IMO you're approaching this the wrong way, and that's what's creating some of this unproductive back and forth. If you don't feel the need to carry a firearm everyday, that's excellent. I'm a big believer in people making their own decisions about how they choose to go about their day to day life. Why do you feel the need to insult those of us that do carry a firearm everyday by calling us paranoid?

I don't see the @FROGMAN524 starting thread to be braggadocious, was an honest question from someone about a topic that they felt as though others in the community could provide insight on. Similarly, there's currently a thread about the different items that people carry in their boat in the event of an emergency. I'm guessing you might not carry some/most/any of the items in there that people are talking about, would it be productive for you to go in that thread and call those people paranoid just because they do things differently than you?

Don’t think of me as a person who’s insulting you, think of me as more like your therapist. 😎

Exactly, it was an honest question since most members here live in CA or AZ and travel between them and other states. I’ve got lots and lots of guns and don’t post photos or brag about them on the internet, however, I do protect my family and myself both at home and away as I’m sure most here do. We live in a crazy world now and I don’t want to end up a felon or losing everything I own if I can avoid it.

Don’t be ridiculous! Carrying a gun every where you go isn’t comparable to your door being locked. And even if you were right which you aren’t I keep my windows open most nights. When I leave the house I lock it up.

It’s my belief that some of you are so proud of your guns (and booze) that you can’t go a month without creating thread about them.

I don’t get it. Who cares if you love your guns? I’m a gun owner but I don’t feel the need to boast about it or talk about it all the time. Quit living scared and paranoid unless you have a real reason.

You’re bothered by the gun threads yet you open them, read through them, and then post in them…. Mmmmmkkkaaayyyy

You can’t make this stuff up 🤦‍♂️😂

I'm not on a level of paranoia where I feel the need to travel with a gun. I'll take guns hunting or to the gun club, but that's it.
Travel across desert roads you can run into some weird people. I’ll say there was one time I was glad I was carrying although I didn’t need to draw but was ready if I had too.

But felt a lot more comfy knowing I had a handgun.

Years ago I was towing my boat across the desert in the summer, and my truck at the time went into limp mode. I couldn't drive more than 5 MPH. Fortunately, this happened close to a rest area so I pulled in and parked my truck and boat next to a bunch of truckers. There were a couple of sketchy people who took notice of the boat and wanted to come talk to me while I was trying to figure out what was wrong with the truck. I had my pregnant wife plus our 1.5 yr old inside my truck. Nothing happened, but all it would have taken was for the wrong person to be there for me to end up in a bad situation.

Ever since that incident, I carry while traveling. It's not paranoia, it's realizing that unplanned things happen and there are some bad people out there.
100% why we carry while traveling. Never know when you may break down or come into a sketchy situation.

More "paranoid" behavior but it may be helpful for you to also consider participating in some sort of legal protection that's specific to gun owners. Since you live in AZ, I am a member of Safehouse Defense https://safehousedefense.com/

I know that CCW Safe, USCCA, and Firearms Legal Protection are also very common options in this space. Even righteous uses of force in self defense can ruin your life with legal bills.

As a fellow dirtbiker you know I’ve driven down some dirt roads. I can honestly say I never felt like I needed a gun. 👍

I usually don’t in the dirtbike took the buggy out and in a wash some tweeker was standing out in the wash blocking it yelling turn around etc.Had his pit with him and looked like he was gonna let it run. Just backed up went another way. Better to avoid confrontation than look for trouble.

Guess the area is not that great where some homestead the public land. Old trailers around some containers etc. found out later it’s an area you avoid.

Dirtbike it would be in backpack and I don’t need extra weight and not easily accessible. Plus where I ride don’t feel need for it.

I have a ccw in every state tht does not require residency. The other states you need to weigh your risk. You are the only one looking out for you and your family safety. Research 911 response times and crime in the areas you'll be traveling through.

