Wow that's crazy. I remember going to Powell as a kid when the dam was overflowing. Hopefully things start going the other direction soon

Pray fo snow in the upper Colorado watershed or it's going to be a crazy trip through the may tag straights this summer.

Something tells me it has nothing to do with snow levels and everything to do with this how those who manage the water want it.

Havasu doesn’t fluctuate but a few inches at most 🤔

Havasu doesn’t fluctuate but a few inches at most Although l agree 99% Havasu and Mohave don't/won't fluctuate more than 3-4' They are not storage reservoirs, more of slow down of the Colorado to better manage the distribution of the water. "They" dropped lake mead like never before, last year. Regardless of what "government" data someone might post. edit to say something is screwy with my phone. It won't let me quote

thats my thoughts as well. It certainly feels that way.

At the end of the day this appears like mismanagement

Been a dry and mild late Jan/Feb so far. More snow has fallen on the front range than in the mountains. If it weren't for the huge storms in late Dec/Jan, we'd be in bigger trouble. March and April are our snowiest months, hope we get a lot of catch-up........

It's no secret they are letting Powell drop and keeping Mead as full as possible, I'm not sure on the complete plan and reasoning, but it's on purpose. 5 states just signed an agreement to reduce their entitlements, to save approximately 500,000 acre feet in the next two years, this will raise Mead by approximately 16'. The snow pack will impact this plan depending on the snowfall. As far as Havasu and Mohave they are not considered reservoirs and have little impact on the big picture, but must be kept within a certain range because of the outlets.

Havasu can't fluctuate much, it's not a storage reservoir, it's a delivery/pumping reservoir.

Mead and Powell "Store" the water, When a water delivery is requested by a water rights owner it starts it journey at either Mead or Powell and works it way down through all the systems till it reaches them.

'X' Acre feet are released from Mead, then after a known time period based on that release they will release from Davis into the river at Laughlin, then that works it's way down to Havasu, if it's going to Phoenix or Upper So-Cal it is then pumped by one of the pumping stations (CA or AZ side depending), if it is going further down river it will be released by Parker Dam, Headgate dam etc. This is basically happening continuously as water deliveries are requested.

i wondered why they spent so much money on a new ramp that still is in the dirt at Hemmingway. figured they were going to keep the water higher this year.
I've wondered the same thing, maybe they figure it will come up to those new ramps with the spring run off.

Lake Havasu is only about 30 square miles of surface area and doesn't even make the top 100 of the largest lakes. Powell normally is about #24 in the country in terms of size. Even if Powell loses 1/2 its surface area it will only drop to about #50. As long as I can still get on the water it will be better than anything else west of of Kansas...

Sure you want to take your WIFE's jeep?? :)

I am too embarrassed to admit to owning one, so I deflect and blame it on my wife... I am not on a mission to get to LR, just a destination to make an excuse to go out wheeling for the day. I might walk over to LR if its possible if the lake bed is not jeep friendly.

this is a cool photo, sad tho!!!

last year, our trip was threatened by not being able to retrieve at antelope point valet ramp (july).

this year, we booked a couple trips and fear we will be forced to backtrack to launch near wahweap now. I think current conditions have already closed the valet ramp.

Isn’t mead dropping as well though?

I thought that Powell was a better storage lake due to its depth vs surface area. Less evaporation than Mead. Why would they not put the water savings into Powell?

I had a suzuki samuari on 33s that was a floating mud machine.... I used to pull 1 tons out of the Laguna Salada in Baja all the time after the rains. A road out to Lone Rock will eventually get packed down would be my guess. Eventually every truck that gets stuck donates another 50 feet or so and as long as each donkey continues to use that path it will press out all the moisture!

We have been going since 87 i think seen it at its highest and at its lowest. We always camped at lone rock as well use to go way to the west of it and had a loop for water sking.Unfortunately i dont see it coming to full ever again maybe to about 70 feet down at best.

As of now dangling rope is being taken down and theres no real answer as to getting fuel midlake anymore.I will still make a trip there and hope the corwds are way down seen it explode in crowds the last 15 years finding smooth water has been a rare sight.Im just lucky my lil 350 can go a long ways on 36 gallons so might really enjoy an uplake trip like the late 90s again.

So we used to go back in the 90's up until 2003 or so to Lone Rock...loved it there! I have always wanted to go back. Obviously a lot has changed and I have been watching the water levels online hoping they would come up.

As for camping...what has it been like getting a motorhome down to the water like in the old days? Anyone have any pictures of the campsites at Lone Rock and feedback on the sand, terrain, etc.?

Thanks in advance!

Went in august no problem getting motorhome to beach. Thing that sucked half of lonerock was a cliff. And good part was packed when I got there. I was in truck first if fam to get there to get spot but like going back to late 80s there’s always a way to get to the water without getting stuck.

This year skipping the camp at lonerock showing up boat loaded with camp gear launch and go. Sat radio a tent and a cooler find me a nice beach drop a line catch fresh dinner.

What a shame. If that is all truly from mismanaged water shed I don't have much hope for the future of Powell. I have always wanted to do a 2 week houseboat trip (bucket list shit) but based on recent actions looks like it may go to the grave with me. Bummer.
