$3-500 used to be the going rate, depending in which plug. I gotta think that's still the ballpark...

this happened to my 1999 V10 a few months ago. Very back plug. I had it repaired at Windsor AutoSales on the South Side of Havasu. Cost me about $250 to have it fixed. Very happy with their work. Been using them for years.

Cool vid...except for dude forgot to mention that making sure the piston is down before running drill/tap down the hole.

Why are the plugs blowing out? Just the porcelain and leaves the threads in the hole?

Buddy of mine did this and was happy he didn't take it to a shop and spend the $300 he was quoted.

I think the issue is with the metal part of the plug still stuck in the head. Like you said, if the threads are just wrecked it's cake. I used to be an olds tech and the drivability guys were always sending me quad 4's with with plugs that were stuck and the threads came with them when they removed them. I used the napa deal on an snap on air ratchet and even though they were 8" down the hole it was easy. That drill in that kit is the deal, no worries about drilling crooked.

Just wondering how many miles are on those plugs and who installed them? What brand plug are being replaced?

I have a hard time believing there is a casting flaw (metallurgy) problem or that the same machine tapped all of these problem threads using a bad tap. Has anyone done a compression/ leakdown test on the cylinders that are failing? Are all the threads failing in all 8 /10 holes?

I'm just a curious person. Nothing more. The plugs have to be glowing molten hot or something to create this situation.

I agree with the above post. This should almost never happen. It is a good reason to never have a "tune up" if your motor is running fine.

After thirty years of running trucks and boats and running several fleets of trucks and many boats, the only time I've had trouble is after a "tune up" (changing spark plugs and wires).......never let anyone fuck with your spark plugs and wires unless it's absolutely necessary...

If they aint broke....don't fuck with them!!

What happens is over time they loosen in 1996-2003 Trition Engines. Doesn't have anything to do with touching the plugs, it's just a bad design. In these years a std cast iron tapered seat plug was used in an aluminum head. Constant heat cycles and the plug will start to loosen. Then when there is not enough threads left, because the plug backed out just enough, the plug cant hold combustion and blows out.

I went through this and had them all inserted by www.blownoutsparkplug.com. He came to me and did this in front of my house, class C motorhome for a couple grand. I researched the shit out of the repair and his stuff made the best sense. I did all 10 so the bastards would not ruin another vacation.

2004 and up Ford changed to a motorcycle type plug with tons of threads and these you cant get out.

All this at 52k miles.

It helps to use copper anti-seize and replace them often

If you haven't gotten this taken care of give me a call at the shop Mon A.M. and i can take care of this for you and have you back on the road in an hr. I would definately recomend replacing all the plugs with updated ones so this doesn't ever happen again.I'm usually at the shop by 7am.

Plugs on the far left are O.E. contrary to popular beleif it has nothing to do with the casting of the heads it has to do with the lack of threads on the plug and the seating surface in the cylinder head, the plug second to the left is a replacement plug with more threads and with more threads into the head they do not come out unless they are left loose. Plug on the right are the 3 valve plugs that break off if you don't know how to remove them.

No! problem is the shoulder of the plug stops on the head and therefore there only a couple of threads biting in the cylinder head.If that makes sense, the new plugs as you can see in the pic shoulder is located in the same position but the depth of the threads are much longer so they actually screw into the head more than a couple of turns.Once the new plugs are installed plugs blowing out is not happening again. Thread inserts are required to repair cylinder head once a plug does blow.
