Retired from a life of about 52 years in auto repair , had to , body was aching big time . Best part about being retired is not having to get up in morning , I have always been self employed. And not having to deal with people anymore , priceless ! You will find numerous things to keep busy , or you can sometimes just do nothing !

Most of you are going to think I’m crazy, started my career in construction 1969, Operating Engineer Local 12 apprentice. After a few years found myself in supervisory positions with Home Builders, Land Development a part of the business that can be very good or brutal.
So retirement, just told my boss after New Years I’m done end of March, I’ll be 74 in February!! I’m going to miss driving or walking a site and the interfacing with the younger guys, and talk to any and all Foremen to the lowest laborer on the job.

I love your last sentence, that was me in 2011, I still miss that a bit.

3 years 4 months ago at 55 after 34 years at Unisource energy. Wanted to go till 59-1/2 But the new POS CEO (on the 3rd day of her new appointment) and her new VP of operations pulled my plug. The CEO was my peer and the VP my subordinate at one time. Quite the turn of events towards the end however life goes on.

Like a couple of others, my hand is on the pin. I was supposed to retire 3 years ago with the hubbie when we were both 52. As luck would have it, my boss retired the same day as my husband, so they offered me her job which was a nice pay and pension bump. Figured I would stay a year, then go but that has turned into 3 years. I will be 55 in a few weeks, I had told mgmt several months ago that I was retiring the day after. They asked me to stay on a bit longer in order to recruit to fill my spot. I negotiated and told them two more months ONLY if I could work 2 days a week. That actually works better for me to burn some of my vacation leave as to avoid the big tax hit since I can't dump all of that payout into my retirement account. They agreed, so looks like I am in until mid April. 32 years is long enough in the civilian LE business, and while I still enjoy the work itself, the environment it isn't so much fun anymore. I have already been offered private sector work, which I am probably not going to take but it is nice knowing I have a fall back plan if the retirement thing doesn't work out so well for me (need money or just bored). Can't wait to not wake up to an alarm at 0445 hours everyday!!

We want to go on road trips, visiting various friends throughout the country and enjoy life while we can get around pretty well and do things. Hubbie makes the same if not more in retirement, no kids, no big toys, and we were never big spenders to begin with so we are doing just fine. Hubbie basically works full time as a volunteer with a disaster relief organization and I will do more of that when I have more free time as well.

I unintentionally retired at 41. I never realized the value of a retirement plan when I started.... I just wanted to do the job.

It took me almost 6 months to even realize I was retired I was so busy with life, specifically aging parents health issues, outside of work.

Definitely not the plan but at 22 I decided to lived a very fiscally conservative life and made smart low risk investments so at 42 I may not be able to buy a new DCB every year but I'm retired.

I have played the short game well, but the long game scares me a bit to put my hard earned money out there!!
Don’t invest like you’re buying a lottery ticket. Put your money in diversified fund like SP500 index and watch it creep upward at an average 10% a year. It ain’t fun or exciting but at 10% you’d double your money about every seven years, and without any effort or technical expertise.

Congrats to so many of you have been able to pull the pin! Like a few have said, I don't know if I will ever be able to pull the pin. Quick story....got laid off in '06 after 16 years with the same company. Decided to take a few months off and get my mojo back. So I painted the inside and outside of the house, re-sodded the front yard, washed and waxed all the vehicles, re-did the garage, blah, blah, blah....and after 6 weeks was bored out of my mind! I couldn't wait to get back to work. Hopefully someday I will get there, but for as good as I feel....not for at least 10 more years.
