Well it's been a really rough month for myself and my family. For those that didn't see the thread I posted a few weeks back the second one of my male cousins on my moms side (both brothers) committed suicide on May 20th, both in the past 14 months.

Well what better way to get over some seriously screwed up shit than boat shopping [emoji106]. The girls in the family have been blowing up Nordstroms so it's only fair right? Truth be told I was already shopping but the timing coincided and it certainly has made me and my co-conspirator (Dad) a lot happier over the past few weeks.

I grew up with a serious case of boat on the brain and have always had a few boats that I've told myself I would buy if I could swing it and they were for sale. After being boatless for almost a year I was more than restless and about two months ago one of my top five was put on the market. I ran the numbers a bunch of times and kept talking myself out of it for various reasons.

After things hit the fan with the family a few weeks back I had the conversation with my Dad (over a few cocktails) looking for him to talk me out of it and he jumped on the bandwagon and supported the idea. So we went to see the boat once and then again with a family friend who is a surveyor and owns a yacht outfitting company. Trying to do my due diligence I went and saw another similar model for sale for a comp and actually liked the layout, condition and motors better. So I abandoned the idea of the first boat and went saw the comp a second time with our family friend. After this second viewing and some serious thinking, I made the decision to make an offer.

Well the offer went out, was countered, and then I countered the counter to meet in the middle of my original offer and the owners counter. I signed the official purchase agreement paperwork and put a deposit down today! While the purchase is still pending a diesel motor evaluation, yacht survey, sea trial and final payment I am cautiously pretty stoked.

Now the good part - the boat:

The boat is a 1984 29' Crystaliner (the same boats as OC lifeguards use) that was repowered and regelled at the Crystaliner factory in 2006. It is currently powered by twin turbocharged diesel Yanmars with just under 1000 hours. Should be a blast to fish and seriously cut down on the 4 hour trip to Catalina on the 32 Grand Banks that I've been bumming off of my grandparents [emoji12]

I'll keep this thread updated with pictures and info on the diesel survey & marine survey process as well as the sea trial for anyone that is interested.

Who knows maybe Dave will send me a shirt afterwards [emoji106]

Here are a few pics of the boat:

Haha you never know we might have to take a subcontractor fishing trip [emoji106]

By the way thanks again for dropping that stuff by the office today.

No problem. I had to pick up my boss at a car dealer near by so I came a lot earlier then I had told you. Your dad wasn't there either. Must have been on the boat. :thumbsup

Fuck ya. I always said I'd love to have one of those lifeguard boats. I've heard they're near bulletproof.

How many axles on the trailer?:)

Maybe I should get a triple on order. Bet I could throw some rollers in Parker with 12k pounds at 20+ knots [emoji12]. Probably gonna have to be a tilt though since the beam is 11' lol

Just finalized the schedule for all the checkouts before the deal is finalized. Sea trial Saturday, Survey Monday and diesel evaluation Thursday. Spending a chunk on due diligence but I'd better get used to it with twin turbo diesels. Would rather know now than later. I'll keep the thread updated with photos from each [emoji106]

Just got back from the sea trial and I can't stop smiling [emoji16][emoji16][emoji51][emoji3][emoji12]. Went out of Newport for about an hour and ran it up and down the RPM ranges. The motors performed perfectly and the boat is an absolute beast. It was rough outside with a large swell, decent sized wind waves and a lot of boat chop. The thing just plowed through it all the way to the end of the sticks at 24 knots. No smacking, slamming or much movement at all even going through party boat wakes. I guess that's what you get with a 29' boat with 11' beam that weighs 12,000lbs. On top of all that the boat get 1.8 mpg cruising at 18 knots. Keeping my fingers crossed that the survey goes off without a hitch. I can't give the seller my money fast enough [emoji106][emoji106]

I would totally love an open sportfish or similar boat - I was just looking at the lifeguard boat yesterday that was working off Riviera beach in SC and thinking how cool they are - nice find !

Marine survey happened today. Things went well for the most part. A few things came up as could be expected but no deal breakers. Lightened my wallet a little with the survey and haul out and I did seriously pucker up seeing what some people were dropping on their rides in the ship yard [emoji12] I think a few people's yard bills are equivalent to my purchase price...

Got the diesel survey results back today. Pending engine oil and transmission oil samples things are in decent shape. Looks like the tranny oil coolers are about ready to be replaced and the engine cooling systems are probably about ready to be serviced. Not blown but a good safety precaution. Onus is on the seller to provide records of when these items were replaced last. If they can't be provided or are ready for replacement I'm gonna get him to throw some money in the deal for that.

Im stoked about this deal but without question its been a bit stressful.

Have been working on some names to keep my mind occupied. Give me your feedback:

Livin' It - (long story but it's a term my cousin who passed recently used frequently)

Lifestyle - (name jacking from one of my grandparents old boats but it describes me pretty well)

Liquidated Damages II - (in construction and the name of my first boat)

Loose Cannon - (one of those words may or may not be my last name)

Loose Cannons - (I may or may not have a partner with the same last name)

Loose Cannon's - (see above and kinda like the possessive apostrophe)

Whatcha got?

Done deal today. I met the seller on the boat at 4pm and spent an hour or so going through the systems. At 7 met with my mechanic who also happens to be going to the island with my parents this weekend. We removed to tranny hoses that were wearing on the fiberglass. Getting them redone first thing in the am and meeting my parents at the island on their boat. I couldn't stop smiling all afternoon. Now that the deal is done I'll pm you for the shirt RD.

Also had to decide on the name for the coast guard title transfer the other day. Went with "Loose Cannon"

So since the maiden voyage I've had another Catalina trip and used the boat 4-5 other times. It's been sweet so far knock on wood. Next week I'm having the electrical system redone. Adding a house battery system separating the starting batteries from the lights, bait tank etc as a safety's and adding a built in inverter charger. Also having the annual service done. It's not cheap. The bill will be what a full rebuild on the 351 my last boat cost...but you gotta pay to play right?! [emoji12]
