Route help in Cali

So I’d like to go see my daughter, sil and 2 granddaughters in Goleta. I do not want to drive through LA traffic. Been there done that with the last Rv travel trailer we had. Even though I used to do that when I was still trucking, a lot has changed in that time. Not really wanting to take the Moho pulling the jeep through that mess. Any ideas? Probably be coming from Ariz this winter. What cha got?

This route when towing. Hwy 166 is also available but two lane and lots of hills.

Leave az 6 am drive 10 to 405 or 101 north. Should put you through without major traffic.

I've done all the routes when my son was at UCSB. During Friday afternoon rush hour and off hours and everything in between. 118 is decent once you get there. 405 and 101 are still your best option, unfortunately.

I would consider hwy 58 to Bako, then north a bit to hwy 46, across to paso robles then down past Pismo and along the coast to your destination. Much more enjoyable route.

Dunno, your time schedule but If you have an extra 2-3 days, you are welcome to camp on my property. Water and power available. Pine Flat lake, East of Fresno in foothills. Some really cool jeep fire roads if you want to explore a bit. Look up Big Creek trail area if interested. You can work your way from pine flat to shaver lake area , ( 1K to 5.5K elevation change). Lots to explore if you are inclined.

That looks fantastic. Looked it up and looks a bit out of the way for me right now. I appreciate the offer though. I don’t really have a timeline being retired, but starting to get cold here in Colorado so heading to warm weather for the winter. Don’t get to see daughter and grandkids much so I’ll bite the bullet if I have to but thinking about the route Chili suggested. Depends on the weather when I go. Maybe around or before Thanksgiving though.

10W to 210W to 118w which turns in to the 23S then tees right back in to 101N You’ll hit some traffic in Ventura, Santa Barbara depending on time, the view is much better.

Take the I10 to the Hohokam Expressway in Phoenix then get off at the Skyharbor exit, park on one of the outlots and take the shuttle to the terminal. Get on a Southwest flight to Santa Barbra and have your daughter come pick you up.

Going this route you could stage out of Buellton / flying flags or another campground depending on the size of the rig too, and never have to tow anywhere near LA/ So Cal . I've driven to PHX from my river house before to avoid flying out of LAX and won't drive South of Thousand Oaks unless someone dies or something --

40 to 15 to 18. 18 merges into 138. To 14 to 5 to 126 to 101. The way i go to Buelton (Flying Flags)

Definately the "lowest stress" least congested route. Not the shortest but not the longest.
The 58 adds 20 miles or so VS taking the 18 / 138 but so much smoother and a straight shot ride.
Be prepared to go 100mph on the 58 though ..... lol

The only real bummer is getting to the 126 via the 14 side of santa clarita. Cutting across santa clarita on canyon roads or surface streets suck, only alternative is to go down till you hit the 5 and then backtrack up to the 126, which isn't a big deal unless its traffic time.

This is not a bad route and good info for him. Id suggest a little different though that will avoid SCV almost all together....

BTW, not sure where you live @callbob so I just used Kingman as a 40 starting point. If you are more south in AZ, that might change things.

They stabilized lake after Labor Day at 40%. About normal for a good year. Can still get to the Second set of wires above Trimmer, no problem.

My grnadparents had a place up there for years in Lakeridge. Havent been back since they sold it probably 30+ years ago. I really want to though.

I lived in Goleta and Solvang and made the drive to the river monthly. My routs were a little different. 10-210-118-126-101, Get off the 23 as soon as the 118 makes the turn south, cut through the town and fields to end up back on the 126.

Yeah right now almost to Flagstaff on way to Alamo Lake for 4 days. Maybe Quartzsite for a few just because. Oh and a stop in Havasu after Alamo so I can grace RD with my presence. If he is not gallivanting around lol. So I might go back up to 40 to Barstow route, still have to call daughter and see what plans they have made. No hurry, I’m retired and not going back to Colorado until the snow is gone. Lots of mostly free booddocking camping from Quartzsite to Yuma by lakes and fishing. Poor people have poor ways lol.
