Question For The Masses...Vehicle Transport Related

Ok, watching an auction in Cali. It's a bigger truck, says good mechanical condition. So far, no bids...I don't think it could be registered in Cali to a business, CARB BS. So, if, big "IF", I were to bid on and win the auction, I'd have to get it here. Now, this is where it gets interesting. I think I can get a temporary permit from AZ MVD, and banzai it home. Definite maybe. This is also where things get a little more cattywampus...I'd have the POS there. I don't know if U-Haul would rent me a tow dolly for a temp tagged truck, though I'm pretty sure the truck could tow it. The other issue is the truck says good mechanical condition, but 350 miles towing is a hell of a leap of faith. In my youth, I'd just take or borrow a bike, and load it in the bed. I don't have a bike anymore, and lack the desire to ride that far anyway. So, I'm wondering if anyone has ideas or experience with this stuff. In a perfect world, we'd plan a family trip, an excuse to see my wife's family. Unfortunately, not really an option. If I could load the Prius in the bed, no problem, but it's a utility bed. Pretty sure every Highway Patrol between LA and here would light me up if it were strapped up top

We flew to Tuscon, bought a truck, drove home to Montana with no plates and no temp permit. No one gave a shit, crossed 5 states, however we avoided California. The tools we bought at Home Depot came in handy, the 10 mm lead the stampede out of the box and across the parking lot. No headlights was our only problem. Drove during the day.

Just have yourself some good bill of sale paperwork. We insured it in the parking lot before drove off.

The one I'm looking at is an 07, El Strippo model, crew cab...with a crane. It's a gasser, which sucks, but better than a 6.0 Your rig has some advantages though, Like I could cheat a gooseneck in it still. May see how things go. I like the idea of a crew though...easier to sleep in. Hell, with yours I could build a condo between the boxes.

As a side note, it's complete BS that you can't register these!

I wanna say that its the 3500 or bigger diesels that cant be registered after i think 10 years for work use.Not sure on the gassers but we had work trucks in ca that were over 10 years old with no issues.

The issue seems to be with the 450's and 550's. In the classifieds here, there's a really nice 450 for sale.

This auction has 15 lots. 12 are currently active, as it started last week. The 3 lots with no bids have one thing in common, all three are aged out. The other two are MDT's, also mechanic type trucks. Those would be great also, but I don't have a current CDL, and can't afford to insure one of those either. I may be just dreaming about getting it for cheap, but you never know.

Hopefully if you get it, it starts, and can drive to O Reilly auto to swap out those parts you know will give you piece of mine after driving it a few miles.

A bottle of fuel treatment and proper air in the tires. Maybe an oil change if it looks old.

@monkeyswrench Kevin, as a former U-Haul employee, we didn't care about what the registration codition was. As long as the tow dolly was rated for the car. You got that covered.

Secondly, I had an AZ 3 day move permit, on a Ford truck, and moved it from so cal to Az. With boat in tow. Banzai'd that trip. Lien sale'd paper work only.

Pro tip- avoid the scales. Goffs Rd thru Laughlin/Bullhead back to 40, scale free.

If you feel like paying California their fees, get a smog move permit. $40 bux, or something like that. That'll get ya to the state line, legally.

Fwiw, anything behind a tow truck is legal, registration wise, just sayin'.

I have towed many a "honda civic" on a Uhaul dolly. they have never once asked about the registration status of the vehicle on the dolly. if the "honda civic" in question will fit on their flat beds, even better. you dont have to worry about any rolling gear of the questionable vehicle on the ground.

What about renting a car in AZ and dropping it off in CA close to where you pick up the truck? I bought a car in Temecula over the summer and rented a car one-way to pick it up. I think it was around $50 for the one day rental.

California has a one trip permit. It was ten or fifteen dollars. Not sure about towing with it though. Think it was for unladen vehicles.

They have a pretty strict "no working on vehicles" policy it stated...with one exception of swapping out batteries. Thought about just having a new battery with me to swap into it. It being a former municipal deal, their wiring always sucks. I have to look at the auction tonight, and see if it's been bid on. If it hasn't, I'll throw a bid at it tomorrow night. Kind of weird though, I'll be out all day Thursday, and won't know until later.

If you do win the bid, AAA has towing up to 200 miles, just have to get the RV towing endorsement. Well worth the $275.00

Not sure which auction you might be looking at but I buy from auctions frequently in Southern California and I can tell you just about every larger truck I've ever purchased from an auction needs a drive shaft from them moving it around the auction yard with large forklifts. They typically don't take the time to block it up and if the drive shaft hangs down below the frame rails it dings it up pretty good. Just food for thought.

What I had read was something in terms of some weird metric with year of truck, number of trucks owned and NoX numbers in regards to different years. I really didn't understand much of it when I was looking, and that was a while back. The good thing is, I live in a county where I've seen a 440 in a D-50 and 4BT's in Bronco's and Jeeps

Well, someone put in the minimum bid this morning...well, they bid something. You put your max, and it puts up what is required. I can see that the guy has spent less than 5k total in the system and I think 5 or less auctions. Hopefully just fishing, but we'll see.

The 450 I'm looking at is an MWD truck, in the same auction as the two heavies. The heavies are probably less desirable I'd think, or less marketable for flippers. They'd kick ass, but with my luck I'd get popped for driving out of class making the run home. The 450 would be great, but probably a longshot.

It's pretty funny really. My friend and his wife got married at the chapel just west of there, and some photos were done with the old MWD building in the background. Before that, we used to race there. Could get one pass before the trailer park retirees would call us in. Ahh, the good ol' days
