My heart goes out to the families...
But it appears inexperience with handling a 28' at high rate of speed is going to be the cause...
I don't want to be coaching from the bleachers, just a lesson to those who drive 80+ MPH then pulling "G" force turns
The ability to purchase a $100K boat should come with a warning labels
Sad day for all us on Rds Place

I doubt he was talking shit Miguel. He was simply making an observation of what happened.
Did u want him to not say anything if he saw what happened?
Not sure why u have a problem with his opinion, but oh well.

Man I hate to agree with Kilrtoy, but Jesus Christ, two people probable dead and you're firing from the cheap seats with absolutely zero inside knowledge... Fuck me I wish all you rumor fags would find another site. How in the shit can any meaningful human being take pleasure and/or speculate about circumstances they have no fucking intricate knowledge of?

I don't think any of the speculation is meant to be negative. There is always going to be speculation on any accident. I do it all the time when there is an airplane crash and boat and car crashes. Always running through different thoughts as to what could be the cause, then start eliminating them.

As far as this being a thread regarding prayers for the crash victims, it definitely may not be the right place. Maybe a seperate thread on safety concerns of high speed twin engine boats. I definitely have a few concerns and have asked a couple boat builders about a drive or engine shutting down at full power and speed. Anyway......

Lots of thoughts to the fallen..

Agreed, everyone has an opinion. The bottom line is that this has changed lives forever.

I wanted to stay out of this discussion but I just got a call from a friend in Havasu that wanted to tell me about this accident. He began to specualte and then go into his personal opinion about boater safety and inexperienced people now being able to buy repo boats... Needless to say I stopped him in his tracks and reminded him of how inexperienced boaters were in the good times.

The reality is that any one of us and every one of us could have been in this situation.

So what does trying to put inexperience in to this equation have to do with anything? Should we create licensing programs and only let special people with special permits operate high performance boats? Should we only allow people who have owned a required number of boats to purchase high powered boats? Better yet... Why don't we get congress to decide who can buy a boat and only the people chosen by the congress can buy a boat...

How about this... A person looking to have a good time and enjoy their life decided to take some people out to the river on a boat. All of the people were having a great time and something went wrong causing a catastrophic event to occur... There was nothing more to the equation than something went wrong and thats that!

Its funny how life CAN'T happen. There always has to be something. Usually its booze. The driver of the boat had a drink or twenty and somehow or another there was an accident. We all know that in many of the accidents alcohol wasn't the cause but because there was alcohol involved alcohol was somehow to blame. In this situation something happened and since alcohol cant be blamed it's inexperience.

There are many people on these boards that are sheeple and want to jump to conclusions.... Not to mention have a lynching party for anyone they think did something they dont agree with.

If you own a boat and you have NEVER gone faster than you were "trained" to go or you own ANY motor vehicle for that matter and you have never done anything other than what the government says you can do... You are one of two things... 1. A liar or 2. you have never lived your life.

I give a big Fuck you to all of the sheeple jumping to conclusions. People will live their lives and you have no room to judge them.

I have a question....don't have a boat that can go 100mph+ but if you lose a drive does it usually result in hooking or potentially throwing people out...? Is there anything you can do as the driver? I would just like to understand the mechanics of going that fast and having a problem occur?

Oh, if that is the case...why aren't there more accidents since I know people lose drives all the time. You don't need to speculate on this particular accident but I'd appreciate some insight...

Prayers to all who were involved in this accident.

Not speculating on this accident in particular.

But, seems to me the manufacturers should try to integrate some sort of breakaway feature to their boats with twin engines. The loads created by going into reverse are pretty low, the delta between that and a drive breaking at high speed are huge. Seems it wouldn't be too hard to create a valve for the hydraulics that would allow the drive to pop up. I know my O/B comes up if I reverse too hard & I assume would come-up if it broke at a higher speed. I'm not saying it would eliminate the possibility of a crash, but might give the driver a fighting chance.

I think it comes down to the prop & it being twin engine. Depending on what breaks, the prop my lock up or may just do some sort of freewheel. Single engine boats would create the drag from the center, so there's little tendency to hook. With twin engine you have one side still pushing & the other creating soo much drag that a hook, regardless of driver experience seems very likely.

