I have the opportunity to purchase a cargo box van with the utility doors for a great deal. The problem is, it hasn’t been registered since 2015 😳 My question is I’ve once heard after 7 years Its no longer in the DMV system so it should be much to register if my assumption is correct. Any one have any first hand knowledge of how the dmv works ?
Thanks for any help

DMV used to have a calculator if you have the last 5 of the VIN and plate number. Been a while though.

No. It’s in the system, and commercial. Call Jeff’s guy.

Can’t you just have a Lien Co file a lien for you , then take paperwork to dmv ?

State DMV gives zero shits about who owes the money, they will collect it to put it back on the road. Previous/Current/Purchased someone is paying.

Except it would be used in CA for commercial purposes (work truck).
Az registration might cause an issue

After registering in Az. go to calif DMV and get a commuter sticker. Might also be able to dual register in Ca. I used to need both Az. and Calif plates on some of the tow trucks we ran in both states.

Once it’s registered in Az I think I can drive right back to Ca and register it again. 🤷🏻‍♂️

If it is registered in his name, should not have to pay sales tax bringing it into Ca. Az won't charge tax on private party sale, so should be good.

I have always heard If the duration in another state is not long enough they will come after you for taxes.

This was almost 20 years ago but a friend had that problem on a new car bought out of state, registered, then moved reg to CA a couple months later.

Honestly if I purchase this truck which I most likely will I can register it in Az. It will probable take 6 months before I can put it into service anyways. Need to paint it company color, install all strobes, work lights and equipment before using it. Then register in Calif before putting it in service

You just solved your summer Islander boat launch vehicle concern if you buy it and keep in in AZ. Then start the transition after boat season. I am sure the Islander would love the box truck as your launch vehicle. One up the school bus :)

When our son moved to CA from CO, CA dinged us on sales tax because we bought his vehicle shortly before the move. They dreamed that we had to pay sales tax to register the vehicle in CA. Might want to look into that as well Paul.
