A header w/a truck/rv combo and a malibu??? That sounds rather lethal...
I hope they all manage to survive and heal..

The two scenarios I can think of are 1) the car miscalculated the closing rate of the oncoming truck/rv while trying to pass and lost the game of chicken. Or 2) the truck /rv was trying to pass and couldn’t get back in the lane in time.

Rather than build a train to nowhere I wish they’d either build another two lanes on this highway (and make it divided) or at least put in regular passing lanes.

I’m always planning an escape route when passing is happening in front of me and coming at me.

Yep, always have to be defensive out there. I typically anticipate braking to give more room and I lift off the throttle if in traffic when some genious decides he has to pass. On my last return trip from Big River I had to pull half way out of my lane before vidal j. because some shit stain in a minivan decided to pass a big rig headed E. I was so pissed I envisioned him trying to out run a full clip from my 9mm...

1 DOA, 2 immediate, 1 delayed is what it looks like.
I want to, once again, remind people that help is a ways out (30 + minutes). Drive safe! There was a Fire captain and nurse onscene too. Hard to do much with out the proper tools and equipment. It sounded like they relayed info and got an airship started and got someone out if the truck.

Well all have that curiosity to know and understand these types of things but At the end of the day does it make any difference who was at fault, how it happened etc. Sadly, It's done. Those lives are no more and the lives of the friends and families of those involved are changed forever. What a horrible way to go. Imagine the horror they all felt when they realized what was about to occur and then BAM it happened. Imagine witnessing it and not being able to stop it, unsee it or be able to help the victims in any significant way...
That's some real bad shit right there...
May they all rest in peace.

I was once a victim, in the passenger seat, of a headon collision. On PCH in Malibu, raining, we were southbound doing about 40-45. Northbound small Toyota pickup, going about 60+, hydroplanes and comes straight into us. Combined speeds, at contact, about 100 mph. Although, it did seem to happen in slow motion. Lap/shoulder restraint likely saved my life. I fully expected to be thrown through the windshield. Can recall my face being forced against it. Force of the restraint against my chest broke my sternum. Hurt like hell. But miraculously, that was my only injury. Our driver had an air bag, he was shaken but otherwise OK. Driver of the oncoming Toyota broke both arms and both legs. CHP later said the wet road caused the accident, but may also saved all of our lives.

The cause of yesterday's fatal accident? That will be worthwhile info. No, it's not going to bring anyone back. But, it just might make others think twice and/or rethink their driving. Particularly when on Rice RD.

My only interest in the details of the incident is purely to highten my awareness of a certain area of that road to keep that in mind when I go through there again so that I can pre plan my options should I encounter something similar.

For example, between Vidal and Parker some idiot tried to pass a semi not only on a double yellow, but as they were cresting a hill. I came over the hill going the opposite way only to be presented with said idiot coming at me in my lane. I slammed the brakes and dove for the shoulder and the dolt went between me and the semi he was passing. Consequently when I drive that section now I slow way down cresting the hills and cheat over to the right edge of the road just in case. Never want that again.

So for me I just want to consider all possibilities on that road. I want to get where I’m going, and not be a statistic.

Is it me or does it always seems to be that you have on coming traffic at every turn on Rice Road?

It really doesn’t matter. At the end of the day, you can’t change peoples’ minds. And that’s ok, we’re all responsible for our own decisions.

Personally though, I won’t take that road aside from my 40 hours a week on it, and I tell everyone I care about to avoid it as well. Will you have an issue? Odds are you wont. It’s never a problem, until it is.

We take Rice 99% of the time and have had some close calls over the last 25 years. You have to drive that road like a Boss and expect to be run off the road at some point in time. Thus far, we've managed to make it there and back without issue, thank God.

Would also help if some people weren’t a-holes when you pass them. I’ve had people speed up and box me out of the spot in front of them I was going for when I’m trying to work my way up a line of cars. I don’t get how they want you to get in a crash. Either I have to go further up the line (if possible) or drop back to my original spot.

Back when I was 1/2 my age & someone had done that to Me, I seriously would've gone way out of my way to follow a person like that till they got out of their car.
I guess I'm glad that I'm old now . . .LOL.

I well recall my Dad would, at times, speed up like that if a car was trying to pass him, as we were driving home from our mountain cabin via old Brea Canyon Rd. He, my Dad, had a car full of his kids and wife. 100% dumb shit thing to do, by my Dad.

So this thread title is somewhat misleading, I was thinking it meant River Road cutoff on the 40 to head to Laughlin. Anyway here is some of the aftermath from this accident. According to the woman driving the truck with the toy hauler in tow, the car in front of her pull towards the shoulder then flipped a u turn right in front of her without looking.

So not a head on but more of a t-bone?

And assuming all the fatalities were in the car and not in the truck? Sounds like female driver was alive to give a statement.

From what im hearing, Yes, she's going to be ok, a few broken bones. The husband is sedated having several surgeries, but his vitals are all good.

Another pic I found on FB. Sounds to be Guiboa's parents. Not sure how one survives this but sure glad they did.

From the post -
I haven’t put much of anything on my personal page, wanted to give an Update on my parents Sal and Kelly as I have many reaching out. they were both life flown after their head on collision cause by a sedan that veered in front of them. We are not ignoring calls and messages, Hunter and I are just unable to answer them.
Dad is progressing, he is on his 4th surgery with more to come and a long road to recovery. He has been sedated since the accident on Saturday. Today we got to see him at least partically responsive. Briefly had his eyes open, holding hands, nodding and moving hands/fingers. Was great to have that moment today, even briefly. Really brought light to the situation. they are working toward pulling the breathing machine and lowering sedation to see how he does on his own.
Mom had her surgery yesterday and check up today. Doctors are confident she may not need a second surgery.
🤞

Thank you to each and every one of you for the overwhelming prayers and support that has come through. Still a miracle they even made it out. Mangled, upside down and on fire that stayed brave and kept a level head.

Yep.. I should have put Rice Road…it’s miss leading…. I will see if I can change it. Good catch, and thanks for the update.
