On our way home this morning pulling into Vidal CHP goes flying by. Asked the guy at the Agricultural station and he said there was a roll over somewhere on Rice Rd. We ended up going through Blythe to miss the traffic.

Hope everyone is alright

What time was that, curious if it's clear now?

We rolled through Vidal about 9:15...saw a fire truck pulling into vidal off of rice road as we pulled out. Nick (CHP) was hanging out near the rolled car waiting for a tow truck....no other emergency vehicles nearby, so must not have been any major injuries. About 8 miles later I saw a lexus SUV with the front wheels buried in the soft shoulder, I was gonna turn back but realized I didn't have any recovery gear with me and a couple of tie downs probably wouldn't have got the job done....I texted Nick about it and carried on. No traffic backup because of the rollover. Still a few idiots pulling out 2-3 up to pass. I just hit the brakes when I see that shit.

when people dont pass and it stacks up you are forced to pass 2-3 at a time or more. I have passed 17 in one shot because people are too scared to pass. By the time i reached the front car i was doing well over 120. that is when its dangerous because people are too chicken shit to pass. take the 40 if you cant pass

I'm not talking about passing 10 cars at a time, I'm talking about 3 cars passing at a time...the back 2 can't see what's in front of the 1st one. As soon as the 1st one tucks back in just in time, the other 2 are dead. I don't want to be anywhere near that shit.

This was the incident today. These shots came from around 9am. I was told an ambulance was seen (leaving I believe).

We rolled through about an hour later and they had gotten it off the road and were working on getting it on a flatbed.

No details on how it happened that I have seen.

Your last post made me remember a time I was towing the boat with mommas 96 4 runner and there was a military convoy pulling out at the stop sign…we waited about 15 minutes for all of ‘em to come through (they weren’t stopping). Then proceeded to run about 25mph down the road. I don’t have the patience for that…and we were in a decent spot for visibility and saw nothing coming the other way (even had the wife dig out the binoculars…because this was gonna be a good trick)…I had that 190hp V6 spinning about 5500rpms in 3rd by the time we got to front of the line…lol

For me depends on situation towing not towing. Towing and they are are 60-65 I may just float back especially if 3 or more cars in front of me.

If not towing o will atttempt
To pass but again if the line is long with cars I ain’t going to gain anything so I chose not to take the risk. 78 from just out of Brawley to glamis is same thing but it’s only a 15 min drive then so I just say fuck it. And I see 2 lane rd a little different after being within a 100 ft of a head on on that stretch of 78 near dunes edge.luckily guy passing coming opposite direction of me decided to veer off into the shoulder vs taking me and family out. He ended up in the ditch I never stopped or I would have killed him.

Driving on two lane highways and passing cars was common fifty years ago. Today's drivers don't have a clue how to do it.

CHP was rolling up when we got there. Ambulance was there, Fire truck (from Havasu Landing) was just leaving. There was somebody sitting on side step of the ambulance being tended to, I'm assuming the driver, no one tending to him looking to be rushing, so I'm assuming no major injuries. Tire marks on the road made it look like car was heading east bound, drifted off the road on the curve, over corrected, came across the road, hit the berm and rolled several times. This was a little before 9AM.

When my Dad married my step mother we started going to her condo in Mammoth, CA when I was like maybe 10 years old.

It was an entire trip of my Dad passing as HWY 395 was not as it is today. He used to joke about pee breaks telling everyone to hurry up so he doesn't have to pass the slowpokes again.

About 10 years ago we came up on a horrible accident on Rice Rd. We both said we have seen way too many accidents on this road and decided never to take Rice Road again.
Seems like a weekly wreck currently.:(

Smart.

Years ago there were wrecks on that road. Now days with all the various media, more people know it right away. There were two bad ones Sunday the 11th. I had a guy bringing a boat out for me to look at that morning, he sent me a photo of the helicopter in the middle of the highway saying he was going to be a bit late. Later that same day a van rolled over and ejected people, heard that one was very bad.

Rice Rd has gotten small for the speed of todays cars and volume has increased. I have seen cars passing a line of cars at 100 mph right through a double line. Not good!

FWIW, wife’s sister has been ticketed twice by CHP on Rice for doing 80 while passing.

So CA is adding another 2 lane road on the 10 from Blythe to Indio, but can't put a couple passing lanes on Rice Road to save a few more lives....

This is to get more people into the state. California does not care about the people already in the state having fun..... Boating people are MAGA people and are bad.........

I can tell you it’s not a good idea to speed specifically while passing in the few areas you are allowed to between Parker and Videl. And don’t do it twice. I now have radar detectors in every vehicle. They work unless CHP is stationary and using laser radar. Then you are fucked 👍🏻

Meh, I'd rather be safe with a ticket than dead from attempting to pass while staying under the speed limit spending excessive time playing chicken with oncoming traffic.

Of course. The speed limit is the speed limit even when passing. Now following that will get you killed if you attempt a pass so basically anyone passing is forced to speed to accomplish the pass.

doesn't surprise me much.

was rolling home last night, around 7pm, some dude in a black lifted (like 10" w/ 37's) Chevy blew by me about 90, i had the cruise set at 75. He almost swapped ends as he came back into my lane, i heard the tires screech in my cab w/ the windows up. A little less attention and it would have ended up in a slide or a roll easy.

This Rice RD must be a wonderful, very scenic drive? Since it's only about 12 miles shorter than the alternative via Ehrenberg. Rice RD - The home of Darwin's Law. But unfortunately, also the innocent victims . . . . . .

Drove rice pulling 20k GVW fifth wheel Sunday, never seen so many Ca. bound on Rice. Rd. Must have been 500 between Hwy 10 and Vidal. Silly passers the whole way. Came back that way around 11:00 am Monday, big groups 15-30 cars, truck pulling boats and motorhomes running 63-65, there were a few passing multiples running out of space and sneaking back in line. Patience? I have very little, but to endanger everyone around us to save 5 minutes? Some bonehead passes me at 120, better hope you don't run out of talent wad up and expect help form me. Chill and enjoy the ride.

12 miles but 30 minutes and potentially another “I have to pee” or “I feel carsick” and for sure another 15+ “are we there yets.”

Ehrenberg has speed changes and speed traps with CRIT cops. The worst accident I have witnessed out there was actually on the reservation going that route because Rice was closed. Pick your battles.

That's why everyone should just go to Quartzite, and let us cruisers deal with Ehrenburg.😁

Last really nasty one we saw on that road ended our 15 years using it as our regular river route. Been 10 years now and every now and then I'll ask if she'd like to go that way for a change --- nope, sez she'd rather cope with the asshole truckers and stay on 10.

We drove home via rice yesterday. My wife drove the whole way home. She was passing people left and right. I told her if your gonna pass floor it and let her rip. Don’t pass them slowly.

Took rice road out Thursday and had to pull into the dirt because some a hole was trying to pass on a curve. Didn’t want to wait to see if he’d get back to his side with my whole family in the car. He did but better to be safe. Came home rice road on Monday with no issues but did see a Prius on a flatbed heading to Parker that looked like it and rolled a couple times.
