Recomendations for a Mercury dealer or mechanic that can do a REPOWER for a 92' Cheetah Shadow

Anybody have some suggestions for a place to help us out in getting a repower done on our 92 Cheetah Shadow? We started this project back in October of 2022 with a shop in Havasu that said all the right things, promising us we would be done with our repower by April of 2023. We ordered a Mercury 300 Pro XS engine through them that was supposed to be delivered in Feb 2023. In April of 2023 we were informed they needed the money for the engine. The next day we were told we had missed the window with Mercury to get the engine (even though Mercury told us they don't have any "window" and don't do business like that). Through emails and text messages, we asked the shop what happened and where's our engine we had ordered but we never got an answer. In fact, we couldn't get anyone to return phone calls, emails or text messages.

On to our second shop, who said, "we got ya covered, no problem at all, we have a Mercury 300R in our shop". They gave us a quote, we set up a time to deliver the boat and when we showed up they said the appointment had been cancelled and other boats had been put in front of us. The next week we got sent a new proposal adding $7k more in additional labor and the statement that this job would be an "open end" ticket. Tried to discuss it with them, (50 hours in labor for a repower seems a bit much) but I was told they already had spent to much time on my boat and would not discuss it any further PLUS we had missed our window to get our boat into their shop. Is this "missed window" a Havasu thing? I asked if I could just buy the engine and find someone else to do the repower and the answer was NO. So there goes the last three months.

Now we are in the process of trying to get a quote from a 3rd shop, but it doesn't look good. They have seen the boat, got all the info they need, but I can't get the guy to return my phone calls. I sent an email today and left another phone message so we will see.

So.......any ideas? Any suggestions? Any recommendations for a Mercury Shop. A RESPECTIBLE, HONEST, TRUSTWORTHY, Mercury Dealer who knows what the hell they are doing. I'm beginning to think, that there is no such thing and just give up on this repower dream of ours.

We have a 1992 - 21' cheetah shadow, v-hull w/ 1,100 hrs, with a 1998 Mercury 225 ProMax Sport w/ Torque Mstr lower end w/ 700 hrs (needs a new powerhead). A few years ago the boat had a new interior, gauges, stereo system and bimini top that was done by Cheetah (they also installed a drain plug in the boat at that time). It will have a new transom and exterior gel coat by the end of next month (October) and we would like to repower with a 2022 or 2023 Mercury 300 Pro XS or 300R. It will need structural alum plate and angle iron at the transom and kickers, a hydraulic jack plate installed with gauge and bezel control switch on the steering wheel, Mercury ECO monitor gauge and new harness assy-adapter and the use of existing gauges if needed. Is there anyone in Havasu (where the transom work is being done right now) or in the Phoenix area (where we live) who can do this repower?

We have been cruising in our boat every single year, for the past thirty-one years. From Havasu to Laughlin, Topock, Needles, Avi, Lake Mohave, Cottonwood Cove, Willow Beach, Parker........so you can understand the frustration and hardship I am suffering. My wife is miserable because we haven't been in the water for the past two years. If I go another summer without our boat I am as good as dead.

I got to get her back in the boat and in the water.....

This is a winter job.
Set something up for the week of December 5th. 😉
It's not a simple as an engine swap, probably going to need some rigging as well?

I don‘t know about that alum plate and angle iron, but it is not that hard to repower an outboard-powered boat.

Have you considered doing it yourself?

WOT Marine is my suggestion x100. Kyle will get you setup and honest. It is worth the trouble towing out.

I can already guess one of the shops up above that you are mentioning. Does it start with an F?

Why yes, it did start with an F. Thanks for the referrals everyone. I will keep you posted on what we end up doing.

This is more than just a repower.

I can’t help because I live in SoFlo. But, I have a couple of questions.

What‘s the current condition of the transom? Is it fiberglass over wood? Does it have any spider cracks? How much does your current motor weigh? Whats the weight of the new motor?

Even though I can’t help, post a pic of the inside of your transom. Some old boat transoms are easier than others to reinforce. Maybe yours is one of those that make mechanics rethink their careers! Lol

Btw, I live in “outboard land” (South Disney). I am pretty sure my guys would have your boat finished by next Friday.

I am unfamiliar with the Cheetah you have, but I see a lot of Armstrong Brackets added to repowered outboard older hulls.
