It looks like I'm a member. Surgical consult next Wednesday to learn more after urgent care doc gave the diagnosis.

It turns out the Peloton I got for fathers day is the gift that keeps on giving.

I got off the bike after my first 20 minute ride and noticed a large lump on the right side of my pubic area and a tugging in my right testicle.

The internet search led me to Hernia. I could manipulate it back in but decided a trip to Kaiser was in order.

Tell me about what's next??

Well, undoubtedly the pre-op room will be chilled to freezing, and the nurse they have shave you will be cute. I don't why this is, but I think it's in their playbook.

I had a "patch job" 14 years ago, I was 33. The couple days following, some swelling and "discomfort"...kind of a throwback to being kicked in the balls as a kid, bruised feeling. After the first couple days, just have to watch what you're doing. Not only what you lift, but how. Things like getting off the couch, do slowly for awhile. Twists and pulls feel a bit funky, and your body will let you know. I was in low gear for a week, and fully up and running by three. I was also roofing at the time, physical job with little rest. If you have a more "normal" job, probably not a bad recovery. When I was starting back working, my body was yelling at me a bit.

I've had two over the years. One when I was a kid, and one maybe 30 years ago?

The last one I waited over year to get fixed. That was a Really bad idea.

It hurt So fucking bad when it was done. Doc said it was cause of all the scar tissue that had built up, and had to be cut out, to make right.

If you caught yours earlier, it should be a simple fix.

DO NOT LET EM PUT A MESH IN YOU!!!

My buddy had to have his re-done multiple times cause the mesh created issues.

Just tell em to tie it up with some dock line if it's That bad! 😜

Planks and push ups to keep that core strong. 👍🏼

The OR will be as cold as a meat locker and we have no clue why.

Ask the nurses to put the Cather in AFTER you're under anesthesia.
The ER DR may pop the hernia back into place before you go in.

When I woke up the drugs made me hallucinate.

If you go to the cafeteria don't sit with the Jews, they tell jokes and you'll have to hold your incision.

This! When I had it done, the nurse was a dude, which made it very weird. I think me telling him he was the first guy to handle my dick kinda pissed him off (yes, he was gay), and he repaid me by making sure removal was extra painful. I don’t think he fully deflated it. 😳

I had one near the belly button. Took surgery to repair. Dr gave me two options, a less painful recovery stop-gap fix, or a very painful recovery fix where I wouldn't have to do it again. I opted for the latter. Holy SH!# that recovery sucked!

I became an expert in hernias after I had mine repaired 25 years ago. They are more common than you'd think simply because we're men and that's how the human anatomy works. Take as much time off as you can as you don't want to re-injure yourself. I didn't do shit for a week and I swear that helped with the healing process. I was limited to light lifting for a few weeks, then back to semi-normal after a month. My repair was the mesh style with it sewn inside my lower abdomen wall. Luckily, this far I haven't had any issues. You'll be fine. Just plan on being a couch potato for a bit. 💪

I’ve never had a hernia. I’m 60 so I’ve had my share of, well, you know.
My god we’re getting old aren’t we.
I’d say we’re Geritol generation but I have no idea what Geritol even does.

The worst pain. My wife and MIL had to move me around and get me in out of bed, on/off the toilet, etc.. I remember the 1st time I coughed, I literally cried from the pain. I'm impressed you finished Legend of Zelda! haha. Good work!

That's the thing I did 20 minutes at what I felt was a medium pace.

Maybe it was the body position who knows. I did feel some discomfort in that area a month ago so I think I just made it worse it was already there.

In reading other's responses, I think I got off easy. The other thing that may have been to my advantage, I'd had wrecks and broke stuff pretty good before the hernia. Heck, I popped off my finger the year before. So, maybe it's relative

I think relativity might be an understatement as we age. 😁

Had double inguenal hernia surgery a few years ago. Not a lot of fun, and plan on being down for a few weeks. After about 3 weeks pretty much back to normal.

Joined that club a long time ago. Popped out on my taking the trash out was not fun. Went under the knife they found a 2nd one. So I got mesh and another hole.just stitched up. Holding up fine. I do feel like sometimes my insides catch the mesh and I still have no feeling at the scar.

Surgery was fine, no catheder for mine. I remember going back to the OR and flirting with the nurses and then waking up in the recovery room. Tools about 2 weeks to feel pretty normal and 3 to feel about 100% but I was only around 23 or 24 I think so I'm sure that helped healing.

The only thing I swear the dropped me or my leg in some crazy way to do what they needed. Ever since I've had mild hip pain.

I've had 2, will need a third eventually. The mesh's have been really good 10 years on. Like Ivy growing through a chain link fence. All depends who's doing the surgery.

