Also his face mask was fogging up according to what he was saying in free fall, meaning it could have been difficult for him to read his altimeter, he made the safe call to just pull it early rather than to risk it for the sake of another record. Also i believe when Kittenger jumped i think he had a drogue chute for the entire fall slowing his decent rate slightly.

This means Kittinger still gets to hold the record for longest free-fall.

You could well be right, it will be interesting to hear the official reason from them:thumbsup It was cool just to watch this guy, no way would I have the cads........

True. However he was in more atmosphere and decelerating at that point. He was over a mile up still when he pulled it, so seems like some adequate safety zone still. I would have thought the guys on the ground would be checking telemetry as well and telling him how much time/alt he had left. I think I did hear them say there were issues w/ the telemetry though.

He also started over a mile higher than the 23 I thought was the plan, would have thought that bought time.

Overall, I didn't expect a dude jumping from space to make a "safe call" and not just get every record haha.:skull:D

It had crossed my mind as well, but they never said that before or after? I'd say Kittenger's jump took more balls, there was so much less science to everything back then.

Didn't he end up pulling it well over 5k ft?

I didn't see the exact number I was just commenting on that you said he was up over a mile. Maybe he went faster than thought and didn't have the time.:)

He was about 15 seconds shy of the record.

He exited with less atmospheric resistance than what Kittinger, no drogue 'chute, went faster, and carried that speed closer to the ground before slowing (from resistance) to what is normally terminal around 128 MPH or so?
(I did not see what his speed was when he pulled)

If you do the math, IMO he just covered more distance faster, therefore running out of room?
Make sense?

I believe the shoot opens automatically based on his altimeter.

Had he passed out on the way down the shoot would automatically open landing him safely.

The automatic opener is a back up feature, normally.

(Nothing normal about this jump though!)

It MAY have been set to open there, but I would think he pulled it himself being conscious?

At 120+ MPH that is less than 30 seconds...

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2

Depends on how much over 5k.

But yeah, at 800+ mph it would make sense he was covering ground way too fast to beat the free fall record, as I doubt he slowed up to 128 all that quickly.

I think they they said he was at 10,000 feet when he pulled his chute (although I don't know the altitude of the landing site).

Back when cars were first invented, there were many that didn't think the human body could survive traveling 60 mph. LOL.

The government is to busy wondering where to spend my tax dollars. Helmet laws, helping the illegals, EPA, crazy studies on the green assed leapcatcher knat, figuring out ways to increase taxes with us thinking it's all good, tree huggers, how to hide the fact that the fuel cost is increasing, a few investigations on where all the money is going:blah::blah:

Which brings up the question, what agencies had to give approval for this jump?
I would also bet my last dollar that there is a contract for data sharing with the DOD, NASA, etc.

Let's not leave Rathion out of it, they are the DOD contractor that tracks and catologues everything in orbit for NASA and plots missile trajectories from the Cobra Dane at Shemya.

Thoughts?

I'm thinking not too many. What kind of clearance is needed to launch a weather balloon?

IT was pretty crazy. i thought he was in trouble when he was tumbling head over heels... then he stabilized out

Me too.
Just stabilizing was a monumental feat in itself!!!

See video above.
