When going to Havasu, is it faster to take the 10 to Vicksburg Road to the 72 to the 95 OR just the 10 to the 95 in Quartzsite? Previously we have just taken the 10 to the 95, but I'm curious if the other way is faster?

It takes me a little longer but I go through Wickenburg.
It's a more relaxed drive and I don't end up finding myself towing at 85MPH.

+1 on going through Wickenburg.

If you live in North PHX, you can just take Carefree hwy out of town instead of I10. You don't backtrack and will rarely have traffic to deal with. I think the overall time is about the same but less stress and the drive goes by faster for me because of all of the towns on the way.

I don't go that way of course but when I lived in Tucson I always cut across at Vicksburg. Much better.

Now I just have a merry little 2.5 hour drive down a 2 lane road :)

Thankfully, we aren't towing this trip, but i'll keep this in mind for the future

We do live in N. Phx... so you end up taking the 60 to the 72? We have to drop our dog off in Surprise, so maybe this would be faster than taking the 303 south to the 10... :hmm:

Definitely less traffic going through Vicksburg and a few miles less if I remember correctly.

UB,

Vicksburg is the ticket when towing if starting west on I10.

Unless you live way north, like Jomax or farther, or it is rush hour in the morning, I would not go to Wickenburg then west on 60 to Wenden, Salome and then up the 72 to the 95, I would head back down to I10 west. Under no circumstances would I take 60 north from phoenix to Wickenburg as that is sun city, sun city west and blue hairs in Buick's forever and traffic lights forever. If you live way north and want to go the Wickenburg route, you can take I17 to the 74, or Lake Pleasant Parkway to the 74. 74 is simply the old Carefree highway west to the 60 and then north to Wickenburg like you are going to Vegas.

If you are not towing (I drive faster than I tow as I am old), and one travels at 10 over which is 85, I10 all the way to 95 and then north to Parker can be quicker as I10 is divided and much faster than Vicksburg road, and the 72. All the agencies have gotten the memo that Desert Storm is coming up so expect the Sheriff's office, Parker police and the reservation police out and about. It will be a turkey shoot on 72 and 95.

So in a nutshell, if towing Vicksburg, if car-ing, I10 to 95.......

Just remember, what happens in the car during road trips stays in the car......

Vicksburg is like 15 miles shorter than going through Quartzite. With the freeway speed limit, it takes about the same amount of time. I prefer Vicksburg though.

Very helpful info, Rodney! Thanks very much, I really appreciate it!

Oh, and as for the travel activities, I've got that covered :skull:

Just did a google map.

From my house to parker via I10 to 95 is 171.33 miles

From my house to parker via I10 to Exit 81 Salome road to 72 to 95 is 171.77 miles

From my house to parker via I10 to Exit 45 Vicksburg, to 72 to 95 is 163.71 miles.

By helicopter it is the same amount of time because you have to drive to the Hangar, pre-flight, fuel and then depart..........travel activities not suggested.....

8 miles according to that. That's not much of a difference. Plus your travel speed is faster on I10. I still don't like going through Quartzite.

Quartzite has a lot of blue hairs, trailer parks (aka swing dens) and the like but a little less in the summer months.

So does this mean a retirement home is Quartzite is out? :(

We did both for 4 years and I liked 10 through Quartzsite better. Never towed, but I would much rather do 80+ on 10 versus that two lane 72 which is a lot like Rice Rd.....always ended up being faster doing 10 to Q for us.

I never understood the whole parking a fifth wheel in the desert next to the freeway just because the temperature is mild during the winter. There's nothing worth looking at. Hunting rocks? Woopty do! Nothing better than collecting more worthless shit that no one will ever give a fuck about. Lol.

And Brown I set the cruise on 75 through Bouse. Turn the Valentine One on and go.

Fuck Quartzite!

In a geology class years ago my professor practically got a hard on when I told him I had been to Quartzsite. Apparently it's a pretty big deal amongst rock enthusiasts.

I left out the part where I was only there for 2 minutes since I had the hang over from hell and turned off too early coming home from Parker. Looked around and said "WTF? Where's the cows and gas station?"

PHX peeps, how many miles is it from PHX to Havi? Any traffic?

Im in Tucson and it's just under 300 miles for me from my door to the Marina. So from Phx you can knock 100 miles off that.

Traffic all depends and what time you're leaving. The 10 gets backed up sometimes, other wise not to bad.

I didn't realize Tucson was such a long drive. You're driving as far as I am, just from a different direction. 4hr drives aren't fun, right?:grumble:

It's every bit of 5 hours pulling.

It's sucks I hate it!

Trust me it's way better than towing from LA/OC where the speed limit with a trailer is 55 all the way:grumble:

Agreed. If I'm towing a big boat I go quartzite everytime. Not towing, I will go vickburgs. If go through Vicksburg towing I always get stuck behind a semi. I've never gone through wickenburg, I want to try it sometime.

We go through Wickenburg (60) then turn off right at Hope onto the 72. It's about 2 hours 45 minutes (160miles) from cave creek to get to Terrible's in downtown Parker. Would never go any other way.

I-10 through Quartzite is like "even money", with two lanes most of the way and the ability to pass easily and nearly a lock time wise . Vicksburg road is better if everything goes right, but a couple of tractor trailers and some slow cars can kill your time savings or tempt you to make bad passing decisions. Vicksburg road pretty much is going to put me in a "speeding condition" most of the way when its 55 and I am going 64... Me and a friend took both routes at the same time and Vicksburg road saved him 11 minutes. I prefer Quartzite, lower blood pressure, setting the cruise a 75 mph and taking even money....

When we lived on the West side of Phoenix, instead of going to Pleasant for the day, we would drive to Blythe instead.
Less people, the water is way better and you could actually find a beach. 1 hour to Pleasant, 2 hours Blythe. No more day trips to the river now that we have moved. :(

I have to find a place on the water one of these days!

Excellent suggestion! I wondered how screwed up the 303 was going to be. It's been awhile since I've been on that road, but I know they are doing massive construction right now. Thanks for the input!!! :thumbsup