Removing the catheter a group of hot, young sexy student nurses surrounded my bed and it was : onnnnnnnne!!!!! ,,,,,, twwwwwwwwwwwoooooooo!!!!!!! ,,, threeeeeeeeeeeeee,,,,,, PULL!

Your John Thomas has retreated and retracted to acorn size.

Felt like the catheter was a tape measure. A long, spring-return metal construction type, shop worn, chunks of clinging concrete that had splashed on it, sharp and chipped rusted edges,,

The dialuded pain killer is good but after a day under the influence from the wife to Iron man it, ween off pain killers and take the healing process as it comes. No wussies around the wife.

Umbilical here. Doc said that if I travel internationally and it becomes strangulated, there are parts of the world that can't fix it. Was a pain in the ass. You don't realize how much you use your stomach muscles when you drop a load. Also, lay on couch then roll off onto your knees when you get up.

You guys got me worried. Just turned 60, sounds like this could happen just doing normal stuff.
Best wishes on your recovery.

I was told I have an umbilical hernia in Feb 2020. I met with the surgeon to get it fixed, then CA locked down for COVID a couple weeks later. Since I wasn't able to get it fixed for a couple years, and the damage was done, i still haven't gotten it fixed. Sometime later this year, I will get it fixed. It is hard to find a good time to be down though.

I'm 61 and last year noticed my belly button looked different, then I started noticing there was a slight protrusion when I had a full stomach. Don't know how or when I got it but I think it has been there quite awhile. I asked my doc about it and he confirmed hernia and jammed thumb in to get an idea of the size and he said smaller than a thumb tip. He didn't seem concerned but said people that have a big one have a chance of getting part of their bowell caught in there which can restrict blood flow and require a trip to the ER. He said if it doesn't hurt, which it doesn't, just leave it which is what I have done. Getting rid of belly fat made it a non issue for me. I've also considered the mesh but the 6 week downtime is an issue for me.

Make sure it’s a Slide Anchor dock line.

6 week downtime? I had the umbilical hernia surgery and was back to work in a couple days. I wasn't in the field anymore, so I was working in the office.

Well, no lifting things, no strenuous activity, nothing athletic. He said walking or moving about is fine.

How was it by the way, did you get mesh? Painful recovery or just soreness? And how long before fully functional?

Yes on the mesh. A little sore and a week or two to be fully functional. I didn't have much pain before the surgery. I had mine done before it got worse and I didn't like my belly button sticking out. :p

Mine is a little different....
Mine is an incisional repair. I was split open from the bottom of my ribs to my pubic bone. Of course being a guy ( we are biologically weak through the abdomen) it was never going to heal right. I ended up with several along the incision line. The first round was bad, I mean really bad. Of course in my case, they had to tear part of my guts loose from my abdominal wall due to scar tissue from the previous surgery. Talk about something special for the next week or so..... They put in small patches of mesh with this one. I was supposedly good as new after about 6 week.

About 12 weeks after the first repair, I leaned over a bar and felt it tear completely loose on one of them. So, six months later it was back under the knife. this time they put in one large piece of mesh. I've seen x-rays of my abdomen since and the titanium coils they use to attach it to your muscle show. This time they put mesh all the way across and from my pubic bone all the way to just under my rib cage. for the last ten years my gusts haven't tried falling out but I have almost no flexibility and limited movement in my abdomen. Not real impressed with this. The second was like described above for discomfort, not good but manageable. The first one where they had to tear all the scar tissue lose from everything was epic.....

Good luck! It really shouldn't be that bad.

Surgical consult done.

She says it will be a small incision below belly button then various newfangled gadgets thru that opening to tuck, sew and mesh over the hole.

Now I wait for a date.

The whole thing she estimated at 45 minutes, sheesh my last dental visit took longer?

Estimated recovery is 2 weeks.

I had the umbilical hernia fix about 5 years ago. Was painful for a few days afterward and was slow to heal the incision, but 5 weeks later I was climbing the pyramids in Mexico. It would occasionally feel odd with the mesh for about a year later.

1 month post surgery I'm doing great.

Everything is healed up I never had any pain whatsoever post surgery.

Kaiser invoiced the outpatient procedure at $26,000. so I hit my out-of-pocket for the year at $3,000. (My plan charges 20% until out of pocket is reached on outpatient surgery).

Three small incisions. most of the work is done through the belly button. there are YouTube videos on the procedure "inguinal hernia".

I'm still not supposed to lift anything over 20 lb for a few more weeks.

Part of the post surgery instructions were to walk every day, well I've really taken a liking to that. I'm up to almost 3 miles daily and 14 push-ups along the way at the exercise station.
