All you guys taking about Powell has got me planning a houseboat next summer...this will be our first trip to Powell.

First things first which marina and any commendations on a house boat - considering boats in the 60 foot range.

Will be traveling from Lake Havasu.

GO!

IMO you should rent from the Antelope Point location. Why, because it puts you further up lake for more choices of breathtaking spots to tie off the houseboat for the week. You can also check out lakepowelladventurehouse on FB and IG. If you go through them, please tell them Bo referred you for your RDP discount.

Cheers,

Bo

Antelope. We rented a wahweap one. Shit tank had a crack allowing shit smell into the inside and the fridge only runs when the generator is on. We thought it would switch over to propane. So on the 2nd day the boat smelt like shit and had spoiled food. We've rented Antelope a few times and no problems.

I have down Wahweap 3 times. The prices are more at Antelope being part of the reservation. I didnt get the feeling they wanted our business. Rude as well.

Both of the marinas are on Reservation land, and owned by the Navajo tribe!

No. Wahweap is within a federal park and rentals are managed by Aramark. Worked the Wahweap docks during the summers in college.

You definitely have to know which boats to rent from wahweap. Some are brand new and really nice. Others are totally pieces of shit.

Here is the list of good boats to rent from wahweap.
These all have water cooled exhaust generators below deck, all have ac systems that use a heat pump conventional house style which is really important when it’s 110 outside.

46’ expedition
48’ navigator
59’ wanderer
62’ journey
65’ axiom
75’ excursion
75’ odyssey

The rest are pieces of shit and don’t let the pricing confuse you. They charge just as much for the shit piles as the nice ones. They only price it according to the number beds.

With that said the antelope marina has mostly newer boats and better service, and the prices reflect that. There are no 50% off deals like Wahweap has for prepayment trips.

I was checking out the wanderer out of Wahweap and then all the 60ft (silver, gold, titanium) out of Antelope...

I am reading. I so want to do this. I will jus rent a house boat and then invite people to come. Nobody wants to commit. But if the house boat is already rented , maybe they will then commit [emoji106] [emoji202]

Also if you pay in full very early there’s are usually 50 percent off specials. I get an email each year around December about them. Central air is key, also an inverter. I’ve rented from both, either way your going to spend your first day driving to a spot. Moving the house boat is a pita, digging anchor holes for 4 or 6 anchors is a lot of work, set up camp once and don’t move. Take your other boat on the explorations.

We're on the Wanderer at the end of August. Can't wait.
6 Adults and 3 kids should leave plenty of room. Actually, I think we have an extra room. lol.

We rented out of Antelope a couple of summers back and had a great experience. We rented the 70' Silver and it was perfect for our large group. As was mentioned before, do not pass a gas station without filling up and you need a good map with the mile markers.

We did a 48 Navigator out of Wahweep. One of the smaller luxury class boats. Plenty of room, nice amenities. Was $4600 for 7 days, on a pre-pay for mid june trip. Boat was nice, fuel gauges were way inaccurate and the fuel burn rate they tell you is way too aggressive. We were stressed that we were gonna run out of gas while beached and using the generator, so we suffered without AC most of every night, which sucks. On the way back, turns out we had a shit ton of fuel.
Morale of the story - Day 1, take the house boat from Wahweep to Dangling Rope and gas up full. Then go park it where you want in the bitchin part of the lake, use the generator without worry, and when it's time to go home in 7 days you have enough gas to make it back, without hitting Dangling rope, which MAY be out of the way depending on where you ended up parking.

One of the boats in our group came with a chest freezer on the bow - that was AMAZING, pack it full of ice and you don't have to take a boat ride to dangling rope every other day for ice. Wish we had one, but we only had a big ice chest on the bow.

They told us the same thing once about the generator. We suffered through a couple of hot nights and ran it the rest of the 5 days. Got back with PLENTY of fuel to spare. Run the generator on these like a rented mule. Turn it on and never turn it off through out the trip

Can you let me know how to get on this email list? 50% off would be a much easier sell to the family, I've been trying to pitch this Powell houseboat idea for a couple years now and everyone complains about the expense.

We had the Wanderer for the first time last October. We've also had the Discovery XL and Navigator several times. The Wanderer was new last year and was by far the best one we've had yet. The total cost prepaid at 50% off was about 3300 (not including fuel). I'm planning on doing this one again for our next trip in a year.

How many people are going on the boat? Don't get a boat too big if not needed.

I would recommend Antelope point, not so much that it's closer to uplake stuff, but the people there LOAD your gear on the boat for you. They had us loaded and unloaded so fast my head was spinning. Very fast process. They also pilot the houseboat out of and into the marina. Saves you a headache for a first timer.

