsepower).

Your situation with a foot pedal, is understandable. However the lanyard on most is more for the fact it may save a random innocent life.
The post with the Cheetah on the beach, imagine had that been Labor Day weekend, or any weekend day in the summer, people would be dead simply for the drivers lack of wearing one.

Years ago I remember a gnarly story from the CA Delta, that spooked me on the killswitch deal.
Bass guys flying at early light take-off mid winter.
Dude slammed something underwater with the lower unit.
Ejected the driver, no killswitch . . . motor breaks off the transom, flips up and into the boat still running, and the prop chews up the passenger pretty good.
Guy survived . . . but heard it was ugly.
