Max Machine Worx has always been known for.building the strongest Bravo style drives in the industry. Now they are upgrading the 400R!
Outta curiosity, what would be the reasoning for not using the same alloy for the entire shaft? Is the one side that's inside the lower unit a stronger alloy but just not corrosive resistant or something?

Does the 3 year warranty end with Merc first?

Interesting Dave,
Sooooo, does Mercury have dual alloy, welded shafts on the Bravos and #6's??

I would assume that Merc would say it does. Legally I don’t believe it would unless the failure was in the area of the part, and he proved the part caused it.

Being that I’m not sure if the alloys That Merc is using I can’t say that one is stronger or not stronger than the other. I know one is corrosive and the outside isn’t, and they are friction welded and that weld is the failure point. It’s a rare failure and pretty specific to a certain set of conditions but it’s happening enough that it was decided to come up with a solution.

Long story short you aren’t going to break one of these new ones

Haven’t broke a prop shaft yet but wondering what the price of these would be installed for piece of mind.

Yeah, I have more questions than all you combined times 10…

So, I will be polite…. and not ask them.

QA/Manufacturing… been my world for a very long time…
The moment someone here thinks they understand QA, Dig into Sub Safe QA… after you have 24 months of researching that, then we start the conversation.

These will pair nicely with the soon to be release Motec ecus that are a direct plug in for the merc outboards, they turn a 450 into a 570. Same harness connector, same mounting foot print, but all the bitchin Motec telemetry, logging, system interoperability, tuning, etc.

Open the cowling, unplug and unbolt the merc ecu, replace with the motec, cowling on, go play. 15 minute swap.

I am sure the 450 prop shafts will start having issues then. That is why the gear case on the 500r changed so it hold the extra power.

On pump gas? 130hp more with a tune is pretty insane, given that its a 400hp motor stock.
How much boost?

He was talking about the 450r motor... Rumor was Mercury tested them up in the 550 range before release but gear cases weren't holding up. I'll assume they were testing that high more for 500r testing since the platform is mainly the same. Their "Map" sensor they bragged about isn't anything new but I think it's good they are using them and managing boost via the ecu to make sure the motors survive in hotter temps and lower octane.

Is breaking these an issue? I thought that was one of the appeals of an OB.

I have no idea how much boost. I don't even know what they run now. I'm not sure it's even part of their standard data stream to see in the stock ECU....

What i do know is that Motec invested a shit load of money with a shop down in Australia and built and absolutely sick full submersion dyno cell. They completely reverse engineered all of Mercury's engine to engine and engines to dash communications, so these ECUs will work exactly the same to the end user as stock. This is mainly of importance when dealing with the 4+ engine setups where you still only run 2 shifters and throttles, and the computers all talk to each other to decide what motor goes into what gear, and how much throttle etc.

They don't make claims they can't back up. The lead engineer from Australia came over a couple months back and met with myself and DaveH to go over their upcoming release.

The other cool thing they did is make a computer with the matching footprint for the inboards, this means when you go to freshen up one of the more modern inboards everything from the 496 to the 1350s they have a plug and play ECU with base cals, that is fully live tunable, no more of the old Mefi or motorola hack ins.
