I loved his columns in the MC magazines. I had the pleasure of meeting him a hand full of times when I worked at off-road.com.

Years ago we used to go to Indian Dunes during the week to go dirt bike riding. Rick and the Dirt Bike crew would be testing new bikes or some new trick product. We would park close to them as there was not many people riding during the week. Rick was always calling us over to look at the new bikes and ask our opinion on new bikes and products. He was a funny and very outgoing guy and of course he was bigger than life to us! I couldn't wait for the monthly Dirt Bike magazine to show up and the first thing I read was Ricks In the saddle colum. A group of friends and I rode the first Barstow to Vegas protest ride that Rick and his friend Louis McKay, the Phantom Duck of the Desert put on as a protest ride for the BLM canceling the famous Barstow to Vegas desert races. Rick was very active in keeping desert racing and riding open. I was thinking about Rick a couple of weeks ago and then I read that he had passed. Godspeed Rick, I'm glad we crossed paths a few times, you were a role model and inspiration to many people!

Another fucking reminder that I am getting older by the minute.

Like others here, as a kid I couldn't wait to get the latest issue of Dirt Bike magazine and then read it cover to cover. At the time it was the ONLY source of honest reporting and reviews of new bikes and gear which often put the editors at odds with their advertisers and princiiple source of revenue. In the end it made the bikes and gear better while providing ridiculously funny entertainment to an army of dirt junkies like me.

I stumbled across the Rick at a Motorcycle show (Anaheim maybe?) in the mid 90's and bought a copy of Monkey Butt. Maybe time for a re-read.

Godspeed Super Hunky.

No, no, no, not Super Hunkey! Sorry to hear that. Also loved reading Dirt Bike. Remember Mr. Know It All? Classic stuff. Poor stiffs would send in questions and Mr. Know It All would insult the shit out of the writer, “Really, you should have known better,” being a well used response😀

Exactly!
You will not find reading material of that quality on today's Interweb.

Reading every magazine I could lay my hands on when I was 14-18 was why I aspired to be a staff writer for a dirt bike mag. I knew it would be the perfect career for me. I enjoy writing, and could do it well at an early age. Super Hunky wrote a column one month about rolling out to the hills, staked out a course with ribbons on virgin hills, and then proceeded to rip it up with his buddies. At the end, he cops to how much fun it is to moto on a golf course.
I had that exact dream the week before I read his column.
I tried to get hired but I couldn't afford to move to L.A.
3 years later I did a 14 month internship with Hot Boat. Almost as much fun as working with bikes. Got a few things published. Had some adventures with Chris. Got to play with some very cool towables, and a few dangerous ones. But I quickly realized that even the publisher/owner wasn't making much money at all. 1988 and print media is dying rapidly due to the internet.
Sweet dreams were made of this . . .
