His work is littered with hit after hit after hit.

It's difficult to pick a favorite album let alone a fav song.

I mean, if you don't at least have super unknown, A sides, and down on the upside there is something wrong with you.

After listening all day to his work I have confirmed what I have always thought.
"Tighter and tighter" is my favorite...probably...maybe...??

Wait, it might be blow up the outside world...or tried to live...or...damn, I give up.

I woke up to this news this morning, and living in Seattle it made the local news. This morning they mentioned it may have been suicide, was confirmed later in the day. I was not a huge fan of grunge music, but loved this guys voice. On my way home from work tonight I was listening to a local conservative talk show host, he seems to be in his mid 30's. He was devastated, and struggled with the suicide aspect. I was drawn to how he tried to deal with Chris taking his life. Ultimately, he made a poor, selfish decision to end his life, but it was just that. A bad decision. Chris had struggled with depression all of his life and had told people that if he wasn't a musician he would have been a hermit. Chris was a introvert in every sense of the meaning. The other thing that was a local topic today was how many of the local guys that created grunge music have committed suicide. I guess it's befitting of the music they performed.

It sucks that he will not be with us anymore.

Would be interesting to show how many of the Grunge era founders have taken their lives in one way or another. Like I said, the young right wing talk show host I listened to tonight named all of the Seattle based musicians that formed the grunge deal in the mid 80's to late 90's, most of the front men have offed themselves. Eddy Vedder seems to be the last guy standing. He also said he stumbled in to a bar back in the mid 80's and watched the " shemps" perform and said it was like watching Led Zepplin. He said when Chris Cornell walked on stage he looked like a rock star and during the performance it was obvious this guy was going to be some one.

This talk show host framed this sad ending perfectly. His father had committed suicide. He said depression is a monster that wants to be alone with you, then it kills you. He talked about how he had witnessed people that truly struggled with depression (isolation from society) but could sack up and perform in front of hundreds or thousands, appear normal then go back to isolation and crave the isolation. Kinda hit home for me when he put it that way. My dad is that way and I am also. I am to stubborn to off myself, but I am concerned about my dad.

I always enjoy reading your posts. Sounds like you are in control of your quandary and have a conduit for expressing yourself; so whatever you are doing, keep it up. :)

I can't imagine living alone in one's own mind. Several years back, I learned there is no way a person not suffering from depression can truly understand or relate to its grip. It makes me me sad for anybody in that situation. And, despite the pain it causes, I am at peace with people who check themselves out. Still saddens me, though.:( Keep a close eye on your pops (I'm sure you do).

Don't forget what the whole Temple of the Dog thing is all about.......if you're an OG of the era, you'll know..........Andrew Wood. If you don't know, do yourself a favor and look up Mother Lover Bone....aka Pearl Jam before the weenie Eddie Vedder showed up. :D

Didn't know that, thanks.

I was never into the "grunge" genre.

My thoughts are...Cornell was best with Audioslave, Weiland with Velvet Revolver, Grohl with Foo Fighters, and Courtney after she stole Cobain's music. :p The exception being Staley and AIC, they were the best of that era.

The grunge era brought a ton of baggage with it...misery, hard dope is cool, selfishness, disrespect and no self-respect, settling for less is okay, and and overall blah filled void. Then, Fred Durst was the icing on the cake, adding bad tattoos, baggy pants and lifted trucks to the mix; thus closing out a mediocre filled decade.

Damn I'm glad I grew up in the 80's :thumbsup :eek

Definitely my favorite singer / songwriter as well. A lot of his stuff comes from a dark place. Personally, I think he's fought depression his entire life. Sad to lose him, but I'm glad he did what he did while he was here. I hope his family can forgive him.

Another genX'r would be Shannon Hoon from Blind Melon. Not grunge, but alternative and of the time. Their song "Galaxie" was pretty awesome.

I remember that cat, Myles Kennedy reminds me of him. I think Axel gave him a break into the biz?

Saw them at the Pacific Amphitheater with Social D and Neil Young. Damn that was a great concert --but not loud enough!

Agreed. When I posted "Say Hello To Heaven" I was thinking of how things have gone full circle and the meaning behind their song to Wood. That song/album was pivotal to the success of so many of the musicians in Seattle.