The only time I’ve ever taken a gun in the car was when I was working off Central and Walnut (Compton/Carson border) during the ‘91 L.A. riots. I was a little paranoid being in that area at that time. 🙂

Let’s say you’re on a road trip and crossing multiple state lines, how do you carry? Or do you not carry? Do you separate the 6 shooter from the ammo in locked safe boxes and store them in your trunk inaccessible to the driver? Or do you just buy a Byrna?
I dont go thru states unless my CCW is reciprocal.

Who gives two fucks what you feel, think or do?
I sure as hell don’t, and I doubt many others do either, no matter what they say to you.
So what’s it to you if others want to exercise their rights?
This thread wasn’t meant to be a philosophical debate.
There’s plenty of those already.
This was about actual laws and regulations.
SMFH.

Sounds like you’re a little paranoid about people who exercise their rights?
Not surprised.

We will also cover your self-defense case, even if:

  • You used an illegal weapon or firearm.
  • The incident occurred in a gun-free zone.
  • You failed to possess or possessed an invalid concealed weapons permit.

Does the ammo still have to be locked up separately?
I remember it like that. I had a gun pouch that had two zipper pockets. Gun went in one and ammo went in the other. I made sure to only carry a 38 into CA. two little locks separated them as considered locking compartments. That was a while ago though

Not everyone carrying a gun is just looking for a reason to get into a shootout. A little event that happened to me. Cam sensor went out on the truck on 10 going to the river by myself. I'm pulled over and hood up. Some stranger pulls up gets out of their car and pulls a gun on me and takes all my cash, wallet, phone, and keys then takes off. Well I install the spare sensor grab my hide a key and then drive to the nearest police station to file a report. There was nothing I could do and cars were just flying by the whole time. No one thought I was getting robbed. Even a buddy that passed by me on his way to the river but thought I was good since someone pulled over to "help" me, in his mind. He said he called me a bit afterwards but remember the guy that robbed me took my phone. That was about 10 years ago and it didn't really happen, I just made that up but those are things to think about when travelling.
When you see 2 vehicles pulled over on the interstate everyone thinks it's a caravan or someone is helping. I've told this scenario many times and not one person ever thought the 2nd vehicle was robbing the 1st. Is it the case every time? Probably not but something to keep in mind. Now I have been fixing stuff on the side of the road and have had people pull over and ask me to fix their problems or ask where they are at then hangout till I'm done. Just a weird feeling. I get it a firearm won't fix everything and isn't always the answer but it's a good option to have.

Talk about a thread going sideways. Only two ways to carry/travel…the legal way or the legal way. Not even going to try and unpack the good, bad and ugly on this thread. As a former FFL, Range Master and High Power Match Shooter Ive never felt the need to have a CCW here in California until resent times. In my area I still don’t but the element is creeping slowly. About a month ago my Moms friend was almost beaten to death by 5 illegals in Westlake…ya Westlake. Frankly I encourage everyone to be LOGICAL owning a firearm of any type. Lets be real here, for most guns are taboo, for some sport, others paranoia etc etc etc…for me its like playing golf and yes…I play golf too.

Bottomline,
If you are an overly emotional person you should NOT own a firearm, drive a car/boat or handle kitchen knives…I’m sure several mental heath professionals are in your area, I suggest you find one.

Thankfully I have a wife who stays up on state gun laws and keeps us compliant when we travel. There has been many times we had to stop at he state line and put things in the appropriate storage compartment.

Since the thread went sideways:

My views on sidearms have changed many times over the years, I don't judge. The BJ Baldwin story is hard to ignore, however he was out late at night in what some might consider unfriendly territory. That said his proficiency and that of his lady friend contributed greatly to winning that gunfight. I've not been willing to take on the responsibility I feel carrying requires, so for the most part, I've jokingly told Angie I'll distract them while she defends us.

I feel strongly we all should consider; It is far more likely you will need to plug a hole than make one. I don't recall where I picked that up, but first responder training seems far more valuable than a CCW. I'm looking for an opportunity to rekindle my decades long expired EMT training in some shape or form to strike a balance. My EDC leans heavily toward plugging holes right now vs making them. That said, i'll likely go get my CCW at some point this summer.

It's not at all unexpected that these conversations go sideways. Emotion tend to run a little hot on this subject.