Signed up here to post a response in mike's defense. Am a good friend of the missing. And I will inform you all that this accident was not from lack of experience. Mike grew up around boats and has owned many boats from flat bottom drag boats all the way up to high powered 42' fountains. He owned a house out there around the lake and has been around that area for years. He is not a kid that went out and bought a 100,000 boat as I m pretty sure 100,000 might not even cover the motors in that boat. All of us from illinois are praying for the best. So if all you have is negative shit that has no truth in what ur saying keep it to ur self because we don't want to read it. Know the facts before you open your mouth or type it out! Over and out from Illinois

Got a video saved somewhere on my computer, Kroozin going at a high rate of speed in his Skater at a pokerrun, loosing one engine keeping on going straight. Also, local 40' Skater loosing a #6 drive going over 100, kept going straight.Smaller cats would probably act quite different;y.One scenario could easily cause a spinout with a cat is, catching a larger wake from another boat with one sponson only. The speculation will end, once the survivors will be able to talk about the incident. If a V hull looses one engine or braking a drive, would immediately settling the hull thus providing more directional forward movement by the keel .A cat would stay on plane longer because of less friction area and air entrapment.Adding thrust on one side could become an issue. We probably never figure out what happened to Steve's 30' HTM that crashed either.
Some vitnesses say this Eliminator[?] kept circling after the crash, that's bad news and shouldn't have happened if a lanyard was attached to the driver. If they couldn't find the bodies, that means life jackets weren't on or ripped off.Same scenario in the HTM accident. It's a sad event and my condolences to the families of the people involved.Hopefully the survivors fully recover .

My thoughts and prayers are with all that are involved.

A friend of mine had a 30ft Daytona lose a drive and this incident sounds very similar. We were just behind them heading to the sandbar when we saw a huge splash. Once the water settled, the boat was still turning in slow circles because one motor was still idling. The boat never rolled just did a 360 at 80 mph. All three people were thrown from the boat. We were lucky and all managed to escape with minor injuries. Insurance totalled the boat and they got a new one the following year. Since then though, that boat was bought, rebuilt and had the same issue at least 2 more times!! Currently it's for sale again on Craigslist for $99,000. Who regulates this stuff?? Someone will probably buy that boat being clueless to the history.

Thanks for signing up. :thumbsup

If you read this whole thread, youll see there are just a couple of people going off the deep end. Most of us care deeply when someone in the boating community is hurt or injured, cause we know it could happen to us anytime.

Anything about your friend or the accident, you might wanna share with the rest of us? Thanks for taking the time.

So sorry for your loss. :(

Missing boaters were located this morning. May they rest in peace. Wounds from this tragic event will be with friends and family for life. Hopefully each day is better than the previous one.

If the drive breaks or even locks the prop up the boat is usually going to slow down pretty straight. I've lost a drive and/or been boating with others who have and nothing strange happened. If the gimbal breaks and allows the drive to turn is where you have a problem. Quad ram steering with a tie bar would help tremendously.

Anyhow not trying to derail the thread, just giving my personal experience.

I'm extremely saddened by the accident and will keep the families in my thoughts.

Everyone on this site, including myself, is sorry for the loss of life..
Life, Living and everything else, including Boating has its risks..
I've lost friends to plane, auto crashes, cancer, etc.
We all need to personally recognize and minimize the risks, however, we don't need more legislation to tell us how to live our lives.
$it happens, again, I offer my thoughts and prayers to all that are affected,
may all RIP

Well I am thankful the missing folks were found and that their friends and family can bury them and grieve as they should.
Life is so short, such an incredible gift, and it can end so quickly and without warning that we can all benefit from living it, every day of every minute...conscious of our frailty, and the love we have for those who mean the most to us.
May God grant the victims peace, and bring comfort to those grieving.

RIP Sorry to hear about this. Nobody knows if they had Life Jackets on or not or if Lanyard was on. You never know when something could break, It is my biggest worry when I drive my boat fast. When driving fast Boats always wear a Lifeline and Lanyard regardless of whether your going cruising or racing. Don't leave the dock without them, and where the lanyard everytime out. It is like wearing a seat belt. These boats are so fast that you can be over a 100 before you know it. You never know when you might decide to push for a few seconds when you only planned on cruising. Really not many people regardless of thier wealth step up and buy a boat like that without some prior experience. Prayers to thier family and friends.
