SummitKarl's thread and the subsequent replies made me realize that there are more people in here than I realized (I shoulda known better) that are familiar with REVIT. I am now drawing a lot of our work in 3D but am just using AutoCAD with Duct Designer 3D plug-in (At least I'm on the 2020 edition of both). I talked to a couple of the GC's that we typically work for and they have said they have seen an uptick in clients requesting BIM capable contractors be used. So my boss and I were talking and have decided it would be a good idea to start looking into getting into that realm as well as there are only 2 other contractors in the city that offer that capability and they both have their different negatives about them as well. The biggest problem though is, I have never used REVIT. I thought myself AutoCAD, including the 3D aspect of it so I know I'm barely into the program's capabilities, but since REVIT drawings and AutoCAD drawings do not easily interchange, I need to get familiar with REVIT to be able to be successful with BIM projects.

Anybody have any suggestions for learning REVIT with all that in mind? Keep in mind that I work 50+ hours a week and have 4 kids at home all under 7 so life is a bit hectic and outside learning opportunities are far and few between.

(A current project that I have drawn in AutoCAD 3D, including all the structural steel, TJI's, etc. from the erection drawings. Was field verified to be within an inch, so damn good enough for what we do.)

My son proficient in Revit in fact he chuckles at me when I use CADD. I am old and slow. LOL Revit is his go to and CADD is his last resort if using certain file types. He spent years in school on the program for his degree. I’d be happy to connect the two of you is you’d like. He is also able do renderings and did our RV garage drawings. Another idea that might be more beneficial could be to sub out the work for the projects that come up from time to time. That way you have immediate ability to do the work and add to your workload.

you might want to look into MiTek structure as it's for the most part the industry standard for truss designers and works well with autocad