Fuel burn: The numbers they gave us were way off. I mean way off. They must plan on idiots jamming the sticks WOT for 8 hours straight. They were telling me to anticipate 8-10 gph per motor for a 56' houseboat with two Evinrude E-tec 115 hp motors. It was about half that or less cruising at 6.8-7.2 mph sweet spot (2600-3000 rpm, but not more!) Left a location about 4 miles east of Dangling Rope with full tanks and cruised to Antelope point at the above mentioned speed. Took 17 gallons to top off. That's barely 2 gph per motor. IF you jam the sticks WOT you will top out at 8.0-8.3 mph MAYBE but burn at least 4 times the fuel.

Generator was the same thing. We had a Westerbake 5600kW. Basically a 4 cylinder Mitsubishi motor. They said about 2 gallons per hour. I was half that full load AC and everything. Took on about 8 -12 gallons of fuel for a 12 hour run time. If you run the generator while cruising you must keep your speed down or else the generator coolant intake can suck air and overheat. They tell you not to run the genny while underway. I found it safe to 3-4 mph, but didn't test the envelope any further.

Generator only draws out of one tank on our unit! We had 275 gallons of fuel at our disposal though. I put more fuel in our 21' open bow than the house boat.

We paid for early boarding at Antelope Pt. Pay extra to board and load late in the day prior to departure. Let's you get all settled in and sleep on the boat over night at the dock. You can get your brief EARLY the next day and be off first thing. They also made sure were were topped off with fuel and water AND redumped the holding tanks when we left.

I can't emphasize enough how important it is to have a GOOD cooler. They had a 115 qt ESKY cooler on the bow. This was the BEST cooler I've ever used. It is a subdivision of Coleman and is currently being rebranded as a Coleman. It sat in the sun for an entire week and had a BUTT LOAD of ice left over. We were buying ice like it was our chitty $40 cooler and it was completely unnecessary with this unit. Put all your drinks in there.

Which houseboat did you rent out of Antelope Marina? Were you happy with the boat you rented or would you suggest another boat in their lineup?

We just got back from a 6 day trip on two houseboats out of State Line (Wahweap). It was a great trip with no real complaints. We've done one trip out of Antelope and several out of Wahweap over the years. Antelope is more expensive and they typically don't offer discounts. The parking at Antelope is a pain since it's way up on top of the the hill and parking is right at the marina at State Line. The porters at both marinas will help you load your gear with motorized carts. Early boarding can be worth it but request it as soon as you make the reservation since they limit how many can pre-board each day.

Fun fact about the 48' navigator - it is the slowest houseboat out of all of them. 48' boat, powered by twin 60hp mercs. Most other boats that size or larger have 115hp mercs. Our boat ran 5mph at best, WOT. This was towing my 28' boat and a ski though. Didnt seem to go much faster when not towing. The other 4 houseboats in our group would leave us in the dust

If you are going to pay for everything that is a good idea.
We tried it with my wife’s family. Wife and I would rent boat, asked In-Laws to cover food, and SIL and BIL to cover gas for rental and my boat.

Guess who would not commit. Ended up cancelling, since my FIL and I talked and said we are not paying 100% without his others kids helping. BIL and SIL was pissed and I told them both no more FREE vacations on me and your dad.

the last time I did it out of Wahweap we booked a year in advance and got 50% off. Great deal. There was only 5 of us and we got the smallest houseboat and it was great.

I look at this way. I will pay for house boat , you come with your boat, pay for food and drinks. Seems simple.
I will have my boat too... I think it is more of how busy people are with kids etc .....
Where I don't seem to have that problem and am more time to do this.

You can go through the "cut"......straight across from Wahweap. That way you avoid the narrows and the maytag effect.

Thanks Gramps!

Is the “cut” wide enough and deep enough for the houseboat? Is it closer to the main body of water from Wahweap with the “cut” or from Antelope?

Yes, the cut has been dredged and is wide enough for 2 way traffic. It's wide enough for them to keep the big tour boats going through as long as it's deep enough. It was 23' deep when we went through last week. Wahweap and Antelope are about the same distance from the main channel up lake when the cut is open.

This is the cut on 7-7-2018, it is wide enough for a houseboat.

We had the smallest one, the 50' "Forever" model. I think it's actually 59' long. We had 4 people. Perfect size for that group. It sleeps 6 or more but I would not want more than 6, but I'm picky. I was pretty happy with the boat. Biggest gripe was not all the windows had screens and the midge flys or whatever the F they are were out in full force. Had to do some strategic curtain and window control.

Generator was great, AC worked good. Hauled the interior temp down from 90-95 to 75. [GALLERY=]

It is true the parking lot is a haul from the docks but the crew there gets all your gear then chases you back to your parked truck to take you down. We literally couldn't keep up with how fast they wanted to get us loaded. I was prepared for something much longer. The supplied cooler was 155 quarts not 115 like I stated earlier.

Make sure you put funnels or something around the anchor ropes from the beach so mice dont come running onto the boat, unless you dont mind the women becoming hysterical in the middle of the night.