All I know is at Lollapalooza 1996 at Irvine Meadows when Soundgarden played the lawn section was ablaze with fires, the smoke from weed was thick and it was nearly one big mosh pit. They kicked ass. What a shock and loss. My favorite song was Flower from Soundgarden's debute album Ultramega OK.

Lol, I can rant online or in person with the best, never said I was perfect. To be honest, that's just how I release the anxiety from my job. I'm an introvert, that just so happens to be good at an extroverts job and the most important thing I do is communicate with people, every minute of everyday. Those people might be owners of fortune 500 companies, architects, engineers, building officials / inspectors, owners of the company I work for, not to mention the dozens of people that work directly for me. It's not uncommon for me to get 150 emails, 75-100 phone calls and a line of people at my office door everyday. Not an excuse, just my reality. That's what you do when your are a husband and father, grab that big brass wring / anchor and do everything you can to provide for your family. As I get older, I find that I can channel the stress release by making people laugh during the day. I'm the funniest fucking guy people close to me at work know.

Eddy Vedder doesnt have the range, but is an above average rock lead man as well. One of my favorite songs by EV -

In my opinion Chris Cornell and Soungarden aren't even in the same league as Eddy Vedder an Pearl Jam. I was like Chris who?

I agree that Pearl Jam was a bigger, better, group with more hits than Soundgarden. But Eddy Vedder is a Putz and nowhere near the vocalist that Chris was.

I don't and didn't really like Soundgarden back in the day. They were number 3 behind Nirvana & Pearl Jam. The only song I really like is Outshined.

But move on to Temple of the Dog, and then Audioslave and I became a Chris Cornell Fan. (Especially Audioslave).

Although I've been listening to his music for years, I don't think I've seen any of their videos. After watching that one, led me to this one for Show Me How to Live and how they incorporated Vanishing Point into the video. Pretty frikkin cool, love that movie. Have to say, seeing news of his passing was a shocker this morning. RIP Chris Cornell... :(

So, I have never heard this song before you posted the video. When you posted it, I was like Meh...It's ok, but nothing great. It has since grown on me and I love it. I have listened to it every day since you posted it :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

His last new song

I hate to say it, but I'm right there with you on that. I hadn't heard the new song until now, and appreciate the link.

Here's a more obscure one from the Audioslave days that I'd play a lot, but unfortunately tells much about its author.

You guys following any of the tributes?

Ann Wilson did this one the next day after his death. Like many, she had to use sheet music, and or learn the song.

Yeah, I am a Pearl Jam fan, but seriously, Vedder plays the part of rock star...Cornell opitimized it.
When you dig through the separate catalogues of each, it becomes clear that Cornell was the real deal...almost tortured in his art. Vedder spent nearly as much time arguing with Ticketmaster as he did writing songs.

"Black" is as close as Pearl Jam comes to matching Cornell...IMO

Ok course, it's all subjective and everyone has different tastes, so it's not my intention to diminish Pearl Jam's successes. But I just don't see how the two are even in the same league.

Having said that, I can count as many Pearl Jam discs in my collection as I can Soundgarden discs.
But Cornells work goes way beyond Soundgarden.

im seeing LIVE this summer in September, looking forward to it

I don't think Cornel is 1000X better than Eddie, better yes. But not the same vocal style so its not apples to apples. Listen to Pearl jams new album for awhile, it shows his range beyond 'black'

Great tributes

I read the news on his death and call from his wife to his body guard. They missed saving him by minutes, sad. Body guard kicked open the hotel door, that's a massive kick

When I say "rockstar", I'm talking about the package as a whole. Cornell had it all - great showmanship, nice guy, good looks, beautiful family, and clearly he loved performing as he did tons of it. I like Vedder and PJ as much as anybody else, but he's not a rockstar at Cornell's level.

Who would you rather hang out with?

Case closed :D

I'll take some crap for this but...I know of what I speak...
With an addict, you never know what you are getting
Is it the "clean and sober" person
Is it the "I am telling you I am clean and sober" person
Is it the "I have my problem under control" person
Is it the "manipulative, I'll do anything for the next fix" person

1 year or 10 years clean, heroin and opioid based addiction is pure evil and it destroys from the inside.

RIP
