Dennis Carl Wilson, left us 41 Years ago today. He was the Drummer and a founding member of the Famous California Group "The Beach Boys" The group was known for the "Surfer" Sound and Dennis was the only true surfer of the group. Dennis wrote the Hit Song "You Are So Beautiful" for Joe Cocker and worked on Billy Preston's albums. The last days were lived homeless and a Nomadic lifestyle and ended with an intoxicated attempt to retrieve personal items that he had thrown overboard from his yacht three years earlier. President Raegan intervened and made a Presidential Exception to allow him to be buried at sea without being "Cremated" first. Only Navy personnel and the U.S. Coast Guard are the only ones allowed to be buried at sea unless first Cremated.

RIP!! remembering you from the Happy Carefree, Never Ending Summer and Songs of the "Beach Boys.✌️

Dennis, Carl, and Brian Wilson, plus Al Jardine and David Marks, all went to my High School. We lived round the corner from them, growing up, and would often go over to listen to them practice. This was in an era when "garage bands" were all over the place, so it wasn't unusual. They also played at one of our proms.

Dennis was the only one on the Beach Boys that surfed, and was also an excellent swimmer. While the official cause of death was listed as "accidental drowning", alcohol impairment would have played a key role. His BAC was .26%, according to the autopsy. With extreme alcohol intoxication, one of the things that the alcohol affects is the inner ear, which controls balance, coordination, and spacial orientation. This is especially critical when in, and especially under, water. What happens is, you can't determine which way is up and which way is down. You might think you're swimming to the surface, but hit the bottom instead.

Definitely gone much too young, much like Carl. While pretty much all the boys did their fair share of drugs, Dennis kinda took it to another level. None of us would ever have thought that Brian would be the last Wilson alive.

I’m expecting a post from @Willie B , He’s always got good stuff
… I haven’t got much on Dennis Wilson… as I was never around the Beach Boys… although… I think someone once took me to where he dove in and did not come back up… can’t remember the exact circumstances of that🤷🏽‍♀️

… My only real commonality with Dennis Wilson was that Manson and his band of girls took over Dennis’s house… I think it was in Palos Verdes…
…The pieces of the puzzle of possibly Manson and Tex Watkins trying to enter into our little oasis…our house in Malibu with the indoor pool….It is possible that I threw Manson and Tex Watkins out of our driveway… I have no concrete proof🤷🏽‍♀…long story… Timewise it would’ve been after I knocked Manson across the dancefloor up at the Topanga Canyon Corall…the nightclub, and beer bar🤷🏽‍♀️

Love the Beach Boys but Dennis did not write "You are so Beautiful'. Billy Preston and his writing partner did. It's always been a rumor that Dennis was involved, someone saw Preston and Wilson sitting at a piano working on a tune at a party, but never confirmed. His name's not on it and he never received royalties.

It's amazing just how long ago he died, hard to believe that much time has passed. Gone longer than he lived.

Still have my copy of "Pacific Ocean Blue", only album of his released when he was alive.

Some of y'all might not know it, but there's an Historical Marker/Monument to the Beach Boys, at the site of their old home in Hawthorne. (3701 W. 119th Street, Hawthorne, CA) Well, CLOSE to the old home, since it's now covered by the 105/Century freeway.

No intent to thread jack, but intact, non cremated, human remains can be buried at sea. I’ve done it. There are regulations which must be followed.

Dennis Wilson was a unique drummer, in some ways. He used a right handed drum kit, but played it left handed. His short drum rolls were actually a single handed ruff, also known as a drag. The vast majority of Beach Boy recordings had the excellent studio musician, Hal Blaine, on drums. Hal and Brian Wilson were a solid team.

Saw them with Brian and with ( I think) John Stamos? Also saw the Brian Wilson band at a Peterson dinner event. Although he could not play beach boys songs, I was surprised they were really good.
Still cruise PCH with the top down to The Beach Boys. 🏄 🏄‍♂️ 🌴

Dennis was probably the worst rock and roll drummer of all time. If you watch a few films of the early days of the Beach Boys, it's painfully obvious.

Hal Blaine, on the other hand, was amazingly skilled, and played the drums on hundreds of 60s and 70s records. He is one of the most talented yet least known session musicians of the early rock era. His work, along with the rest of the Wrecking Crew, appeared on almost every hit record recorded in LA during that time.

Blaine played the drums on more than forty number one pop and rock songs.

All the surf guitar, like on Surfin' USA, was recorded by Glen Campbell, another member of the Wrecking Crew, who taught the "surf twang" method to Carl, so he could do it live.