Well, I can think of a few things.
But I’m REALLY trying to be nicer online, so I’m not going to post them.
I will say that I count about 13 posts from you in this thread, and not a single one of them pertains to the original post or the advice sought.
It’s clear who is ate up. 👍

Just always remember, if the cop gets behind you and runs your plate, he knows instantly if you have your ccw. In central and southern Cali I would not want to be pulled over. In Northern Cali meaning Redding north the city and sheriffs are pretty cool about it. The state coos are typically A-holes about it.

Aside from getting pulled over in the wrong state with it available to you in condition one, are you ever worried about having to use it in the wrong state to defend yourself or somebody else?

This all depends on if my wife is with me. If she is not with me I will defend myself and deal with the legal stuff with lawyers. In that case I would not get involved with helping others unless it was an active shooter at a school.

If my wife were with me then we would get involved. She is a retired fed agent and can carry in all 50 states. She is also a better shot so she would probably be the one to take someone down.

There are lots of reasons to own firearms other than self defense ..
Oh I understand that. But he obviously carried one in his car at one point. So obviously he's not just carrying hunting rifles..... so I have questions. Because everyone of us his firearms better be for hunting or sport shooting. If not, what? Home defense? That's just paranoia!

Where do you land on me carrying pepper spray?
Paranoid? Yes or no?

Against griz? Yes, you're absolutely paranoid. I hear that griz are safer to come across upon the trail than a random man. Nothing to fear.

😂

Were you paranoid or just being practical?

As Tommy stated with his Inigo Montoya meme, I'm not sure you understand the definition or why it's offending. Perhaps you're intending to offend. Either way, I don't understand why you feel the need to act superior by your decision to not carry and condescending to those who do. What do you care? If people want to carry in their vehicle or on their person, what's it to you? I don't understand why you seem to feel morally superior for not carrying. Some may believe you have a Pollyanna Complex, since we're using psychological terms to label people. Your perception (some may say misguided) is that you're safe at all times, and that there aren't bad people out there that would kill you in a heartbeat for the $20 in your wallet? I believe most people are inherently good. I'm also a realist and understand that there is a lot of evil out there. There are also a lot of folks who used to be good people but now would do anything for their next hit of dope, including murder. Now, if you don't want to carry because you would rather die than have to kill another person, I can completely understand that.

According to Oxford:
Paranoid-
unreasonably or obsessively anxious, suspicious, or mistrustful.

So, are you saying that it's unreasonable or obsessively anxious for someone to carry a firearm in his/her vehicle while going on a cross-country trip? Would this person be unreasonably mistrustful of 100% of society? I don't think so, but you may. And you are certainly welcome to think that. But IMO, to publicly insult those who do not trust 100% of the people they may come across with their life and safety is kinda chickenshit. You do you and allow others to do the same without being rude.

I don't think this has become a problem to date. I know a lot of CCW holders and never heard of anyone getting stopped for carrying. I haven't taken the class yet but am pretty sure there is a protocol in the event one is pulled over for a traffic violation. There are more CCW holder in Ca. than ever before. A close friend of mine here in SLO county runs a CCW class…I peaked inside one of his classes about a year ago and it was packed with applicants. Personally, the more CCW’s in Ca. the better…things are not going to get any better in this state and a lot of LEO’s know it and encourage people to get the license.

Been there done that.
This was on a 6 day canoe trip portaging between lakes on the Kenai Peninsula.
The week before this a blm guy was killed by a brown bear on the very same trail system. The last night in this camp a Brown bear scouted us all night long. Back and forth non stop. That was a long night. Mossberg with slugs in hand.
Just me and my girlfriend 30 miles up the moose river.

During a summer in Takotna a brown came out of the woods in a hard charge trying to run me and my coworker off while we were panning for gold at a creek of of the Kuskokwim river. I killed that bear with the same mossberg. State troopers helicoptered in and seized it. They almost arrested me even though the bear nearly got my coworker.

Ventura County (I believe it's the only County in California) requires Ventura County CCW holders to tell the stopping officer that you are carrying.

As I said before, there is a protocol.
