Representative: Rocker Chris Cornell has died at age 52

According to his representative, rocker Chris Cornell, who gained fame as the lead singer of Soundgarden and later Audioslave, has died at age 52.

In a statement to The Associated Press, Brian Bumbery says Cornell died Wednesday night in Detroit.

Bumbery called the death "sudden and unexpected" and said his wife and family were shocked by it. The statement said the family would be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause and asked for privacy.

As the lead singer for Seattle-based Soundgarden, Cornell helped architect the 90's grunge rock movement. He was also a Grammy award-winning, Golden Globe nominated singer, songwriter, guitarist, composer and lyricist.

In addition, Cornell became involved in philanthropy and started the Chris and Vicky Cornell Foundation to support children facing challenges, including homelessness, poverty, abuse and neglect.

Heard about it late last night. Sucks.....he was one of my favs. Never got a chance to see him perform though. I don't know why. Saw even other band back in the day. Really wanted to go to the Temple of the Dog show this past year too but missed it. RIP man. Such a great artist.

Rest peacefully Mr. Cornell. You made and impact in many people's lives through music and lyrics.
He was at the pinnacle of the very large list of phenomenal singers.

How about a moment of music...

I agree. He made any song he sang great. My favorite is Like A Stone - Audioslave.

Yup, I'll never forget cruising along in the car with my (then) 2 year old in her car seat. I was listening to Audioslave (as I often would), and heard her making some noise. I turned down the music and realized she was singing along to the song...to Like a Stone.

My kid loved it also. It speaks to your soul, and Chris' voice makes the song.

My top 3 favorites are (in Order)

1: Like a Stone
2: Outshined
3: Say Hello 2 Heaven

Although I've been listening to his music for years, I don't think I've seen any of their videos. After watching that one, led me to this one for Show Me How to Live and how they incorporated Vanishing Point into the video. Pretty frikkin cool, love that movie. Have to say, seeing news of his passing was a shocker this morning. RIP Chris Cornell... :(

I'm so bummed, even more so that it appears to be a suicide. :( I was lucky enough to see him very early on, they opened up for Metallica. Man this bums me out. My favorite:

Wow, suicide, I hadn't heard that yet. Makes the ending to that video I posted seem a little eery, seeing as how he kills himself (and the band) at the end by crashing into the bulldozers as in the movie....

In 1987 or 88, they played a freebie at Pitzer College as I was delivering sushi to the dorms that night. I didn't go back to work that night. RIP Chris Cornell.

I only saw Soundgarden once at a music festival in Denmark in the 90's. Never saw any of his other groups. :thumbsdown

He was always my favorite vocalist, the only one I ever bring up to compete for second to Freddie Mercury when those arguments start at the bar :) The audioslave songs on the Collateral soundtrack heighten those scenes so much as well. I have so many favorites like all of you from Sound Garden, his solo work, and Audioslave, but these ironically are the ones I am thinking of today, some of his covers I have been playing on youtube in the headphones at work the past few months. Such an amazing voice, and one of the rare times I like someone making another's song their own.

and finally, a crazy talent of combining the lyrics of Metallica's "One" over the music and melody of U2's "One". This is actually a little haunting considering he just died.

Looks like he hung himself. Such an incredible talent. I know he battled depression for years. Hopefully he has found some peace. RIP

it amazes me the demons these rockers and artists deal with. they have no idea how special they are and how much we truly enjoy their work. think of all the suicides or overdoses from some of these guys and gals....can you imagine how much more music they could have given to the people and how much more we would love them......if they only knew
